Without any fanfare, Apple has released a set of updates to its popular iMac desktop PC line. The 2013/2014 iMac lineup has seen a boost in processing power, networking and storage speed.
Among today’s updates are speed increases to the Fusion drive and SSD storage options, which increase performance by up to 50 percent thanks to PCIe support. In addition, the systems now come with with faster CPUs, with the entry-level 21.5″ version coming with a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel i5, with a 2.9GHz version available. The 27″ version starts out with a 3.2GHz quad-core i5, with available 3.4GHz i5 and 3.5Ghz quad-core i7 upgraded models as well. The new iMac models now support 802.11ac Wi-Fi networking, which offers significantly improved throughput when connected to an 802.11ac router.
GPU performance has also been upgraded, with all but the base 21.5″ version offering NVIDIA GeForce 700 graphics chips with at least 1GB of video memory. The top-of-the-line iMac can be configured with a GeForce GTX 780M with up to 4GB of memory, but that adds $150 to the price.
Pricing for the 2013/2014 refreshed iMacs starts at $1299(USD) for the 21″ model, and $1799 for the 27″. A fully-outfitted 3.5GHz Core i7 27″ model with 16GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, and the GeForce GTX 780 M with 4GB memory works out to be $2749. All new iMac models all available for order from the Apple Store starting today.
Apple Updates iMac Processor, WiFi
Posted in: Today's ChiliApple announced today an update to its iMac computers, improving performance through faster processors, WiFi, graphics and storage options.
The 21.5 inch and 27 inch models of the iMac both will come equipped with Intel’s faster, Haswell fourth generation quad-core processors. They will also both support the 802.11ac WiFi standard (if you have an 802.11ac base station to connect to, of course) for data transfer speeds boasted as much as three times faster than the previous WiFi generation. Apple has also added in PCIe-based storage to both models to support faster Flash storage and Apple’s Fusion Drive configurations even quicker.
Apple is offering the entry level 21.5 inch model for $1,299 with a 2.7GHz quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive. The 27 inch model is listed starting at $1,799 and comes with the slightly larger 3.2GHz quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of memory and a 1TB hard drive.
Back in 2012, Apple unveiled their new iMac computers which featured a newer design that made the computer even thinner than before. Intel then announced their new processors which not only featured an improved integrated graphics card, but would be more energy efficient, and we’re sure there are some of you guys who have been holding back on getting the iMacs just to wait for the new Intel processors. Well the good news is that your wait is over as Apple has since announced refreshed iMa computers that will sport Intel’s latest fourth-generation quad-core processors, 802.11ac WiFi, and faster PCIe storage options.
For those who don’t need a monstrous 27” display, the basic 21.5” model will feature a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 quad-core processor, while there are higher-end options for the 21.5” and 27” models that will sport Core i5 processors clocked as fast as 3.4GHz and come with NVIDIA GeForce 700 graphics in case you needed a little extra graphics processing power. As it stands the basic 21.5” model will be priced starting at $1,299, but expect the prices to go up with better hardware. The iMac models are now available for purchase via Apple’s website.

Apple Updates iMac With New Intel Processors, Speedy 802.11ac Wi-Fi And Faster Flash Storage
Posted in: Today's ChiliApple has just released an updated version of its iMac all-in-one computer. The update is a minor one, unlike the considerable redesign it got at the end of last year, but it brings brand new improved performance and internal specs to the iMac line. New features include Intel quad core processors, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and faster PCIe-based flash storage.
These new iMacs now feature a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor on the base 21.5-inch model, which is the first desktop with Intel’s Crystalwell architecture, and new Iris Pro graphics. Iris Pro is a new Intel GPU that’s popular on mid-range gaming PCs, and should offer considerable improvements over the previous model. There are also CTO options up to 3.4GHz Core i5 Haswell processors, and NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics on the top model, with up to 4GB of dedicated memory.
802.11ac networking means the new iMacs can work with the latest AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule routers, which introduced that wireless standard earlier this year. PCIe-based flash storage should offer speed improvements of up to 50 percent over last-gen models, according to Apple, for faster booting, loading of apps and general system performance. All-flash CTO options now range up to a full 1 TB of storage, with Fusion Drives available in either 1TB or 3TB.
8GB of RAM and a 1TB drive are now standard, with 32GB max configuration options for custom orders. Apple starts selling the new iMac today on its website, and in stores as well, according to its press release. Customers can choose between stand-mounted versions, and ones with built-in VESA adapters if they’re mounting on their own swingarms or other hardware. Prices start at $1,299, and range up to $1,999 for base configurations.
The top-end 27-inch model offers up to 40 percent faster graphics, and combined with PCIe and the new Intel Haswell quad-core processors, that’s a might attractive package for anyone doing some gaming or heavy-duty video editing. Plus, it’s all wrapped up in the slimmer body design, which, as mentioned in my review of last year’s model, is a big improvement on the iMac’s aesthetics.
While you would be excused for thinking the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were Apple’s latest offerings, you’d be wrong. Today, Cupertino has announced that the iMac range has been updated to include new silicon (Haswell) new GPUs and improved WiFi. The entry-level 21.5-inch iMac houses a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with iris Pro graphics, while the top spec version (both sizes) comes with 3.4GHz and NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics, plus the option to upgrade to core i7 at 3.5 GHz. That WiFi refresh brings “next gen” 802.11ac, and there’s also support for PCIe-based flash storage meaning up to 3TB of Fusion drive, or 1TB SSD. The new models are available today, starting at $1,299 for the 21.5-inch, and $1,499 for the bigger display.

One of the great things about all-in-one desktop computers, like the iMac for example, would be how little desk space it takes up. However if you were to throw in peripherals such as external hard drives, it could take up more desk space than you’d like, which is why mLogic’s external hard drive solution could be for you especially if you own an iMac or Apple Display. The company has recently debuted a lineup of mBack Zero-Footprint external hard drives that have been designed for the iMac and Apple Display in mind.
The hard drives themselves have come in either a white or aluminum finish that should match your iMac or Apple Display, and best of all it will mount on the stand of your display, hiding it from view while not cluttering your desk at all. Given that the USB ports are on the back of the iMac, we reckon it makes a great fit. Available in 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB models, the hard drives will connect via USB 3.0 and is bus-powered. It will come with a built-in cable and is formatted for Mac computers meaning that it is Time Machine ready out of the box. It is priced at $100, $150, and $260 for the 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models respectively and can be purchased from mLogic’s website.

You know that soul dropping feeling you get when you see someone drop their phone? It’s the sound that’s the most horrifying thing. A crisp crack that’s not unlike adding ice to your soda. Painful. There goes hundreds of dollars! Now imagine that same feeling multiplied as you watch in horror as some stranger drops his iMac box and you hear the shrieking shatter. That would be awful. That would also make for a HILARIOUS prank.
GPU replacement program announced for 2011 iMacs, Apple to offer refunds for previous service
Posted in: Today's ChiliRemember the 2011 iMac’s HDD replacement program? It seems like the machine thought it was time for an encore. Apple recently announced that 27-inch iMacs sold between May 2011 and October 2012 may be eligible for a free repair, citing faulty AMD Radeon HD 6970M GPUs (you can find the official statement after the break). The issue specifically affects machines with 3.1GHz Core-i5 and 3.4GHz Core-i7 processors, and can cause visual distortions, white or blue vertical lines or a solid black display. According to 9to5Mac, Apple is also issuing refunds to customers who paid to have the GPU fixed before the program was announced. Fair enough if you’re on a budget, but we won’t blame you if you use the issue as an excuse to upgrade.
