Google’s Chromecast now supports Hulu Plus app streaming (video)

    Image

Launching in July with Netflix and YouTube mirroring, Google’s $35 Chromecast streaming dongle now has another video streaming service adding supporting the platform to its apps: Hulu. From today, Hulu will provide Chromecast streaming inside its Hulu Plus app, mirroring shows like New Girl and Modern Family on the big screen. Unlike Netflix, which allows subscribers to stream video from Chrome and its official apps, Hulu originally supported Chromecast via its tab casting feature. Today’s extenstion will see a Cast button added to Hulu’s iPad and Android apps (with iPhone support “coming very soon”). While we’re still waiting for Google to open Chromecast to allow local media playback, the addition of Hulu Plus may tide us over until it does.

Hulu And Lionsgate Team Up To Produce A New Original Series

Hulu And Lionsgate Team Up To Produce A New Original Series

Over the last couple of years we’ve gradually seen the competition for original Web streaming content grow. Netflix and its creations are a prime example, it backed House of Cards which turned out to be a major hit, bagging 14 Emmy nominations. Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is doing well too. Amazon is also creating original content, it recently released a handful of pilots and allowed users to vote which of them they would want to be turned into a series. Hulu, another online video streaming service, announced today that it has teamed up Lionsgate Television to produce a new 10 episode series called Deadbeat.

Lionsgate Television is the studio behind hits such as Nurse Jackie and Mad Men, it plans to distribute the series internationally once it releases. The series is a comedy about a medium who helps ghosts in New York, it is scheduled for Hulu’s 2014 lineup. Deadbeat has been created by Cody Heller and Brett Konner of The Inbetweeners fame. The director’s chair will be occupied by Troy Miller, known for his work on Flight of the Conchords and Arrested Development, which Netflix picked up for a fourth season. Deadbeat is expected to go in production this fall, it will become available on Hulu and Hulu Plus in the U.S. next year.

Chromecast getting Hulu, HBO Go support in near future

Netflix and YouTube might be the only third-party services compatible with the Chromecast right now, but HBO and Hulu are the first companies since the device’s release to reveal that they’re working on their own Chromecast apps. Users can stream HBO Go and Hulu content from their Chrome browser to the Chromecast, but official support […]

Hulu no longer for sale as Disney, Fox, NBC maintain ownership

After a long-winded period of being up for sale with a few nibbles from big companies, Hulu has decided to exit the market and have its current share of owners maintain ownership once again. Instead, Disney, 21st Century Fox, and NBC Universal will invest $750 million in Hulu to keep it growing into the future.

    Hulu1-580x326

For the past couple of months, it’s been rumored that several big companies were interested in buying Hulu, including Yahoo, DirecTV, and even private equity firms like KKR and Silver Lake. However, it seems these companies couldn’t come to a successful negotiation, and after what we can only suspect to be numerous failed negotiations, Hulu’s been taken off the market.

21st Century Fox President and COO Chase Carey said that Hulu’s owners had “meaningful conversations with a number of potential partners and buyers,” and he called He called the offers that Hulu received “impressive,” but it seems that ultimately there wasn’t a consensus as far as agreeing to a final price for the streaming video service.

However, Disney, Fox and NBC most likely found a future value with Hulu, and they might have realized that selling the service wouldn’t be the best option. Hulu certainly has a lot of potential, and we reckon that if another company did acquire Hulu, it might have spelled bad news for consumers as the new owners would clean house and completely change around the service.

As for what the extra $750 million will serve for Hulu, it’s just said that the money will help “to propel future growth.” So it’s a good bet that we’ll see even more content from Hulu in the future, and we’ll see the owners continue to work at growing Hulu’s user base. Now, if they could just get rid of ads for paying subscribers, then we have a deal.

Search functionality has been enhanced in this latest update, this interface simplified once again to add to the overall easier top-to-bottom refurbishing of the user interface. Search now shows results directly beneath the search where before they were – again – not part of as smooth an experience.

This update comes right on the tail of an announcement by Fanivision of a device by the name of Fan TV. This machine will quite likely be featuring Hulu Plus by the time it is released in the future – release date remains unknown at the moment.

The Hulu Plus living room experience update is on its way first to Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, inclusive of 2012 and 2013 models of Samsung Smart TVs and a select number of Blu-ray players from their recent collection. Roku will also be seeing this update starting today, while the Nintendo Wii will have to wait – soon, and very soon!
