iCloud website gets iOS 7 makeover, fresh app interfaces

DNP iCloud for iOS7

To prepare for iOS 7 bursting out of the developer bubble into public release, Apple has clothed the iCloud website in raiment that reflects the new platform’s looks. Next time you log into the website, you’ll be greeted not only with redesigned icons, but also with fresh app interfaces — Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Reminders and Find my iPhone got complete makeovers. The iWork for iCloud beta apps still retain their old UIs, but hey, at least they’re still free to use. As a nice bonus, Apple has also added quick menu access, which you can see in the image below the cut, when you click on the name of an open app. Head to the website to get taste of the new platform before iOS 7 comes out today.

iCloud.com goes out of beta ahead of iOS 7 launch

As owners of iPhones, iPads, and iPods eagerly await the release of the new iOS 7, Apple prepares its cloud service for the onslaught of upgrading users as well as new users that will be purchasing the new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s later this week. Now Apple has finally lifted the curtains off iCloud.com, […]

iCloud Website Gets An iOS 7 Makeover

iCloud Website Gets An iOS 7 MakeoveriOS 7 is expected to see a release on the 18th of September and for those who use the iCloud website frequently, you might have realized that today the website is looking a little different from before. As pictured in the screenshot above, the new iCloud website has been redesigned to reflect the new iOS 7’s theme. The icons have been changed to match the icons on iOS 7, with the exception of the iWork for iCloud icons that still remain the same from before. Gone too are the skeumorphic designs and the website basically feels like a larger version of iOS 7 and even comes with an animated background that will also come preinstalled with iOS 7 devices.

Presumably the iWork for iCloud icons will get a makeover when the apps have been updated, but for now they are admittedly rather out of place compared to the flatter and more pastel-colored icons. What do you guys make of the new iCloud website? Did you prefer this design over the previous one?

Apple’s iWork, iMovie and iPhoto will now be available for free on new iOS devices

Apple's iWork, iMovie and iPhoto will now be available for free on new iOS devices

Today at Apple’s next-generation iPhone event, Tim Cook revealed on stage that the iWork suite of applications — Keynote, Pages and Numbers — will be available for free on all new iOS devices. That’s not it, however, as the Apple CEO also announced that iPhoto and iMovie will follow suit and be up for grabs at no cost. Apple only mentioned that this will apply to “new” devices and the 5th-gen iPod touch — we’re looking into which other iPhone and iPad models can also take advantage of the company’s now-free productivity apps, so stay tuned to this post as we’ll be updating it as soon we find out.

Update: As promised, we reached out to Apple and below you’ll find the official statement from the company.

Today we announced we’re making iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote available as a free download for all devices activated as of September 1 that are running iOS 7.

Though initially only available to developers, the iWork for iCloud beta is now open to the public. Apple’s iWork For iCloud Beta Now Available To All

Apples iWork For iCloud Beta Now Available To All

Just last week, Apple quietly updated iCloud.com to reflect the changes they’ll soon be making in iOS 7. The updated look within iCloud.com was only available to registered beta testers, but today, Apple has removed the velvet rope to allow anyone with an Apple ID to check out the new and improved iCloud.com. iWork for iCloud beta now open to anyone with an Apple ID

iWork for iCloud beta now open to anyone with an Apple ID

First it was available to developers, then a select few who received invitations, and now the beta of iWork for iCloud is available for all. Apple’s made no official announcement, but point your browser to icloud.com, punch in your Apple ID details, and there you have it: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Seeming as you normally have to pay for the iWork software suite, this could be a time-sensitive public beta that’ll be pulled once you’ve found all the bugs (this editor has full access without owning any of the iWork programs). So, you might as well have a go at being productive in the cloud before it’s too late.

Apple’s iCloud Service Experienced Downtime Today

Apple’s iCloud Service Experienced Downtime TodayWhile there are many advantages to storing your files on the cloud, one of the main drawbacks would be unreliability – as in, you can never quite tell just when Murphy is going to strike, and you are unable to access those stored files because the cloud service is down. Of course, the same can be said of stashing your files on a physical hard drive, as it could fail you at the most crucial of moments. Regardless, it is best to have the same file stored on both platforms – just in case. Apparently, Apple’s iCloud services were down earlier this morning, where it affected approximately 3 million iOS users – numbering around 1% of the total. Those who were affected by the downtime would have found it nigh impossible to retrieve images from the photostream, to back up applications and data, or even to access documents that have been stored away on the cloud.

Apart from that, sometime late last night Apple did take note that creating new Apple ID’s is not a possibility for everyone, and thankfully, that particular issue has been fixed since. I guess the downtime of a server happens to even the best of them once in a while, and in Apple’s case, it has already gone down several times. Of course, other players such as Microsoft and Google are not exempt either, having experienced their fair share of severe outages in the past, too.
