Lenovo IdeaPad A10 takes Android for another notebook spin

There’s a new Android-based notebook in town, and it goes by the name Lenovo IdeaPad A10. This device – while not appearing officially via the company itself quite yet – has made its debut on Amazon in Europe. Here we’ve got a look at a mid-range gallery of specifications for the machine as it heads […]

Lenovo’s Windows 8 PCs to bundle SweetLabs’ Start menu replacement, app store

Lenovo's Windows 8 devices to bundle SweetLabs' Start menu revival, app store

Software developers and PC vendors have frequently catered to reluctant Windows 8 buyers with Start menu replicas, and that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Lenovo has just reached a deal that will bundle SweetLabs’ Pokki suite with its Windows 8 PCs, including a Start menu replacement, an app store and a game arcade. The two companies haven’t said which particular systems will first ship with Pokki, although the deal starts with consumer-focused devices and will spread to include multiple PCs across the IdeaCentre, IdeaPad and ThinkPad lines. The SweetLabs agreement should cheer those who want the old Windows experience or an alternative software store. The bundle may prove bittersweet for Microsoft, however — it usually wants Windows PC buyers to embrace the future.

Lenovo refreshes its IdeaPad laptops with Haswell and touch, designs unchanged

Lenovo refreshes its consumer laptops with HaLenovo refreshes its IdeaPad laptops with Haswell and touch, designs unchangedswell and touch, designs unchanged

No, there’s no new Yoga. You’ll have to keep waiting on that. For now, Lenovo is undertaking a much more modest project: refreshing its existing notebooks with Haswell. First off, the current IdeaPad U310 Touch and U410 Touch are now the U330 and U430 Touch. Other than the difference in screen size (13 inches vs. 14), both will be configurable with up to Core i7 fourth-generation Core processors, along with optional SSDs and a max of 8GB of RAM. While the U330 will be offered with either 1,366 x 768 or 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, the U430 comes with a 1,600 x 900 screen (you can upgrade to 1080p there, too). Oh, and the 14-incher can be had with a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce 730M GPU. Both will be available in the third quarter, with the U330 priced at $799 and up and the U430 going for $899. Moving on, the Y410p is the new, 14-inch companion to the Y510, with up to a Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage and dual 2GB NVIDIA GeForce 750M GPUs arranged in an SLI configuration. Screen resolution is limited to either 1,366 x 768 or 1,600 x 900, however. That’s available now on Lenovo.com starting at $799.

Finishing up with the entry-level S series, we’ve got the 11.6-inch S210 Touch, the 14-inch S400 Touch and the 15.6-inch S500 Touch. One thing to keep in mind is that both of these have Ivy Bridge processors instead of Haswell, as it was an easy way for Lenovo to keep the cost down. Other than that, you’re looking at Core i3 or i5 processors, up to 8GB of RAM, touchscreens with 1,366 x 768 resolution and hopefully some decent battery life (the batteries are so big here they create a hump around the hinge area). Additionally, the S400 and S500 will have optional discrete graphics, with AMD in the S400 and NVIDIA in the S500. Look for those in Q3, with pricing as follows: $429 for the S220, $449 for the S400 and $579 for the S500. Anyhow, since the designs here haven’t changed, we didn’t give these laptops the full hands-on treatment, but we did include some spec summaries in the gallery below, if you’re partial to bulleted lists.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y510p high-perf laptop: Haswell Core i7, NVIDIA 750M, $989

 EDIT Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p

What’s Lenovo been hiding up its sleeve? Apparently, it’s the IdeaPad Y510p. The company has recently started selling the 15.6-inch multimedia laptop via New Egg and its website without prior announcement. A follow-up to the Y500, the Y510p is powered by Intel’s new Haswell Core i7 2.4GHz quad-core processor and is equipped with NVIDIA’s 750M GPU. Lenovo claims a 5-hour battery life, which doesn’t sound too implausible given what we recently squeezed out of MSI’s Core i7 gamer. There’s no official word on thickness, but readers at the Notebook Review forum reported that it has a slightly thinner profile. The company has also replaced its predecessor’s glossy screen with a full HD matte, anti-glare display. Prices for the IdeaPad Y510p start at $989 after applying an e-coupon, but if you’re willing to shell out more cash, you can double its 8GB RAM, add another graphics card, supplement its 1TB HDD with a 24GB SSD, and install a Blu-ray-slash-DVD-RW optical drive. If you’re looking for something smaller (yet more expensive), then check out Sony’s VAIO Pro 13.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 review

Fussy about boot times, carry-weight or weak battery life? Then you probably gave Lenovo’s IdeaPad U310 a wide berth. The thing is, aside from those flaws, it was otherwise a very solid Ultrabook for those whose wallets couldn’t stretch to a premium model. We want to know, did you buy one? If so, what did you think of it, and let’s imagine you were dreaming up a budget Ultrabook — what would you change?

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S coming next month, pre-orders now live

Lenovo‘s long-awaited IdeaPad Yoga 11S is finally about to make its store debut. The 11-inch convertible laptop, which was announced at CES 2013 back in January, now has a release date of June 23 and pre-orders are live starting today on Lenovo’s website, as well as at Best Buy. If you like the Yoga series, but want it in a more compact form factor, this is probably your best bet.

IMG_3396wtmk-w1024-580x435

The Yoga 11S essentially takes the small form factor of the Yoga 11 (which we reviewed), and blends it with the performance of the Yoga 13, offering faster hardware on the inside that makes it a bit speedier than the regular Yoga 11. And of course, it comes with the same 360-degree hinge action that lets you use the device as a tablet of sorts.

Lenovo’s website has the Yoga 11S packing a 1.4GHz Intel Core i3 processor with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state drive for $800, while Best Buy has a bit of a better deal with a 1.5GHz Core i5 chip on the inside at the same price. You probably won’t notice too much of a difference, but if you’re all about specs, it seems the Best Buy deal is the better grab.

IMG_3384wtmk-w1024

As for the display, the Yoga 11S has the same 11.6-inch HD IPS screen that the regular Yoga 11 has, along with 10-finger touch support. Best Buy will have the Yoga 11S available starting on June 23, while Lenovo’s website lists a ship date of “more than 4 weeks,” which will roughly get us to late June for possibly a tandem release with Best Buy.

We ended up getting our hands on with the Yoga 11S during CES 2013 back in January, and we also reviewed the regular Yoga 11. Indeed, there is a slight performance boost with the Yoga 11S, but the Yoga 11 is working with the nifty Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, which packs quite a punch for a convertible laptop like this.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 Touch hands-on

Lenovo is announcing its fair share of brand new products at CES 2013, but its also giving some of its older products a refresh so they’ll act as better Windows 8 machines. One such line of products getting a refresh is the Lenovo U series. This is essentially the same exact thing as older IdeaPad U310 models, but there’s one key feature being added with this latest release: touch.

IMG_3417wtmk-w1024

Lenovo has outfitted the IdeaPad U310 with a touch panel for navigating through windows 8′s start screen. If you’ve read nearly any Windows 8 post penned by me, you’ll probably know that I think Windows 8 is perfect for touchscreens, so bringing touch functionality to the IdeaPad U310 is a great move for Lenovo.

We’re talking 10-point touch to be specific, which is a feature we’ve seen on a number of Lenovo’s Windows 8 machines lately. The addition of touch is pretty much the only difference though, with Lenovo offering up to an Intel Core i7 in the IdeaPad U310 Touch. You’ll also have NVIDIA GeForce graphics, so despite the fact that the IdeaPad U310 is an ultrabook, you might be able to get some reasonable graphics power out of the machine.

Indeed, the U310 is definitely an ultrabook, as it’s quite slim when it’s closed and it’s really light. If the smaller form factor of the U310 isn’t quite your cup of tea, Lenovo will also be offering the U410 with a 14-inch screen. The new U Touch series will be shipping out in Q1 2013, and Lenovo says that the U310 will start at $799.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S Ultrabook Takes The Multimode Route

Ideapad Yoga 11 silver 03 640x521 Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S Ultrabook Takes The Multimode Route[CES 2013] The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S prides itself in being the first multimode mini Ultrabook that will be well equipped to handle all that you throw at it, thanks to powerful and yet low-power Intel Core i5 processors, 8GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, and Windows 8 as the operating system of choice. The frame of the Yoga 11S measures a svelte 0.68” thin, and just like its predecessor, you are able to work with the Yoga 11S in the form of a laptop, or choose to flip the display around to turn it into a great sized tablet. Lenovo ThinkPad Helix and IdeaPad Yoga 11S revealed to flip for Windows 8

The Lenovo notebook lineup is vast here at the start of 2013 at the Consumer Electronics Show, and what with the ThinkPad Helix offering a whole new way to work with a convertible PC, the Windows 8 era appears to be in full swing. With the ThinkPad Helix you’ve got not just a new tablet, not just a new Ultrabook, but a machine that acts as both with a third way to utilize the Windows 8 touch universe in a whole new way. Then there’s the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, an upgrade of the Yoga lineup from 2012, here bringing tiny lightning claps in a whole new set of colors, too, including Cotton Candy Pink.

ThinkPad Helix

With the ThinkPad Helix you’ll be working with a high performance Ultrabook with a detachable 11.6-inch tablet creating what Lenovo assures is “the thinnest full-function Intel 3rd generation Core tablet with vPro” on the market today. This machine weighs in at just 835 grams and works with “Stand Mode” unique to any sort of device in this class – in this case it means that you’ve got the device connected to its keyboard dock like normal, looking like a laptop, then you “Rip and Flip”. This means you detach the tablet from the base, turn it around, and attach it with the keyboard facing its back, standing it up like a pro, still able to use the ports along the keyboard dock’s sides.

This machine also has a five button clickpad – 20 percent more than any ThinkPad that’s come before it – as well as the brightest display in ThinkPad brand history. The ThinkPad Helix has a 1080p IPS display and works with optional 4G LTE connectivity, meaning your favorite mobile brands COULD be carrying it soon – we shall see! This unit also works with NFC – tap in! The ThinkPad Helix will be starting at $1,499 USD and will be available starting in late February 2013.

IdeaPad Yoga 11S

The IdeaPad Yoga 11S works with an 11.6-inch HD IPS display with 10-finger multi-touch capabilities as well as many abilities that’ve previously been available only on the larger Yoga 13. This machine has Motion Control abilities like a hand-swipe in front of its webcam to move through photos, videos, and documents. Using Lenovo Transition you can automatically open applications in full-screen mode when the device is in one of its three non-notebook modes.

These three modes outside the standard notebook mode are called tent, stand, or tablet – that’s flat with the touchscreen out, folded up like a tent with the touchscreen out, and backward with the touchscreen out as well. The IdeaPad Yoga 11S comes with the same exterior build (casing-wise) as the Yoga 13, but now pushing forth with fabulous new color combinations including Cotton Candy Pink, Silver Grey, and Clementine Orange. The IdeaPad Yoga 11S will be available starting at $799 USD beginning in June 2013.
