Ford to break its yearly hybrid sales record in the US, seven months early

Ford Fusion Energi hands-on

When Ford’s hybrid lineup has been rapidly expanding over the past year, it stands to reason that the company’s sales in the category would take off like an eco-friendly rocket. They have, and faster than you’d expect: the automaker now says it should break its yearly record for US hybrid sales sometime in May, with just under 6,000 cars standing between its current 2013 figures and an all-time high of 35,496 hybrids in 2010. The company has also more clearly established itself as number two, climbing from an estimated three percent of the US hybrid market share last April to 18 percent this year. While Toyota is still the clear frontrunner at 58 percent, Ford is ahead of its Detroit-based rivals — and when Prius sales are soft, the Japanese firm just might be nervous.

Aston Martin Hybrid Rapide S completes Nurburgring lap with much fanfare, zero emissions

Aston Martin Hybrid Rapide S completes Nurburgring lap with much fanfare, zero emissions

Next month, Aston Martin’s hydrogen-fueled Rapide S will attempt a new record at the 24 Hours Nurburgring race in Germany. The company’s opted to get a head start on headline grabbing, though, taking a prototype vehicle on a zero-emissions lap around the course, with CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez behind the wheel. The test has gone off without a hitch, and Aston Martin appears to be confident that the vehicle will survive the grueling 24-hour marathon, which is set to run from May 19th through the 20th. The four-door sports car, which is based on the Rapide S model that’s soon to make its way to consumers, will operate on a blend of hydrogen and gasoline with zero CO2 emissions. It’ll be the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in such an event, according to the manufacturer. The lengthy race is an impressive feat for any motorist, and we’re glad environmental concerns haven’t taken a backseat to friendly (and exhausting) competition — for this one entrant, at least.

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix starts shipping, Seton Hall University gets early units

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix starts shipping, Seton Hall University gets early units

Lenovo’s ThinkPad Helix has had one of the rockier roads to the US market, having been promised for February only to be delayed to April. Things are getting smoother, however, as the first units of the are rolling off the production line — and there are already customers waiting at Seton Hall University. Keeping up its recent practice of handing out gadgets to junior students, the school expects to test the dockable Windows 8 tablet within a few weeks, and then deliver about 2,000 units to newcomers starting in June. The turn toward a hybrid lets the university settle on one PC design for the fall rather than divide its attention between tablets and Ultrabooks, Seton Hall’s Drew Holden says. As for the general public? Lenovo hasn’t officially put the Helix on sale through its own store, but a handful of customers say they’ve already received theirs through other channels. In any event, keep a close watch on third-party stores if you’re willing to part with $1,499 for a ThinkPad convertible.

Study shows hybrids popular among financially-savvy consumers

Experian Automotive has published the results of a study on hybrid vehicles, which looked at both the primary consumers who purchase them, as well as overall sales data. What it found is that those who purchase hybrids are likely to be financially-savvy, having a higher credit score on average than other consumers who get a new car loan. In addition, the numbers show hybrid sales – though still low – are slowly rising.

The information on the average hybrid buyer was gleaned from financial data included on vehicle loans, which showed an average credit score of 790. Such a score is slightly higher than the average of 755 for consumers seeking a new car loan for any type of vehicle. The same data shows the average loan for a hybrid at $25,807 with a monthly payment of $461.

The study also looked at hybrid sales, which increased to 3.1-percent last year over 2011′s 2.2-percent, a rise of 40.9-percent. While the numbers look big, the tally of hybrids on the roads is still less than 2-percent. However, as the data shows, sales are slowly and steadily rising. In 2006, hybrids only accounted for 1.5-percent. Says Experian, more hybrids are bought than leased.

Experian’s Director of Automotive Credit: “Hybrid vehicle owners have long been perceived as environmentally conscience consumers. While they may have made the vehicle purchase due to caring for the environment, our research shows that hybrid owners are economically minded as well. Hybrid owners tend to have outstanding credit histories, which also has enabled them to obtain financing at lower rates than typical consumers.”

Inhon Tablet has fold-activated CPU boost

Inhon first attracted attention with its amazingly thin Blade 13 laptop, a 13-inch laptop that weighs in at less than 2-pounds and is only 0.39-inches thin. According to the folks at Engadget, following very closely on the laptop’s heels is the Inhon Tablet, which has an optional keyboard that immediately makes one think of the Surface. The tablet will be launched in Taiwan at an unspecified date.

Inhon Tablet

It’s a rather unique concept – when folded, the device looks and functions like your average everyday tablet running Windows 8. It is portable, and can be used with a stylus, for example. There are bound to be times, however, when you need to do something more hardware-intensive than a tablet can handle. Instead of switching to a laptop or desktop, the Inhon Tablet has a built in sort of Turboboost mode.

On the half of the tablet/laptop hybrid that doesn’t hold the screen, there’s said to be USB 3.0 and Mini DisplayPorts, as well as a cooling fan that is exposed when the device is opened up. As such, the increased cooling is used in conjunction with a TurboBoost of the processor (overclocking?) that gives users a big jump in processing power.

Because it can no longer be used as a tablet once it is unfolded, the Inhon Tablet can be used with an optional accessory that looks very similar to a Touch Cover, functioning as both a trackpad and a keyboard. When it hits shelves, the quasi-tablet will be priced between NT $29,999 and NT $39,999, which is roughly $1000 to $1300 USD.

Toyota and Lexus hybrids make up 70% of total hybrid sales in the US

Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus announced this week that combined the two automotive brands have sold nearly 2,000,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States. The specific number according to Toyota is 1,951,243 hybrid vehicles sold. Toyota also recently announced that it has sold 5 million hybrid vehicles globally.

TOYOTA MOTOR SALES LEXUS HYBRID

Toyota estimates that its global fleet of hybrid vehicles has resulted in a reduction of about 34,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Toyota also says that its fleet of hybrid vehicles have saved owners over 3,000,000,000 gallons of gasoline compared to traditional vehicles. Currently Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles make up 70% of the United States auto industry’s total hybrid sales numbers.

Hybrid models for Toyota and Lexus also account for 16% of both companies overall sales. Recent figures show that for the automotive industry as a whole hybrid sales are approximately 3% of the US car market. Currently Toyota and Lexus offer 19 hybrid models along with one plug-in hybrid in 80 countries and regions around the world.

In the United States, Toyota and Lexus offer 12 hybrid models. A few of those 12 hybrid models are actually manufactured in North America including the Camry Hybrid, Avalon Hybrid, and RX450h. Toyota currently plans to build a fourth hybrid model in North America, the Highlander Hybrid. Toyota intends to introduce 18 new hybrid automobiles between now and the end of 2015. The automaker also expects to increase its sales of hybrid vehicles to at least 1 million units per year during the same period.

Protean debuts production in-wheel electric motor

Protean Electric is a company that performs a lot of research and development in the in-wheel electric drive market. In-wheel electric motors are exactly what they sound like, small electric propulsion units that fit within the wheels of an automobile. Protean Electric has unveiled its production in-wheel motor at the 2013 Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress.

protean

The Protean technology is designed to be an integral part of the hybrid powertrain system and paired with a traditional internal combustion engine. However, the manufacturer says that the technology is also capable of providing enough power to be the only source of traction drive in a fully electric vehicle. The motors are designed to reside in the space behind the wheel and produce torque and power exactly where the driver and automobile need it.

Protean says that its new production motor provides a 25% increase in peak torque compared with previous generations of its technology. The new electric drive motors can generate 735 pound-foot of torque and 100 hp each. That is a huge amount of torque for each electric motor with such a small physical footprint designed to fit inside your typical wheel.

The motors also weighing only 68 pounds each and Protean says that the electric motors are able to improve fuel economy up to 30% in hybrid configurations depending on the battery size. The design of the electric motors allows of 85% of the available kinetic energy to be recovered during braking to recharge the battery. I would love to see an all wheel drive electric vehicle using these electric motors producing over 2800 pound-foot of torque.

Aston Martin unveils Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S race car

Aston Martin is looking to break some records next month, as the company has unveiled the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S race car, which is based off the production 4-door Rapide S. The race car will make its debut at the 41st annual ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nürburgring race next month, where it will become the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in an international event, as well as the first zero CO2 emissions car to complete a race pace lap at the Nürburgring 24-hour race.

The car features a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine that’s capable of running on hydrogen, gasoline, or a combination of the two. This is the same engine in the production Rapide S that will hit show floors in the next few weeks (without the hydrogen hybrid feature). Aston Martin is hoping that the race car will be able to run a full lap on zero emissions with only water emitted from the exhaust.

The Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S uses a hydrogen fuel rail, storage tanks, and a proprietary engine management system to make things work, and the four hydrogen holding tanks are made from high-strength carbon fiber, which allow the tanks to hold a total of 7.7 pounds of hydrogen at over 5,000 psi. Two of the tanks are located next to the driver and the other two are in the trunk of the car.

As for the car’s speed, the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S can reach 190 mph and accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just under five seconds, which is fairly impressive, especially since it won’t be burning as much gasoline as the other cars in the field. Of course, the car that burns the least fuel isn’t the one that wins the race, but it’s always great when cars don’t have to use as much fuel.

Toshiba Hybrid Tablet Spotted

Toshiba Hybrid Tablet SpottedThe good people over at Engadget have managed to snag a hands-on of the a hybrid device that was inspired by the Toshiba Satellite U925, which has been dubbed to be a Windows 8-based hybrid product. Since this particular device is obviously a hybrid device, it comes with a keyboard that can be detached from the touchscreen itself, and whenever you have no need for any kind of typing to be done, all you need to do is detach it, and the entire shebang will be transformed into a tablet – nifty, no?

It seems that Toshiba displayed this hybrid tablet at the Intel Developer Forum that happened this week, where some quarters have called it the Portege Z10 instead, which so happened to have passed through the FCC’s tests recently without missing a beat. The alleged Portege Z10 will also have a rather generous hinge that definitely comes in handy to ensure the screen remains in place whenever it is used as a notebook. Hardware specifications include a 10” display, a USB 3.0 port, a micro-HDMI socket in addition to a SD memory card slot for expansion purposes.
