Today Apple has unveiled their 5th generation iPad called the iPad Air, coming in a size and shape reflective of the success of the iPad mini. This iPad Air works with the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit multi-touch display as in the 4th generation iPad, working again with IPS LCD technology. The overall size and weight of […]
With the ushering in of new hardware on both the desktop and the mobile front, the folks at Apple this week have brought on a new collection of software updates as well. They’ve update iLife in full – working with new versions of iMovie, iPhoto, and Garageband for both iOS and OS X. These updates […]
Apple’s iOS 7 operating system for mobile devices was unveiled in the middle of the year during Apple’s WWDC 2013 event. While the update was a long overdue redesign of the operating system’s overall look and feel, there were many who criticized it, claiming it looked too cartoony, and that the gradient effects for some of the app icons looked “cheap”. While we’re pretty sure this is not how Apple went about designing iOS 7, YouTuber Vaclav Krejci seems to believe that iOS 7’s home screen can actually be recreated using nothing more than Microsoft Word and some clever manipulation and an extensive knowledge of Microsoft’s word processing software.
In the video above, Krejci shows how to recreate iOS 7’s home screen using various tools in Microsoft Word, and based on what we can see in the sped up version of the entire process, it is mind boggling just how many similarities iOS 7’s design has with some of the tools offered in Microsoft Word. If anything, this video lends credence to the detractors and critics’ claims of iOS 7 being cheap and cartoony, and to a certain extent we can’t help but agree after watching this video. In any case we’re guessing this video was meant to be more informative and funny rather than a criticism, but if you have some time to spare, you will definitely want to check this out.

Observe, citizens, as this delightfully talented and probably unhinged gentleman recreates the iOS 7 from scratch using only the tools in Microsoft Word. There is no good explanation for this, but I still can’t tear my eyes away from it.
Nokia isn’t the only company that has some major announcements to make on October 22 as Apple also has some news to share on the same date. Many analysts and journalists expect the event to revolve are the announcement of a new iPad, but one bit of news that was supposed to be announced during the event has reportedly leaked out ahead of its expected reveal. GarageBand For iOS 7 Expected To Be Free With In-App Purchases original content from Ubergizmo.
It seems that someone at Apple got a wee bit excited and accidentally revealed way too much ahead of the company’s Tuesday event. Briefly appearing on its Built-in Apps page for the iPhone 5s was a footnote indicating that GarageBand will be available as free app download. Of course, with in-app purchase options. iOS 7, […]
New iLife And iWork Icons Appear On Apple’s Website, GarageBand Becomes Free
Posted in: Today's ChiliCome 22nd of October, Apple is expected to announce several new products and updates to existing ones, such as the changes made to their iWork and iLife suites that will be receiving an iOS 7 makeover. The other day it was spotted that iPhoto and GarageBand had new iOS 7 icons, and now thanks to an update to its Built-in Apps page, we are now getting a glimpse at the rest of the revised icons, such as iMovie, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. Interestingly enough it seems that Apple has also noted that their music creation app, GarageBand, will become a free basic download for all iOS 7 devices, although the kicker is that there will be in-app purchases where additional instruments and sounds can be bought for a fee.
It was originally thought that GarageBand would be included in the move to make iLife and iWork apps free for iOS, but licensing problems might have kept Apple from doing so, at least until now where presumably Apple has managed to work out a licensing deal with the creators of the sounds and instruments used in the program. Apart from a possible announcement regarding the updates to the iWork and iLife apps for iOS, Apple is also expected to announce new iPads – the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, as well as refreshed MacBook Pro computers and the Mac Pro as well.

Apple has significantly redesigned the system in iOS 7. Basically the iOS 7 install file, which weighs up to 1GB or more, is automatically downloaded on a compatible device and the user is prompted to install said update whenever the device is restarted. The redesign of iOS 7 automatic updates has bothered a California resident so much so that he has decided sue Apple CEO Tim Cook in a small claims court. The suit is titled Mark David Menacher vs. Tim Cook and has been filed in California Superior Court’s San Diego County branch.
The iOS 7 install file is downloaded automatically when the device is plugged in and connected to a Wi-Fi network, however users have to grant permission before the update can be installed. Menacher seeks a way to delete automatically downloaded update files from an iOS device as well as $50 in remuneration. Since users can’t delete the files right now, they end up losing 1GB or more of the valuable onboard storage, and this has irked many iOS 6 users. Menacher says that in relation to iOS 7, Apple’s disregard for customer preferences is “corporate thuggery.” He even goes on to make a comparison between Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, saying that the former pushed employees to make customers happy, whereas Cook apparently “cultivates a culture of contempt for customer satisfaction in pursuit of corporate profits.” Both Apple, or Tim Cook in his personal capacity, haven’t commented on this lawsuit as yet.

Given that Apple has pretty much updated most of its native apps to match the new look and feel of iOS 7, we’re sure there are some who are wondering when will those updates make its way to other Apple apps. Well the good news is that if you’re a frequent user of Garage Band or iPhoto, it seems that a makeover of those apps is on the horizon, thanks to new icons for either app that was sighted recently. The app icons have been redesigned to look flatter, but unfortunately as to how the app looks inside remains unknown, but presumably we will be looking at a theme that will be more cohesive with iOS 7.
There are other Apple apps that have yet to be updated, namely Apple’s iWork suite of apps, such as Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and iMovie, all of which have yet to receive the same treatment, but presumably is in the works (hopefully). No word on when these updated apps will be released, but some are speculating that a release next week is possible, so check back with us then to see if this report pans out.
