Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone video hands-on: it works!

We just got our hands on Wi-FI Sync and guess what? It actually works — fancy that! For those of you out of the loop, Apple recently rejected this gem of an app (go figure), but thanks to the magic of jailbreaking, that was hardly the end of the road. Days later, Wi-Fi Sync ended up on Cydia (Mac-only, for now) with a completely-affordable price tag of $9.99, promising iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to sync their device with iTunes sans any cabling whatsoever. Since we’re notoriously lazy when it comes to actually plugging in our phones and syncing, we fired up the program on our jailbroken 3GS in order to see exactly what the law-abiders in attendance were missing out on.

Installation couldn’t have been easier. We parted ways with our Hamilton, downloaded the necessary companion software for our laptop, and fired up the application. The iPhone was immediately recognized, and after a few prompts we were ready for action. Syncing was just as easy as it normally is (with “easy” being a relative term here), just without that iPod wire hanging around and bumming everyone out. We will say, however, that things weren’t as snappy OTA as a standard hardwired connection. It was a bit sluggish on the first couple of runs, and although iTunes crashed a few times (boo), we’re fairly confident in saying that a poor WiFi connection was to blame for the jankiness. Once we migrated closer to the router, things went much smoother. Still unsure if it’s worth the investment? Then give the video past the break a look.

Bigfoot Networks trounces ping times with Killer 2100 network card

We haven’t been this worked up about a product since we realized that someone actually made a Hello Kitty warming blanket, and if we can convince our sound card to slide down a slot, we’ll probably be kicking our integrated Ethernet port to the curb in favor of the Killer 2100. All jesting aside, Bigfoot Networks has returned after 14 months of silence in order to debut the “world’s fastest online gaming card.” According to the company, this here NIC is equipped with a dedicated network processor, Windows stack bypass, Visual Bandwidth Control and “other optimizations” designed to provide the most optimal online gaming experience ever. For those drinking the Kool-Aid, it’ll be available for £86 ($127) in the coming weeks — we’d caution you to wait for benchmarks first, though. Or just buy a faster internet connection.

First non-Latin domain name goes live, trips out browsers

ICANN decided late last year that URLs would finally be allowed with non-Latin characters, but it wasn’t until this week that the first one was set free onto the world wide web. The new hot place to visit is http://موقع.وزارة-الأتصالات.مصر/, and while you’ll need to know a bit of Arabic to actually pronounce it, you don’t have to have any foreign language skills to click the link and see what happens. As of now, the site loads as http://xn--4gbrim.xn—-rmckbbajlc6dj7bxne2c.xn--wgbh1c/ in pretty much every browser we’ve tried here in the US, but all of the site content seems to populate just fine. Remember that URL gold rush from last century? Round two is officially on.

Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig sync up for 60GHz WiFi

We already heard that Hitachi, Panasonic and Toshiba would be delivering 60GHz wireless products in the latter half of this year, but it looks like a whole heap of other companies will be as well after this bombshell drops. The Wi-Fi Alliance and WiGig (which just nailed down a final spec in December) have finally got their respective ducks in a row, and thanks to a new partnership announced today, 60GHz WiFi products are now possible. For those unaware, 60GHz airwaves are typically reserved for high-bandwidth applications — think streaming a Blu-ray flick from a player to an HDTV sans any cabling. The two will be working in unison in order to create a next-generation certification program for products operating in the 60GHz band, and best of all, a “significant portion, if not all, of these devices are expected to also support traditional WiFi networking in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.” There’s no mention of when exactly the first 60GHz WiFi wares will begin to ship, but we can certainly say we’re eager to update this here tutorial when tri-band becomes reality.

Update: The rival WirelessHD alliance (updated to 1.1 today with support for 3DTV, HDCP 2.0, data applications and data rates in excess of 10Gbps) says it will support WiGig with dual-mode WirelessHD/WiGig silicon now available from SiBeam for sampling. Hey, what would a standard be if we didn’t have options?

Internet Explorer market share falls below 60 percent for first time, according to NetApplications

NetApplications has just released its browser market share stats for the month of April, and there is something notable here: Internet Explorer has fallen to a “historic low” of 59.95 percent market share, losing about 0.69 points since last month. Google’s Chrome continues its assault on Safari, reaching a 6.73 percent share (while Safari nabbed 4.72). Of course, Internet Explorer is still so far ahead of the rest of the pack it’s hard to make these losses — however significant — into a tragedy of epic proportions story for Microsoft, so we’re not going to do that. Keep in mind, as well, that NetApplications is not the only measurement of market share — and StatCounter, by comparison, currently estimates IE’s share at about 51.42 percent. InstantAction goes live with browser-based gaming model

Remember InstantAction? You know, that startup that debuted at GDC in an effort to take on OnLive and catch the world ablaze with browser-based embedded gaming? If you’ve forgotten the dirty-dirty on this here company, be sure and give our prior hands-on a look; once you’re up to speed, you may be interested in knowing that the company’s first weekend in business (in the consumer’s eye, anyway) is this one you’re living in right now. The new “direct-to-consumer online video game distribution service” has gone live with LucasArts’ The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, enabling gamers to embed full titles into blogs, Facebook profiles and pretty much any other site that’ll handle an HTML embed string. The magic involves a delicate mix of in-browser, thin-client, and progressive downloading technologies, and while this title may not float your boat, the concept could be gold for indie developers looking to reach directly to potential clients. Microsoft weighs in: ‘the future of the web is HTML5’

Where Steve Jobs leads, Microsoft follows — how’s that for shaking up the hornet’s nest? It’s said in jest, of course, but we’ve just come across a post from the General Manager for Internet Explorer, Dean Hachamovitch, and the perspective expressed by him on the subject of web content delivery broadly agrees with the essay penned by Jobs yesterday on the very same subject. Echoing the Apple CEO’s words, Hachamovitch describes HTML5 as “the future of the web,” praising it for allowing content to be played without the need for plug-ins and with native hardware acceleration (in both Windows 7 and Mac OS X). He goes on to identify H.264 as the best video codec for the job — so much so that it’ll be the only one supported in IE9’s HTML5 implementation — before turning to the dreaded subject of Flash.

This is where it gets good, because he literally repeats one of Jobs’ six pillars of Flash hate: “reliability, security, and performance” are not as good as Microsoft would like them. Where Hachamovitch diverges from Apple’s messiah, however, is in describing Flash as an important part of “a good consumer experience on today’s web,” primarily because it’s difficult for the typical consumer to access Flash-free content. Still, it’s got to be depressing for Adobe’s crew when the best thing either of the two biggest players in tech has to say about your wares is that they’re ubiquitous. Wonder how Shantanu Narayen is gonna try and spin this one.

P.S. : it’s notable that in multiple paragraphs of discussing “the future,” Microsoft’s IE general fails to once mention the fabled Silverlight, itself a rich media browser plug-in. Given Silverlight’s featured role in the Windows Phone 7 infrastructure and other things like Netflix, we doubt it’s on the outs, but there are sure to be some sour faces greeting Hachamovitch this morning.

Report: iPad grabbed 0.03 percent of all web traffic in its first week on earth

Yesterday, when Apple announced it was pushing back the international launch of the iPad until the end of May, high demand was cited — over 500,000 units delivered, it said. And today, we’ve got a report out from NetApplications that indicates the iPad might be quickly making inroads with users. Over the first week of the device’s public availability, the report says, the iPad nabbed about 0.03 percent of all web traffic. For comparison, the iPhone averages about 0.51 percent of traffic. This number nearly matches web traffic for BlackBerrys in March — 0.04 percent (Android grabbed up 0.07 percent, as did Windows Mobile). Of course, NetApplications tracks only a sampling of website traffic to gather its data, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for longer term trends.

Google Cloud Print service aims for unified, universal web printing method

So you’ve seen how Apple intends to handle printing on its web-centric mobile device, now how about Google? The Mountain View crew has decided to solve one of Chrome OS‘ significant shortcomings — namely the lack of a printer stack or drivers — by interposing itself between apps and the printing hardware. Essentially, when you want to print you’ll be sending your request over to a Googlestation up in the clouds, which in turn will translate those instructions and forward them along to the nearest paper tarnisher. We say nearest, presuming that’s what you’d want, but the big deal here is that you’ll be able to use any device to print on any printer anywhere in the (internet-connected) world. It’s quite the brute force approach, but at least it assures you that whether you’re using a mobile, desktop or web app, you’ll be able to print without fear of compatibility issues. This project is still at a very early stage, but code and dev documentation are available now. Hit the source link to learn more.

New Mexico Rail Runner train gets lit with WiMAX, sets a good example

Oh sure, we’ve seen the occasional big city train get their own WiFi / WiMAX installation, but when a state like New Mexico steps up and does it, we take notice. The New Mexico Rail Runner, which travels some 95 miles between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, is now lit with WiMAX along the entire route, and the service is being provided gratis for all who ride. Better still, the New Mexico Mid-Region Council of Governments has no intentions of ever charging patrons in order to recoup the $2.4 million investment. We’re told that users can expect download rates of up to 6Mbps and upload speeds nearing 4Mbps, and we’re desperately hopeful that other states will take notice and attempt to get with the program. America’s already way behind most every European nation when it comes to rail travel, but toss a “free WiMAX!” sign on the door and you just might coax these car-lovin’ Yanks into going mass transit.
