Apple details Photo Stream as its own social network

Apple first introduced Photo Stream back with the debut of iOS 6 and iCloud but today they showed us a little bit more about this social network in disguise. Yup, we said it. This is their new social network type photo sharing and commenting system called Photo Stream so check it out below.

Photo Stream with iCloud and iOS 6 on the iPhone 5 synchronizes your photos on all your devices, and now you can share those Photo Streams with friends. When your friends see new streams pop up, they can view and comment on them as well. You can follow all of your favorite friends just like Instagram. We heard a little on this before, but everything is getting official now.

That brand new improved and thinner 8 megapixel camera will be snapping away some quality photos for both you Instagram users, and soon you Photo Stream users. Photo Streams will be accessible from iOS devices, Aperture, as well as PC’s and Mac’s. We have a feeling Android smartphones won’t be able to enjoy or follow these streams — which makes sense. I’m sure we’ll be learning more about Photo Streams as things continue and we have a feeling Apple has big plans for this “social” feature.

iOS 6 Will Arrive on September 19 With Better Siri, New Maps, Revamped iMessage and Passbook [IOS 6]

We’ve seen and heard about many of the new features coming to iOS 6 already, but with the announcement of the iPhone 5, we now know exactly when it’s coming: September 19. More »

iOS 6 debuts on the iPhone 5

Milk and honey, strawberries and cream, sugar and spice, husband and wife, iOS 6 and iPhone 5. They all jive together and dance best when synergized, and the same can be said about iOS 6, Apple’s latest version of their highly successful mobile operating system. Of course, we did see a teaser of iOS 6 at WWDC earlier this year, where we are led by the nose to discover the wonders of tighter Facebook integration in addition to a spanking new map application that lessens the dependency on Google Maps, Passbook support, and “Do Not Disturb” to boot. Well, the iOS 6 is now official where it was spotted running on the newly minted iPhone 5. Check out what else there is about iOS 6 in the extended post.

iPhone 5 4-inch Retina display detailed with massive resolution

The iPhone 5′s display has been revealed today at Apple’s press event, bringing with it a lovely 1136 x 640 screen resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio across 4-inches of space. This device will be rolling out with a Retina quality display, mind you, at 326 PPI, amongst the most high-definition on the market today. This display offers a 5th row of icons for the iOS 6 experience and still fits in our hand with the same width as the iPhone 4S and before.

This device has also been shown to be bringing an improved camera on the back – though it is still called 8 megapixels, it’s a big boost, as well as audio and video enhancements as well. The iPhone 5 will come with three microphones for better noise cancellation than ever before as well as an improved A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 is set to bring on a new era of mobile products for Apple with its new 16-pin port plug for USB and will be coming soon to an Apple store near you.

iOS 6 gets official debut on the iPhone 5: Maps, Passbook, iCloud Tabs and more

Now that the iPhone 5 is officially out of the bag, it’s time to talk software. Apple hasn’t exactly kept its cards close to its chest in regards to iOS 6: Cupertino teased the software at WWDC, letting us in on the direct Facebook integration, the new Maps application, Passbook and “Do Not Disturb” in the process. Today the OS gets official, and Scott Forstall demoed the software on the iPhone 5.

Not too much new here, but the software is out of its beta phase and ready to ship. One of the most hyped additions to iOS 6 has been the Maps application, which includes Siri navigation, 3D building view and satellite imagery. In Safari, there’s now a full-screen mode and you’ll be able to share tabs from your desktop with your phone (dubbed iCloud Tabs). We’re also seeing Passbook in action once again, bringing up a plane ticket at the lockscreen when you get to the airport, for example. One new thing here: Delta is confirmed as a partner for this digital ticket service.

As we’ve already known, on the Siri front you can bring up sports ranking and Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings via the voice assistant. And, of course, one of the most welcome new features is FaceTime over cellular — no mention of whether that will be supported on all carriers, but it certainly looks that way. iOS 6 will be available on September 19th (also when the iPhone 5 will go on sale), and it’s coming to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch.

A6 chip introduced for iPhone 5 with fastest-ever performance

Apple has introduced the A6 chip for their next-generation iPhone 5 hardware this afternoon at the event which also showed off several more impressive bits of hardware and software enhancements. The iPhone 5′s A6 chip has been touted as having 2x faster CPU performance than the previous chip and brings on 2x the graphics performance as well. This chip has been shown as bringing on launches of apps at nearly 2x the speed as the previous iPhone on the whole.

With a launch of your Pages app, you’ll be going 2.1x the speed, with an opening of a Keynote app, 1.7x the speed. This device’s chip is also tuned to bring on the best gaming experience the iPhone has ever seen, EA coming to the stage this week to show off its graphics prowess. EA’s Rob Murray showed off Real Racing 3 with “full console quality” and “for the first time, rear view mirrors!”

iPhone 5 officially announced with 4-inch display, A6 CPU and LTE for $199 on September 21st

iPhone 5 officially announced with 4inch display, A6 CPU and LTE for $199 on September 21st

Apple may be notoriously secretive and tight lipped, but the company appears to be getting worse and worse at actually keeping things under wraps. The iPhone 5 appears to be the most leaked handset in existence. Thankfully, the suspense is over, the next-gen iPhone is finally here and it does, in fact, go by the numerical title of 5. Just like the parts that have been circulating on the web, this is a glass and aluminum two-tone affair and, at 7.6mm it’s a full 18 percent thinner than the 4S (though, contrary to what Tim Cook said on stage, one slide has the iPhone 5 at 8mm even). It’s even 20 percent lighter at 112 grams, which is even less than the mostly plastic Galaxy S III. It’s all those “magical” things and it packs a larger 4-inch in-cell display. The new version of Apple’s Retina panel is 1136 x 640, which clocks in at a more than respectable 326ppi. It also sports better color saturation with full sRGB rendering. That new longer screen allows for an extra set of icons to be displayed on the home screen, and first party apps have already been tweaked to take advantage of the additional real estate. The iWork suite, Garage Band and iMovie have all been updated. Older apps will still work too, though they’ll be displayed in a letterbox format until an update is issued. The tweaked ratio puts the iPhone 5 display closer to 16:9, but it’s not quite there.

iPhone 5 last-minute leaks include A6 chip and Qualcomm LTE

With less than two hours left before the big iPhone 5 Apple event [tune in to our liveblog], several bits and pieces have leaked including what very much appears to be the logic board from the device, complete with components. This piece of hardware is set to include the motor and the radio, both a brand new A6 chip and a bit of Qualcomm hardware to back up 4G LTE connectivity. This will trump the previous devices on the market including the iPhone 4S and the iPad 3rd generation devices, both of which use an A5X chip.

This device’s collection of architecture straight from AppleHD blog includes a MDM9615M modem from Qualcomm, this ready for 4G LTE. There’s a nano-SIM tray here as expected, this connecting well with the collection of tips and notes over the past few weeks from component creators – and from supposed “accidental” leaks from mobile carriers as well. This device will almost certainly be working with power well beyond what the previous iPhone model offered up and will definitely have the graphics power of at least the current-generation iPad.

Note that this device may be accompanied by an iPod touch with the power of the previous iPhone – this following the line of releases that fall in two-step from Apple’s mobile universe. The iPod touch release may well be coming later this year – October, more than likely, with a set of other updated units in the mobile line like the iPad mini – or iPad Air – whatever you’d like to call it for now.

Stay tuned to SlashGear all day long to see all the Apple news straight from the source – we’ve got a liveblog of the iPhone 5 event starting right before the big news drop at 10AM PST. Check our pre-event hardware rundown as well as our pre-event software wrap-up to see what this event may bring – and get pumped up – we’re almost there!
