We’ve seen several high-quality images in the past that have been assembled together to form one large image. The latest breakthrough was the 1-trillion pixel image that required a special file format to manage the 143GB file. Other popular ones include Chicago By Night at 1-gigapixel and Machu Picchu at 1.5-gigapixels.
Over in the forum Max pointed out a 13-gigapixel image of Harlem, which is astonishingly huge. There was no doubt that it was an awesome site, but navigating around the massively detailed photo was quite a chore. Well, that was until Richard mentioned the HD View option that the photo had.
I had never used this feature before on any image, but curiosity got the best of me so I tried it out. The downside is that it will require you to open Internet Explorer and install an add-on, but I can say without a doubt that it is worth it.
So what is HD View? It’s a project by a Microsoft Research group, and here is why they created it:
Recent advances in camera and sensor technology and software for stitching images together has led to the creation of images containing billions of pixels (gigapixels). These images are often panoramic, that is, they cover very wide fields of view. Since monitors typically contain only one to two million pixels, it is only possible to actually see 1/1000th of such image data at once.
…
HD View leverages current graphics hardware to allow smooth panning and zooming.
I think that this is something you really have to try out at least once, and here are some great places that use the technology:
- 13-gigapixel image of Harlem (created by stitching more than two-thousand 12-megapixel images)
- Several locations from Washington, and if you scroll to the bottom of the page they even have a few locations from Mars
- Berlin Wall (this might be my favorite)
- Variety of locations including Tahoe, Boston, and Yosemite
- Some nice hi-res images from the Microsoft HD View Team
So try out HD View and let us know what you think. I was quite stunned by it.

Microsoft has pushed out Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7, expanding availability of the latest version of the browser from just Windows 8/8.1 machines. The release – in 95 languages – will eventually be pushed out automatically, Microsoft says, with the promise of a 30-percent real-world boost in performance versus IE10. There’s also more security, […]
While Microsoft’s earlier Windows Phone ads were pretty hilarious, their recent ones weren’t that memorable, and while we’re not sure what their latest Internet Explorer ad has anything to do with the browser, at the very least it is fun to watch. Microsoft has recently debuted a new Internet Explorer ad and instead of going the typical tech-related ad style, Microsoft has opted for a short anime-styled ad to promote its browser. The anime stars freedom fighter, Inori Aizawa who is found running away from these killer robots, who manage to finally surround her. Just when you thought that all hope was lost, Aizawa activates her pendant, transforming her, placing an Internet Explorer pin in her hair and giving her super powers which we can’t help but be reminded of anime much like Sailor Moon.
While the ad does not actually promote IE in anyway, save for the IE-logo which doubles as a pin for Aizawa’s hair, if we had to read in between the lines, perhaps the killer robots could be seen as the competition. At one point Aizawa even throws up a shield which could be symbolic of how IE will be able to block threats against the user, such as malware and unwanted ads and popups, and with the destruction of the robots, perhaps it could be seen as Microsoft attempting to destroy the competition once and for all. Maybe we’re reading too much into this, but if you’re a fan of symbolism perhaps you might agree. In any case if you have a few minutes to spare, you can check out Microsoft’s anime-inspired ad in the video above!

In Windows 7 Microsoft made it so that multiple windows from the same application are grouped into the same icon, and when it comes to Internet Explorer it treats each tab as a window. That means if you have two tabs open in Internet explorer the Taskbar icon will show two previews when you click on it (like the screenshot above). Having it show all of the tab previews whenever you click on the Internet Explorer icon may get annoying since it takes an extra click to pass focus back to Internet Explorer, but you can always disable the feature.
To disable the IE tab previews in Windows 7 these are the steps you need to take:
- In Internet Explorer click the gear icon in the upper-right corner, and choose Internet Options:
- You should already be on the General tab. Click the Settings button in the Tabs section:
- Uncheck the Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar option:
- Restart Internet Explorer
Now with that in place the next time that you click on the Internet Explorer icon it will switch to the app rather than displaying a list of tabs that have been open in the browser.

OS & Browser Stats for Bloggers
Posted in: Today's ChiliThis article was written on August 30, 2007 by CyberNet.
WordPress.com is the home of nearly 1.4 million blogs, and in a days time they receive upwards of 12 million pageviews. There’s roughly 75,000 new posts among those blogs each day, along with 30,000 comments (not including the ones caught by Akismet). For that reason WordPress.com is an accurate measure of what tools the blogosphere is using.
Matt Mullenweg, the founding developer of WordPress, has posted some browser and operating system stats for the 115 million pageviews on WordPress.com in the last month. I’ve created pie charts using the information he posted to make the data easier to visualize:
As you can see IE has a much smaller market share among the blogosphere compared to the normal web usage stats. There were a few shocking points, and one of them is the slow adoption of Internet Explorer 7. I would have thought that the blogosphere would be more inclined to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7.
The other thing I found interesting was the relatively small Mac usage…Linux is even catching up to the Mac. Windows of course rules the operating system market with a whopping 90%, but the PSP managed to scrape in nearly 35,000 pageviews from the 115 million.
WordPress.ORG is a slightly different story when it comes to the stats, which is probably because the people visiting the site are slightly more tech savvy. These people are likely looking to start their own blog on their own server, and that’s not exactly something the average Joe would do. Here’s what the stats look like for WordPress.org:
- 52.73% – Firefox
- 36.77% – Internet Explorer
- 5.65% – Safari
- 2.89% – Opera
More WordPress.com stats are available here, including how many YouTube videos are embedded each day, how many files are uploaded, and how many blogs are being created. Check it out…it’s pretty interesting.
