Bill To Make “Kill Switch” Mandatory On Mobile Devices Sold In California

Bill To Make Kill Switch Mandatory On Mobile Devices Sold In California

It has been reported multiple times in the past that lawmakers have been leaning on OEMs to bundle anti-theft technology with their smartphones and tablets, most prominent backers of this cause include the attorney general for New York and the San Francisco district attorney. Now, California’s Mark Leno, a Democratic State Senator, has introduced a bill which would make it mandatory for OEMs to include some kind of a “kill switch” in their mobiles or tablets before they’re sold in the state of California. This bill is being backed by the San Francisco district attorney George Gascón.

Disable Find My iPhone On iOS 7 Through A Bug

Its not unusual to find bugs in software that can render any one of its security features useless. Find My iPhone is an iCloud based feature on Apple’s smartphone, it allows users to locate their iPhone on a map if its stolen or it simply goes missing. Even if a device is not protected by a passcode, the feature can’t be turned off without entering Apple ID credentials. However a new bug has been discovered that would allow anyone to disable Find My iPhone on iOS 7 within a minute.

iOS 7.1 Beta 5 Closes More Jailbreak Exploits

iOS 7.1 Beta 5 Closes More Jailbreak ExploitsIt has been a little over a month since the Evad3rs team release their untethered Evasi0n iOS 7 jailbreak for iOS devices. Now the bad news is that if you were hoping to upgrade to iOS 7.1, you might want to hold off on doing so because according to reports, it looks like Apple is wasting no time in closing up the exploits used to jailbreak iOS 7. We guess this is to be expected, although there are times when Apple misses an exploit here and there that allows the team to continue jailbreaking the iOS platform even after updates.

Apple had reportedly closed off one critical exploit in iOS 7.1 beta 4, and now according to Evasi0n hacker, iH8sn0w, it seems that with the recent release of the latest iOS 7.1 beta 5, it closed an additional number of exploits that could have been used to make a future jailbreak. This is not to say that jailbreaking it would be impossible, but it would definitely make things a lot harder. Of course you can choose to keep your jailbreak by not updating to iOS 7.1, but given that iOS 7.1 is bringing about a host of major changes and some redesigns, chances are you might be tempted to update in order to experience these changes. There’s still no word on when iOS 7.1 will be released to the public, so for the sake of jailbreakers out there, here’s hoping the hackers will be able to find something new between now and then.

iOS 7.0.5 For iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Released

    iphone-5s-review-013

Apple today rolled out a rather rare iOS firmware update. Its rare because this firmware is only meant for the two new iPhones, and that too in one particular region. iOS 7.0.5 for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c has been released to fix “network provisioning” issues on various Chinese models, Apple hasn’t specified exactly what those issues are. Users who already have iOS 7.0.4 installed on their iPhones can simply grab the update over the air, it weighs in at just 35MB. As you were, rest of the world, the update is exclusive to Chinese customers.

iOS In The Car Simulation Video Surfaces

    iosinthecar5

It was at WWDC 2013 when we first heard about iOS in the Car, a new feature that extends Apple’s popular mobile platform in automobiles. Several manufacturers have already committed to supporting the feature in their new models, where a modified UI of iOS 7 will be displayed on the in-dash display. Though up till now, Apple hasn’t talked much about this feature, it hasn’t even clarified when it will be launched. Steven Troughton-Smith, a well known developer, has posted a simulation video of iOS in the Car, he previously leaked screenshots of said feature earlier this month.

iOS 7 Hits 80% Adoption Rate

ios-7Back in September 2013, iOS 7’s adoption rate was at 52% only a week after its launch. Those numbers quickly rose to 74.1% in December, and now during Apple’s quarterly earnings call, it was revealed that iOS 7 is now installed on 80% of compatible iOS devices around the world. This is a pretty significant number despite the fact that there are a handful of older, but still popular, iOS devices out there who are not eligible for the update. These figures were announced by Apple’s CFO, Peter Oppenheimer who called it the most popular operating system in the world, although chances are he might have meant most popular mobile operating system.

To put things into perspective, Android’s latest operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat is at 1.4% in terms of adoption, although presumably those numbers might have increased since we last heard. This is one of the drawbacks to the Android operating system where OEMs sometimes release new devices with older versions still preinstalled, despite the latest build being available. Other hurdles such as carrier approval and device incompatibility are also a factor as to why newer versions of Android are adopted slower compared to iOS. Of course there are those who run custom ROMs based on the latest build of Android, such as CyanogenMod, which aren’t reported, so for all we know, those numbers could be higher.

SteelSeries Stratus Controller Price Not as Bad as First Thought

If you are an avid gamer on your iPhone or iPad that runs the iOS 7 operating system, you may be in the need of a controller. I think any serious iOS 7 gamer will want one, as touch-based controls suck. We got a bit excited at the prospects of the SteelSeries Stratus wireless gaming controller that we talked about earlier this month. We were excited right up until SteelSeries smashed our testicles with a boot when the price was tipped to be $100.

That is a lot of green for a tiny little controller. The Stratus controller has now officially launched for you to pre-order and the good news is your testes (and your wallet) won’t feel the pain quite as badly. The official pre-order price for the controller in the US is $79.99 (USD).

That price certainly isn’t cheap, but it’s better than $100. Now for the catch, you need to pre-order the Stratus to get it at that price so I suggest you run along and do it right now. Seriously, go do it now. You can pre-order via SteelSeries.

iOS 7′s Reboot Bug Will Be Ironed Out… But Not Until iOS 7.1

iOS 7′s Reboot Bug Will Be Ironed Out... But Not Until iOS 7.1

iOS 7, perhaps the most divisive software update in Apple’s history of mobile devices, has suffered from one particularly annoying bug since launching last September. Random restarts have plagued a number of users, and finally Apple is doing something about it.
