Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann: consumers will soon expect every service on every platform, mobile included

Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann consumers will soon expect every service on every platform, mobile included

Ben Silbermann has found himself in a pretty swell spot. He’s the CEO of Pinterest — a company that was recently valued at $2.5 billion, despite not making a single cent to date. He took the stage today at D11 in Southern California, answering questions shot from Kara Swisher. One of the key points he made was on the topic of mobile. Swisher was asking about Pinterest’s mobile efforts, and Silbermann suggested that in the very near future, asking such a thing would be borderline silly. “It’d be like asking a business today if they’re a dot-com business,” he said, suggesting that every business created in 2013 should absolutely have some sort of presence on the web.

It’s perhaps due to the shocking uptake of Pinterest’s apps. Said Silbermann: “A growing number [of users] use Pinterest exclusively on their phone or tablet. When we released our mobile apps, we were taking bets on how long it’d take for those to surpass our web traffic. I figured it’d take a few weeks. It was literally the day it was released [that the traffic was passed]. I think it’s because phones and tablets are largely always around you, whereas you’re not always around a [traditional] computer.”

It’s perhaps the token example of how consumers at large are moving away from needing a full-fledged machine at their fingertips, and the redefining of what a “computer” is for the newest generations.

Google Calendar for Android adds color highlighting, date and time picker tweaks

Google Calendar for Android adds color highlighting, date and time picker tweaks

Admittedly, this one’s a bit of a snooze, but if you find yourself adding events through Google’s Calendar app on Android, you might give a hoot about these tweaks. First up is a new color tool, which lets you highlight specific appointments and change the color of your entire calendar. Judging by the screenshot above, there are two dozen hues up for grabs, so you’re bound to find one that’s to your liking. There’s also a new date and time picker — functionality hasn’t changed much, but it looks different now. More rounded and playful, you might say. There’s an analog clock, dials and all, for picking the time, and a fairly basic date listing for choosing the date. You can also select the correct time zone by typing in a city name — the app takes care of the rest. You’ll need Android 4.2.1 to take advantage, so if you haven’t yet pulled the trigger on that new handset purchase, you might want to set a date. Using the boring previous-gen Calendar app, of course.

VIZIO M-Series Razor LED Smart TVs line up to cover bulk of 2013

This week VIZIO has shown that they’re still very much in the business of making televisions with their M-Series Razor LED Smart TV line for 2013. These televisions come in sizes from 30 all the way up to 80 inches and feature technologies like Smart Dimming and VIZIO Internet Apps Plus for high quality picture both locally and via the web. These machines come with what VIZIO notes is an “ultra-thin bezel” for a “near-borderless” TV experience.

While VIZIO has over the past year shown its ability to spread into the world of personal computing and mobile devices, the M-Series here shows their original home to still be a welcome one. Each television in this series works with full HD 1080p picture with up to 240Hz effective refresh rate.

Each of these televisions work with Smooth Motion technology enhanced with backlight scanning, while models 50-inches or larger gain added abilities. Every model at 50-inches or larger works with a “flicker-free” 3D picture viewable with VIZIO’s implementation of Theater 3D technology.

The whole range works with VIZIO’s newest Internet Apps Plus Smart TV platform, this allowing the user access to apps like Facebook, Pandora, VUDU, YouTube, M-GO, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and Netflix. All of this will be accessible with each television’s built-in Wifi connectivity or ethernet to keep you up on the internet.

Each M-Series television works with a new backlit Smart remote made specifically for ease in nighttime viewing. These remotes will have Wifi connectivity and new Universal remote features later this summer (2013), allowing the user to control all home entertainment devices. Each of the following: 32, 40, and 47-inch models will be costing between $399.99 and $729.99 MSRP, while models at or above 50-inches will begin at $799.99 ranging up to $3,999.99 USD for 80-inches of Razor LED Smart TV with Theater 3D abilities.

And for those users who want a bit more punch for sound, VIZIO has also introduced the VIZIO S4251w 5.1 Sound Bar which we’ve also reviewed in full earlier this month. Stay tuned as VIZIO continues to keep it sharp.

Internet Trends report shows a surge in sharing, mobile overtaking PCs

Image

Mary Meeker’s Internet Report is often considered a technology bellwether, and it’s certainly living up to that reputation in the 2013 study. This year, the dominating trend is sharing: Meeker has noticed that many more of us are willing to publish our media and location data. People worldwide now share over 500 million photos a day through services like Facebook and Snapchat, while Dropcam, Soundcloud, YouTube and Waze are also growing quickly. Americans aren’t leading the trend, however. An estimated 15 percent of US internet users frequently share content online, while the world average is 24 percent.

Other findings? If it wasn’t evident before that mobile devices are taking over, it’s quite clear now. The Internet Report shows tablet shipments overtaking PCs at the end of 2012; meanwhile, mobile internet traffic is quickly surpassing the desktop in countries like China and South Korea. Many companies are leaning heavily on mobile for their income, too. The full Internet Trends report is available after the break for additional insights, although it’s currently bombarded by traffic — have some patience if it doesn’t load right away.

Google Maps adds images for three historic parts of New York City (video)

Google adds Street View images for historic parts of New York City

While Google has practically blanketed New York City with eye-level imagery, few would doubt that there’s still ground left to cover. The search giant is filling in some of those gaps with new Google Maps galleries for a trio of historic areas. A collaboration with Historypin lets the curious glimpse photos and videos of regions affected by Hurricane Sandy; those who want to visit the 9/11 Memorial, meanwhile, can see Street View panoramas of both the North and South pools. Google is also expanding its Street View coverage of Central Park to include its many legendary trails, not just the roadways. If you’ve been meaning to pay a virtual tribute to any of these three spots, they’re waiting for you at the source links.

SEC charging Nasdaq $10 million in civil suit settlement over Facebook’s IPO issues

SEC charing Nasdaq $10 million in civil suit settlement over Facebook's botched IPO

When Facebook became a public company in the summer of 2012, its initial public offering (IPO) didn’t go quite as well as the company expected. It went poorly enough that the US Securities and Exchange Commission took action against the exchange which handled Facebook’s IPO: Nasdaq. A civil suit filed against the exchange, alleging computer software errors that resulted in a lackluster IPO, was settled today — the exchange will pay $10 million to settle the suit. The settlement, of course, doesn’t mean that Nasdaq is confirming or denying the alleged issues its computer system incurred last year; said issues allegedly cost investors in the ballpark of $500 million. Probably best to un-friend Nasdaq now before things get awkward.

Google revamps Gmail with tabbed inbox on desktop and mobile

Image

Organization is the key to a happy inbox, and Google’s taking you one step closer to that stress-free experience. The company announced today that it’ll be bringing a new tabbed layout to the desktop and mobile versions of Gmail, safely filing messages where they belong. The redesign lets you add up to five tabs, reorganizing them via drag-and-drop. You can set senders to appear in specific tabs and can move messages up to the primary one with a star. The upgrade is coming to the desktop, Android and iOS version of Gmail in “the next few weeks,” though you can get a sneak peek on your desktop earlier by watching the mail program’s gear / settings menu in the interim. There’s also a video detailing the updates after the break, if you’re so inclined.
