Hulu Plus for Android update improves player UI, expands compatibility

The Hulu Plus app for Android has a new update, and the most noticeable change is that its player UI to closer match the one on its website and in iOS. It also brings features from those platforms like 10 second skip back and a preview thumbnail in the scrub bar. Hulu also claims it’s rebuilt “for optimized awesomeness” with reduced buffering, better playback, and more device compatibility. Finally, in a move that should make plugging in your HDMI-out a little easier, it supports remote control navigation from game controllers and “similar peripherals.” A picture of the new UI is above, check out the old version after the break or just hit the source link to try it out for yourself.

Hulu Plus comes to Windows Phone 8

Hulu is expanding its mobile offerings by releasing their Hulu Plus app on Windows Phone 8, which is available now for download. The app includes the same features that other Hulu Plus users have already been enjoying, including access to a larger back catalog, but Windows Phone 8 users will also be able to take advantage of Live Tiles in the app.

This is just one of the many apps that has been released for Windows Phone 8 over the past few months, with some of the bigger mobile apps still waiting for their turn for Windows Phone 8 support. Either way, Hulu subscribers who pay for the $8/month plan will be able to enjoy streaming on their WP8 devices now.

As for the layout of the app, Hulu went with the traditional Windows Phone 8 layout rather than their own concoction, and firing up the app will lead to the home screen where you can scroll through TV shows — very similar to other Windows Phone 8 apps, and the look should be reminiscent of the Hulu app on Windows 8.

Some of the more popular apps and games that have landed on Windows Phone 8 include Pandora, Spotify, Microsoft’s own Photosynth, Modern Combat 4, and Netflix, which arrived on Microsoft’s new platform last month. We can only assume this is Hulu’s answer to Netflix as a way to earn more subscribers by offering Windows Phone 8 support.

Hulu boasts massive growth in Q1: 1m subscribers added and 1b videos streamed

Hulu announced some specifics today on their streaming business during Q1 of this year. The company said that 1 million Hulu Plus subscribers came on board this quarter, surpassing 4 million subscribers total. The company also announced that during the three-month quarter, over 1 billion videos were streamed.

Hulu has seen its paid subscriber base exponentially grow since Q4 2010, when at the time it had around only 250,000 Hulu Plus subscribers. As for mobile viewing, Hulu says it’s “growing at a significant rate,” and they predict that it will account for around 15% of Hulu’s consumed videos this next year.

Another big step for Hulu is the announcement of two new original series, which the company hopes will allow them to compete more with Netflix and Amazon. Hulu announced Quick Draw and East Los High. Quick Draw is a comedy set in the western style in 1875, and the story revolves around a sheriff who wants to introduce the science of forensics to an unruly Kansas town.

As for East Los High, Hulu that it’s “not your typical high school,” but we have a slight feeling that it may be just that. The show follows around a group of teens as they explore romance and mystery. Sounds familiar, right? Release dates for the these two shows have not been announced yet, but we’ll see them premiere at some point this summer.

Hulu Paid subscriptions have doubled to four million in past year

Hulu’s future ownership may be in question, but the video streaming site is apparently doing fairly brisk business on the paid subscription front. During an advertiser event this morning, the site announced that it has managed to double its Hulu Plus accounts in the past year, up to four million. The site’s revenue also hit a record for the first quarter of the year, though Hulu’s not giving out any numbers. As with rivals Netflix and Amazon, the company’s making a big bet on original programming, with a number of exclusive series, including the animated The Awesomes and western Quick Draw.

Amazon Studios Starts Free Streaming Of 14 Original Series Pilots

Amazon Studios Starts Free Streaming Of 14 Original Series Pilots

Last month we heard that Amazon Studios was moving in to the production of original content, which would bring it at par with its rivals such as Netflix and Hulu. They have now started streaming all new 14 original series pilots. The way this works is that only those shows will become series whose pilots get enough votes by Amazon Prime members. The pilots are available now and are streaming for free, it is now up to Amazon Prime members to decide which shows the studio will keep on producing. The company has previously said that they believe adding original content will make Prime more enticing for its users, as well as those who’re thinking of being Amazon Prime members.

There are a total of 14 pilots, six for children and eight for adults. Alpha House, Betas, Browsers Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supanatural, Those Who Can’t and Zombieland are for adults. For children Annebots, Creative Galaxy, Positively Ozitively, Sara Sovles It, Teeny Tiny Dogs and Tumbleaf are available. As they say, voting is a huge responsibility. Former News Corp. president reportedly places $500 million bid for Hulu

It is no secret that Disney and News Corp. have been looking into selling video-streaming service Hulu, with sources having dropped information over the past weeks about what is happening behind the scenes. Word had it the two companies were, at one point, looking at buying out the other to take control of the service, and then sources said they were entertaining potential buyers. Now individuals who are said to be familiar with the happenings have stated that News Corps.’ former president has placed a bid.

Peter Chernin was one of the individuals responsible for the early days of Hulu, and now it seems, if the sources are correct, that he has returned with a bid for the service. Chernin left Hulu back in 2009 to start The Chernin Group, which has holdings in a number of companies, including the popular online music streaming service Pandora.

His bid is said to be approximately $500 million, but neither his people, Disney, or News Corp. would comment on the rumor. Word has it that Disney and News Corp. have reached out to multiple potential buyers, but the two sources who provided this information do not know if any other bids have been placed for Hulu. All of this comes as methods for monetizing the service and taking it in a solid direction have been pondered.

Per past sources, News Corp. was leaning towards a model for Hulu that involved subscriptions as the primary way of monetizing the service, using something like the currently-implemented Hulu Plus service. Disney had different ideas, however, leaning more towards an advertisement-based model that would depend on advertisements, something the service also utilizes. For a long while, the two companies were unsure of whether they would sell the service, but if the sources are correct, it would seem they are close to making a decision.

Reuters: Media exec Peter Chernin bid $500 million for Hulu

Since the sun came up today it must mean that Hulu is up for sale, again. The latest extension to the sale rumors for the video streaming site is one from Reuters citing anonymous sources that indicates Peter Chernin, a former News Corp exec and Hulu board member has submitted a $500 million bid. There’s no word on how big a stake he’d be interested in taking, but that’s significantly lower than the reported $1.9 – $4 billion bids received from Dish and Google when the site was up for sale back in 2011. Of cours,e any sale price may vary on whether or not the acquisition come content included, but either way, we’d expect a few more possibilites to pop up before something (or nothing, like last time) happens. Of course, Peter Chernin was one of the folks pushing for a shorter theater to home release window and more TV on the Xbox, both of which have come to fruition in one form or another — maybe he can make a deal happen.

Hulu’s board reportedly looking into selling the service

The news isn’t surprising to anyone who has been following the Hulu business saga, but word has it that Disney and News Corp. are reaching out to potential buyers to see what kind of interest there is out there for acquiring the company. The information comes from two sources who are said to be familiar with the matter, and follows soon after it was announced that Andy Forssell will be serving as acting CEO.

hulu

According to the sources, the company’s board still has not made a decision about whether the popular video streaming service will be sold, or if other steps will be taken instead. As we reported on March 1, Disney and News Corp., which own the majority of the company, can’t agree on how the service should be monetized. That information came from sources who likewise claimed the two were considering selling Hulu.

Reportedly, News Corp. is leaning towards using subscriptions as the primary way of funding the service, such as the already available Hulu Plus monthly subscription that costs $8 USD. This differs from how Disney thinks it should be run, however, with the latter company maintaining that Hulu should utilize an advertisement-based business mode, relying on ads, which are displayed on videos regardless of whether users have a monthly subscription.

Thus far, it is said that both the majority holders have approached Dick Clark Productions, Hollywood Reporter, and Guggenheim Partners LLC, and all of them are said to have shown interest in the possibility. Beyond that, nothing else is known, and nothing official has been stated. When asked, Hulu declined commenting on the rumor.

Hulu Could Have Possible Buyers

Hulu Could Have Possible BuyersI guess you can more or less say that these days, companies, especially the larger ones, tend to take the more efficient way out when it comes to innovation by purchasing companies that developed the technology prior. Just like how Yahoo picked up Summly, and Apple recently purchased the indoor navigation company known as WiFiSLAM, so too, could someone else line up with fat pockets to make an offer to Hulu that their executives cannot refuse.

This is as much as Hulu’s board revealed, that they were approached by potential buyers who have the intention (and certainly the monetary means, of course) to pick up the online video service. It is interesting to note that Hulu is just 5 years old, which seems to be an eternity in the world of Internet company standards. No formal offer has been received to date, as the discussions remained private, and we do not know just how many parties did Hulu come into contact with before. Just which studio do you think is best poised to take Hulu to greater heights if they were to acquire them?
