Sony Xperia V hands-on (video)

The slightly shier Xperia V was mentioned ever-so-briefly in Sony’s IFA presser — but that’s not to say there’s nothing to see. We’ve just got our hands on with the firm’s newest LTE handset, and it’s a lightweight 127 grams, comes with a 4.3-inch, 1,280 x 720 display and boasts iPx5/7 water resistance. It’s also packing Sony’s new ClearAudio+ technology. It’s got that familiar Xperia curve, which we like, plus a rough silver finish around the edge. Check out our hands-on video after the break, with more impressions coming soon.

Sony introduces the VAIO Duo 11 slide-out tablet to take on Microsoft Surface

Sony has just officially entered the Windows 8 tablet and touchscreen market with the announcement of the recently leaked VAIO 11-inch slide-out tablet. This will obviously be aimed at those folks that created the Surface tablet — and Sony hopes to spoil their plans with this new full featured and powerful Windows 8 machine.

It’s a tablet, and it’s a notebook. This thing does it all. Sony very briefly mentioned this new full-featured tablet at IFA 2012 and while we are digging for the skinny, check out the leak from earlier this week. The Duo 11 will come with many different options for CPU, and will be customizable to users needs and budget.

The new Duo 11 will come powered by Intel’s Core i7-3517U processor, and a few lower priced options will be available. Then they’ve managed 4GB or 8GB of RAM options complete with 128 or 256GB SSD’s for extremely impressive performance. The specifically mention the 11.6-inch display will be a full 1080p and look stunning — probably with the BRAVIA engine.

This convertible PC will have ultrabook power while remaining extremely portable, doubling as a tablet and more. The press photos reveal stylus support — which was expected — and we are hearing various accessories will be included at launch as well. Did we mention NFC, GPS, and 720p HD cameras both on the front and back of this tablet hybrid. Sony will be aiming for a late October release date but are pretty tight-lipped on pricing for now. We’ll update once they announce full details.

Sony HMZ-T2 Personal 3D viewer changes your perspective

The next generation in 3D visuals may well have just been revealed by Sony in a device called the HMZ-T2 Personal 3D viewer. This device has been almost secretly revealed at IFA 2012 with just a peep spoken by Sony – it bringing on a next-generation look and perhaps a bit more viable final product than last year’s model HMZ-T1. This device is ready to bring on a wearable 3D display for anyone willing to put the massive Geordi LaForge mask.

This device is a wearable device that won’t be gaining you the same cool points that Google’s Project Glass will, but you’ll certainly be paying a bit less in the end. Inside you’ve got a pair of 0.7-inch OLED monitors with 45 degree viewing angles. What you’ll be working with for audio is some next-level Virtualphone technology for virtual surround sound. That’s 360-degree 5.1 surround sound, for those of you hoping to get in full immersive mode.

The HMZ-T2 from Sony has a set of detachable and adjustable light shields for privacy when you’re in your own 3D world, and you’ll be able to clip them on or off whenever you like. You’ve got the ability to work with both 2D and 3D when you want, and the whole device is 20% lighter than last year’s offering.

You’ll be able to play games on your own or share with others what you’re seeing with a lovely dual-output switcher. You can have one person watching TV while another person plays games – we’re looking forward to seeing that happen, of course, as it seems pretty crazy indeed. This device will be working with a variety of systems for content and will be showing up on the market later this year!

Sony debuts NFC and Bluetoothenabled SRSBTM8 wireless speaker

Smartphones, tablets and headphones aren’t the only NFC-enabled devices that Sony announced at IFA today. While it didn’t make it on stage during the keynote, the company’s also officially announced a new wireless speaker that boasts NFC connectivity in addition to the usual Bluetooth — an addition that lets you play music simply by tapping the speaker with your smartphone. Sony VAIO Duo 11 Windows 8 tablet/laptop hybrid revealed

As expected with upcoming Windows 8 devices, Sony did not disappoint as they officially took the wraps off the VAIO Duo 11, a hybrid sort of device which is part tablet and part laptop. As you can see in the photo above, the Duo 11 can slide forwards, covering the keyboard entirely and double as a tablet. Alternatively the screen can be pushed back which allows it to function as a regular laptop, albeit one that has a capacitive touchscreen for a display. (more…)

Sony quietly drops new HMZT2 Personal 3D viewer at IFA

Sony almost sneaked this one by us at today’s IFA press event. In fact, it was never mentioned on stage and practically buried in the day’s flood of PR. The HMZ-T2 is the company’s next generation wearable 3D display. Aesthetically it doesn’t appear very different from last year’s T1 and, spec-wise, things seem largely the same as well. Put the head-mounted unit on and you’ll be presented with a pair of 0.7-inch OLED monitors that deliver 45 degrees of three-dimensional entertainment. There’s also the same Virtualphones tech baked in, that create the illusion of a 360-degree 5.1 surround sound system. The T2 distinguishes itself primarily through a refined design that makes it lighter and more comfortable (without resorting to shape-shifting liquid metal, either). For more, check out the PR below.

Sony Action Cam revealed to take on GoPro

This week at IFA 2012 we’ve gotten a glimpse at a brand new Sony-made camera made for high-energy recording – the Action Cam. This device works with a 16 megapixel sensor (Exmor R), wi-fi connectivity, and is popping up for an amazing $199. See if you can match that, competing action camera warriors!

This device brings on a regular version shipping in September or October for $199, then a $270 USD version comes with wi-fi capabilities. This device brings on wi-fi remote configuration as well as viewfinder – which you’ll want if you want to see what’s going on, as this device has no display otherwise. The camera also works – in both cases – with a 16-megapixel Exmor R sensor so you can grab low-light shots galore.

The camera also works with a fixed-zoom Carl Zeiss lens and some lovely 1080p video at 30 frames per second as well as a 720p option at 120 fps – that’s slow motion for sure! You can work with removable storage with this device’s microSD card slot, you’ve got a removable battery so you’ll never be low, and you’ve got the option to work with a display if you’re willing to shell out a few extra bucks. There’s a “Handycam Adapter” in the works that has a 2-7 inch display that works with a standard camcorder interface as well.

This device also has a set of accessories in the works including an adhesive mount pack, a bike mount, angle mount, head straps, suction cup, replacement housing for waterproof action, and more! Stay tuned as the Action Cam takes hold of our action-loving hearts in the very near future – and stick to our IFA 2012 portal as well to stay up to date on all things released in Berlin!

Sony’s 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X9005 hits the IFA show floor, we go eyes-on

As ever, Sony’s IFA press conference was a veritable storm of products, but CEO Kaz Hirai was clearly the most excited about the company’s new 84-inch 4K TV, the Bravia KD-84X9005, and after beholding the thing for a bit alongside a scrum of fellow tech journalists in Sony’s booth at IFA, it’s pretty clear why. The thing is beautiful — and yeah, we can confirm, as Kaz suggested, that you really do want to stick out your hand and touch the picture when you’re standing in front of it, particularly, when the video cycles through images of the ocean, with water droplets hitting the screen.

At 84 inches, this thing is a beast, with at least a dozen or so folks standing comfortably around it to catch a glimpse of the display. The Bravia is surprisingly thin for such a beast. There are speaker bars attached to either side of the display, with a control panel along the bottom. The stand consists of two metal bars holding up what’s surely a weighty set. Check out our eyes-on video after the break.
