Google’s Chromecast now supports Hulu Plus app streaming (video)

Image

Launching in July with Netflix and YouTube mirroring, Google’s $35 Chromecast streaming dongle now has another video streaming service adding supporting the platform to its apps: Hulu. From today, Hulu will provide Chromecast streaming inside its Hulu Plus app, mirroring shows like New Girl and Modern Family on the big screen. Unlike Netflix, which allows subscribers to stream video from Chrome and its official apps, Hulu originally supported Chromecast via its tab casting feature. Today’s extenstion will see a Cast button added to Hulu’s iPad and Android apps (with iPhone support “coming very soon”). While we’re still waiting for Google to open Chromecast to allow local media playback, the addition of Hulu Plus may tide us over until it does.

Amazon Prime is the first subscription video service with an offline option, on Kindle HDX

Amazon Prime is the first subscription video service with an offline option, on Kindle HDX

As a part of delivering its newest lineup of Kindle Fire HDX tablets with Fire OS 3.0, Amazon also added a new feature to its Prime Instant Video subscription plan that Netflix, Hulu and the rest don’t have: downloads. The company told AllThingsD that this ability applies to “tens of thousands” of items from NBC, Viacom, Sony, Warner Bros. and CBS, with downloads ready for up to 30 days, and viewable for up to 48 hours after users start watching. Amazon hasn’t announced any plans to bring the feature to its older slates or other platforms, nor has it shared other details about how it works. We’ll have to wait and see if the competition negotiates / implements similar features soon — that we can’t even watch some OITNB or House of Cards stored on a tablet during a plane ride without going to some third party tech like PlayOn seems absolutely silly.

Update: As a point of clarification, Amazon’s product description reveals that offline playback for Amazon Prime videos is also possible on the newly released Kindle Fire HD. [Thanks, Quinn]

DNP Hulu offers a handful of fall premieres online before they air

It’s pumpkin spice latte season, and that can only mean one thing: fall TV premieres are right around the corner. Thankfully, Hulu (like several other providers, if you have cable or satellite just take a look at your video on-demand menu) is once again letting you get the jump on your water cooler gossip by offering an early look at a few new and returning shows from ABC, NBC and Fox in advance of their television air dates. So, if you’ve been suffering from severe withdrawal from The Mindy Project (now with 100% more James Franco) or been intrigued by the overripe nostalgia of The Goldbergs, you’re in luck. Also available on Hulu right now are new episodes of Back in the Game, Trophy Wife, Ironside and Welcome to the Family. To get into the spirit of premiere season, follow the source link below.

Hulu And Lionsgate Team Up To Produce A New Original Series

Hulu And Lionsgate Team Up To Produce A New Original Series

Over the last couple of years we’ve gradually seen the competition for original Web streaming content grow. Netflix and its creations are a prime example, it backed House of Cards which turned out to be a major hit, bagging 14 Emmy nominations. Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is doing well too. Amazon is also creating original content, it recently released a handful of pilots and allowed users to vote which of them they would want to be turned into a series. Hulu, another online video streaming service, announced today that it has teamed up Lionsgate Television to produce a new 10 episode series called Deadbeat.

Lionsgate Television is the studio behind hits such as Nurse Jackie and Mad Men, it plans to distribute the series internationally once it releases. The series is a comedy about a medium who helps ghosts in New York, it is scheduled for Hulu’s 2014 lineup. Deadbeat has been created by Cody Heller and Brett Konner of The Inbetweeners fame. The director’s chair will be occupied by Troy Miller, known for his work on Flight of the Conchords and Arrested Development, which Netflix picked up for a fourth season. Deadbeat is expected to go in production this fall, it will become available on Hulu and Hulu Plus in the U.S. next year.
