Dropbox CEO Reveals Steve Jobs Wanted To Kill Off Their Service

Dropbox CEO Reveals Steve Jobs Wanted To Kill Off Their ServiceWe’re sure that there are plenty of users out there who use Dropbox, but for those who don’t, the service is a cloud storage service that lets you sync files and folders across multiple devices through its software that is available on a variety of platforms, including mobile. Of course there are a lot of new cloud storage services these days, such as Google Drive and Apple’s iCloud, but it seems that if Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, had his way, Dropbox might not be around.

According to Dropbox’s CEO, Drew Houston, in an interesting anecdote, he revealed that Steve Jobs had called him in for a meeting. It was unclear at first what Jobs wanted to do with Houston, but it was revealed that Jobs had told Houston he was unhappy at the fact that he couldn’t acquire Dropbox, and instead told him that if he could not have their company, he would be going after them with a competing product that would kill them off, and the result is iCloud. Safe to say iCloud did not manage to kill off Dropbox, which we’re sure many Dropbox users are thankful for, but what do you guys think? Would the Dropbox experience be very different had it been acquired by Apple?

iWork for iCloud update brings set of collaborative tweaks

In an effort to bring about a new wave of online any-machine working for those in the Apple universe, iWork for iCloud has been updated by the company with a list of new features this week. This update includes updates for the iCloud iterations of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, the whole lot of them still […]

iWork Mavericks apps reinstating ’09 features in 2014

The updated version of iWork was unveiled back in October. At the time Apple touted how iWork had been completely rewritten and that it was now 64-bit. Apple also mentioned that iWork has “never been faster.” But that being the case, it looks like that complete rewrite did not leave enough time to add every […]

Former MobileMe Users Now Being Shifted To Standard iCloud Storage

Former MobileMe Users Now Being Shifted To Standard iCloud Storage

Apple once had a service called MobileMe. It wasn’t exactly a hit, in fact, Apple shut it down. It then released iCloud which has a considerably large user base and is quite popular. MobileMe was shut down last year, those who had paid for the service were offered a complimentary 20GB iCloud upgrade. The upgrade wasn’t going to be offered for life. Apple today started emailing former MobileMe customers who had received the complimentary update, informing them that the update has expired and that they have now been shifted to the standard iCloud account, which offers 5GB of free storage.

This update was offered last year so as to make it easy for former MobileMe users to shift their data to iCloud. The cloud based storage service offers 5GB of free data to all customers. Those who want more can pay for more storage, 5GB is the minimum that is offered to all iCloud users. Apple notes that those who were using less than 5GB of the 20GB they had been given for one year remain unaffected by this change. iCloud Backup, iCloud Mail services and Documents in the Cloud has been frozen for those who were using more than 5GB. They’ll remain frozen until the customers either remove excess data to pay to upgrade their iCloud storage so that it can accommodate the extra data.

Apple TV 6.0 update returns, likely with bug fixes in tow

Apple TV 60 update returns with fixes in tow

Apple may have been too hasty in rolling out its Apple TV 6.0 update last week, but it’s been quick to make amends. The company has just re-released the upgrade with a new build number — and, presumably, fixes for the connectivity and reset issues from the initial rollout. Otherwise, the new firmware offers the same AirPlay from iCloud support, iTunes Music Store shopping and iTunes Radio streaming that we saw a few days ago. We haven’t heard of any hiccups with this latest revision, but let us know if you encounter anything serious.

Apple now lets Windows users sync iCloud bookmarks with Chrome and Firefox

    Image

While the release of iOS 7 was yesterday’s big news, Apple also dropped a number of other smaller, but no less important, software updates. Not content with allowing only Internet Explorer users import their iCloud bookmarks to Windows PCs, the company is now letting Chrome and Firefox join the party. The additional functionality comes by way of an update to Apple’s iCloud Control Panel for Windows, a small app designed to keep contacts, calendars and bookmarks up-to-date between iOS devices, Mac and PC. To make it possible, Apple — which isn’t known for dedicating resources to rival platforms — submitted two browser extensions to do the heavy lifting. Ironically, Mac users are excluded from the fun, putting Windows users in the enviable position of receiving a feature before anyone else.
