ASUS And Toshiba Expected To Launch Intel Haswell Powered Chromebooks In 2014

Intel’s Haswell processors promise better performance and improved battery life, and results have been evident in all of the products that carry these processors. Acer and HP opted to use the Haswell processors in their Chromebooks which were unveiled earlier this year. If the latest from Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes is to be believed, both ASUS and Toshiba might go down the same road next year. Both manufacturers are expected to launch their own Intel Haswell powered Chromebooks in 2014.

According to sources cited in the report, prices of ASUS’s Chromebooks might range between $199 and $329. The first wave will include 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch models. A concrete release date is not known, but sources expect the release might happen in the first half of 2014. Toshiba too is rumored to unveil its Haswell Chromebooks next year, though the company is said to outsource production to Inventec. No expected price point or release time frame is available for Toshiba’s Chrome OS powered notebooks, it is not even known what display size the Japanese manufacturer is going to opt. At this point in time, shipment of Chromebooks account for under 5 percent of all notebook shipments, the addition of two new manufacturers and their products is likely to improve the figure.

Intel Reportedly Wants $500 Million For Its Internet TV Service

Intel Reportedly Wants $500 Million For Its Internet TV Service

It has been known for quite some time now that Intel has been working on an internet based TV service which would be powered through a set-top box that would be built by the company itself. However Intel’s TV service has failed to take off and recently it has been rumored multiple times that the chip maker is looking to offload the entire project. The latest from Bloomberg News suggests that Intel is asking $500 million for the service and it looks to wrap up the sale by the end of this year, which isn’t that far off.

The report says that Intel had created set-top boxes during the time it was working on its internet TV project and that it also developed mobile applications for smartphones and tablets through which subscribers would have been able to stream content. It goes without saying that Intel did put in substantial resources in this project, one that it now looks to get off its hands. Verizon has been rumored to be interested in the project, which is headed by the Intel Media division. The latest report once again hints at Verizon as a possible buyer, Big Red can use the division to expand its footing in the TV reach beyond FiOS. Verizon and Intel are said to be in talks, but no official confirmation has materialized as yet.

Intel’s next many-core chip will be a true stand-alone processor

    Intel's Knights Landing-based Xeon Phi

Intel’s current Xeon Phi doesn’t really fulfill the promise of many-core computing — it’s a co-processor that needs a ‘real’ CPU to function. That will change when the next-generation Knights Landing model arrives, Intel revealed at the Supercomputing Conference this week. The 14-nanometer chip will be available as a stand-alone model that can run all software, like a traditional processor; since it won’t have to shuttle data between two components, it should be faster, easier to program and cheaper, too. There will also be high-speed memory built into the chip, as well as a number of (unspecified) architectural tweaks. Knights Landing isn’t likely to ship until late 2014 or 2015, but it could be worth the wait for researchers, server operators and anyone else who wants massively parallel computing power.

Peripheral Vision 012: Dave Allen on moving from punk rock to digital advertising

    Peripheral Vision 012 Dave Allen

“I’m pretty well known as one of the co-founders of the British post-punk band, Gang of Four,” Dave Allen begins. “And then, after a while, I got the web itch.” It’s a study in contrasts, perhaps, from the bass player of one of the late-70s most seminal political punk bands, to a title like “director, interactive strategy,” but Allen is nothing if not eclectic. Over the decades, his passions have taken him from the angular post-punk of Gang of Four to the new wave of Shriekback, through stints with Intel and E-music. And now we’re here in 2013, inside North, a Portland brand agency that has imparted on him the aforementioned title.

To Allen, however, it’s not all that strange, the transition from punk rock to advertising. And at the very least, it adheres to tenets he’s held dear all along. “When Gang of Four signed to EMI and Warner Bros. back in the day,” he explains, “everyone was trying to say we sold out, but they kind of knew we didn’t. We wanted to get our message across to the most people, so where’s the best place to go? The big labels. They own distribution, manufacturing and marketing. They own the radio stations. For me, to work in the advertising world, whilst being critical of it – why would you do it outside the walls? Why not try to foment discussion within the very industry that we’re all working in?”
