Catch Notes to hang up its boots on August 30th

DNP Catch Notes shutters

Catch Notes never quite caught on as much as Evernote did, but we’ll bet its loyal users will still be upset to know it’s shuttering on August 30th. An announcement posted on the company’s website reveals that it’s terminating its note-taking service, which includes its Android and iOS apps as well as its browser extensions. While the end of Catch Notes is nigh, it doesn’t seem the company itself is closing up, as the same announcement talks about moving “in a different direction.” Until we hear what the firm has in mind, those who’ve been using the service over the years can export their notes via Catch.com. You can then import the CVS or the ZIP file to other productivity tools like Evernote, OneNote, Simplenote or Springpad. There’s less than 30 days to find a new service that tickles your fancy, but at least you won’t have to start from scratch.

[Thanks, Michael]

Apple VP shuffle has Bob Masfield on Chips, duties split in two

There’s word from “sources with knowledge” this afternoon of a bit of a move inside Apple of a few key employees including, first and foremost, Bob Mansfield. It would seem, according to 9to5Mac, that Mansfield’s recent move to Special Projects was done for several reasons, one of which was to help with the transition of […]

Imgur: Imgur, everyone’s favorite super simple image hosting site, has had an Android app out for about a month now. As of today, though, the app is also available for iOS users, and now nearly everyone can be just a little bit less productive, together. You can do virtually everything you’d be doing on the web: browse images, upload, and manage your account and albums. And of course, all the interactive features that make Imgur such a huge draw are in teh app in full force. You can comment and vote on other people’s uploads to your heart’s content. [Free]

Aviary for iOS update adds Instagram and email sharing options, extra magic

Aviary for iOS update adds Instagram and email sharing options

Aviary has certainly been busy over the past couple of months, having recently overhauled its photo-editing app for Android, as well as launching on Windows Phone 8. Fortunately, the industrious company has also found time to work on its iOS app, which has just been updated to allow picture sharing via Instagram and good old-fashioned email. The sharing menu now features two new buttons that’ll push the selected image into Instagram’s own app, or launch Mail and add it to the body of an email. According to the update changelog, the new version also has “a bonus extra dose of magic added.” We asked the folks at Aviary exactly how they implemented this exciting feature, but frustratingly, they wouldn’t tell us.

iPad mini 2 housing leaks aside iPad 5

Though the changes appear to be few, the next-generation casings for both the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 appear to be hitting the factory floor with bits and pieces all their own. This double dose of Apple hardware – if it does indeed prove to be legitimate, shows the iPad family to be […]

New update brings Gmail notifications to Pebble for iOS users

DNP Pebble for iOS finally gets Gmail and other IMAP email notifications

Pebble owners who’ve paired their watches with iOS devices have been lagging behind their Android-using counterparts, at least when it comes to email notifications. A new update for the iOS app, available today, is bridging that divide by introducing Gmail and other IMAP account notifications to Pebble. Previously, iDevice owners were limited to the default iOS 6 mail client, whereas Android users could choose between the default option or their Gmail accounts. Version 1.2 of Pebble’s iOS app includes a very simple setup for adding Gmail (or generic IMAP) accounts, and alerts will be pushed so long as the Pebble app is running in the background. To download the update, head on over to the source link below.

Strategy Analytics: Android claimed nearly 80 percent of Q2 smartphone share

Strategy Analytics Android represents nearly 80 percent of phones shipped in Q2

Multiple analyst groups recently gave us a look at second quarter smartphone market share by the manufacturer. Today, Strategy Analytics is breaking down that market share by platform — and it’s clear that Google is still on a roll. Android jumped 10 points year-over-year to reach almost 80 percent of the world smartphone market during the spring quarter, hitting a record high. Some of this rise came at the expense of Apple, which dipped three points, but most of the casualties were in the “others” category led by BlackBerry and Nokia’s soon-to-vanish Symbian. Microsoft can claim a small victory, though. Windows Phone climbed slightly to 3.9 percent of the market in Q2, giving it a level of influence not seen in three years. While we’re not necessarily looking at the new status quo for the smartphone industry, it’s clear that the days of neck and neck competition are behind us.

Codename Cygnus Interactive Audio Drama: Two-Way Radio

Receiving transmission. Here’s our intel: an independent developer called Reactive Studios is working on a top secret game for iOS devices. It’s called Codename Cygnus, an interactive drama where you play a spy. Here’s where it gets interesting: the game plays like old drama radio shows, except you can talk to it. I hope it doesn’t have commercials.

codename cygnus for ios

From what I’ve seen, er, heard, it plays out like a cheesy crime drama crossed with a choose-your-own-adventure type of game. Other characters talk to you to relay what’s happening and to give you hints and options. You then select your response by speaking into your iOS device.

You can also respond by tapping an onscreen button, but that’s not too gimmicky is it?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to pledge at least $10 (USD) on Kickstarter to obtain a copy of Codename Cygnus.

Seriously though, if I had to play a game that required me to talk, I’d rather play one that lets me give orders, like a general or a basketball coach. Or maybe a detective or scientist who has to dictate findings to a recorder. Instead of making you feel like a spy, it seems to me like Codename Cygnus could unintentionally turn you to a caveman who only converses in one word grunts: “Hostile!” “Down!” “Me!” “Winner!” Then again, the game’s not finished yet; maybe it’ll end up being way more exciting and varied than I think it is.
