Thor: The Dark World mobile game heralds incoming film

This week Gameloft continues their high-powered relationship with Marvel Comics in a teaser for no less than Thor: The Dark World. This came will be appearing on Android devices as well as Apple mobile devices of all kinds – iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch included, and will be appearing close to the release of the film itself, later this year. What you’ll see in this game is another birds-eye-view of a superhero, keeping with the successful modes introduced in games such as the Amazing Spider-Man not too long ago.

Gameloft’s approach with games such as these is the same – it would seem, and appears to have been proven several times over – as those full-fledged original storyline games they’ve been releasing for years. They put in just as much effort here as they would their own title, so to speak, this breaking the trend of major-label movie-sourced concepts released alongside Hollywood films almost without fail since the dawn of video games.

Here you’re going all-in, complete with support and updates well after the film is released.

“Thor: The Dark World – The Official Game will allow fans of the franchise to play as one of Marvel’s most iconic Super Heroes in a game of epic scope and beauty. With this new game, we are further expanding the successful relationship between Marvel and Gameloft.” – Javon Frazier, VP Games Marketing at Marvel

Unfortunately you’ll not be able to get your hands on this title until later this Fall, again much closer to the actual release of the movie itself. Unlike Gameloft’s release of Iron Man 3, this game relies a bit more on a more traditional gaming structure, aiming to bring Thor to you from overhead, allowing you a full-on god-like vision of your environment. Strike true!

BONUS: Can’t wait to play it on NVIDIA SHIELD? Not surprising, especially given the original code-name. We’ll still have to wait until Autumn though, no matter how hardcore the combination might be – stay tuned!

Apple Developer portal breach credited to security researcher

If you’ve been wondering why Apple’s Developer portal was down for a few days, blame it on a security breach. Apple announced yesterday that their dev center was hacked into, but no personal information was accessed, thankfully. So who’s behind the intrusion? A security researcher is taking the credit.

slafadevelopers

Independent security researcher Ibrahim Balic claims that his effort to breach into the developer portal was not intended to be malicious at all, and he ended up reporting all of the vulnerabilities that he found to Apple. Balic found 13 bugs in total, and was even able to access user details, but he only accessed 73 Apple employees just to prove to the company about the vulnerability.

Balic claims he comes in peace and even contacted Apple to make sure he wasn’t putting them through any difficulty. He says that he hasn’t published or used any of the information that he was able to access, but some users have reported getting password reset notifications after a possible breach to their accounts.

Apple’s Developer portal has been down for four days now, and it’s still showing that it’s down right now. There’s no word on when we might expect it to come back to full throttle, but most likely in the next day or two. While this is certainly an inconvenience for developers, this could pose an even greater problem for beta software versions.

We could see a delay on beta releases for both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks. It seems Apple is focusing on getting their Developer portal back up and running before anything else, which means it may take longer for beta versions to release. However, we still have plenty of time before Apple’s proposed fall release of iOS 7.

Canary Makes Monitoring Home Security Easy and Cheap

If you find yourself out of the house while traveling, at work or on vacation, home security is definitely a concern for most of us. While there are many solutions on the market today, most of them are expensive, difficult to install or just downright useless due to false alarms.

Now, a new startup called Canary is about to launch what could revolutionize the home security business, with a new device that’s a complete, affordable home monitoring system in a soda-can sized package.

canary home security system 1

Canary CEO Adam Sager describes the device as the “first smart home security device for everyone.” Setup takes just about 30 seconds – all you need to do is place it in a common area in your home (i.e. the living room, dining room or foyer) plug it in and connect it to your network. From that point on, you’ll be able to monitor your home from anywhere you have connectivity on your mobile device.

Sager has a background in large-scale corporate security, and realized that he had no such monitoring in his own home. When looking at the market he realised that most of the solutions out there are costly, and usually involve complex installations. And if you’re a renter, you really don’t have a good option at all. This inspired him to create a product which is accessible to everyone, from a technological, usability and cost perspective.

canary security 3

The Canary measures just 6-inches tall by 3-inches in diameter, and combines a HD video camera (with night vision) and sensors which can monitor movement, sound, vibration, temperature, humidity and air quality. This package of information empowers you to monitor just about everything you’d ever want about your home environment remotely. The device captures data and streams it to the “cloud” where a companion mobile app can receive alerts and track information remotely. All data is stored with financial-grade encryption, which should allay fears about privacy and security of your information.

Sophisticated algorithms help Canary to learn about your environment, so it can gradually understand what is normal or unusual activity. It even uses pattern recognition technology to help discern the difference between your cat moving around the room and a cat burglar to decrease false alarms.

canary app screens

The mobile app provides information in easy-to-understand plain English, and can not only show status information, but can send emergency alerts, and display trend reports for key data points (like temperature and humidity). When an alert is triggered, you can choose to trigger the Canary’s built-in siren, or contact the appropriate authorities to let them know about a break-in or other problem.

Of course, you don’t just have to use Canary when there’s an emergency. The company envisions owners using the device to remotely monitor kids, pets and the elderly, thanks to its built in camera, microphone and speaker.

Since I live in a larger home, I had some concerns about the ability for a single Canary to monitor the whole environment. Thankfully, the application will support multiple devices, so I’d recommend putting one on each floor of your house if you live in a multi-floor dwelling.

Best of all, The Canary is moderately priced. The device will retail for just $199(USD), but early birds who help fund the production through Canary’s Indiegogo campaign will be able to score one for as little as $169. The project kicks off this morning, so you’ll want to move quick if you want to get in on the earliest batch, which they hope to ship in Q1 2014.

Apple Developer portal: We’ll be back soon

According to a brand new update to Apple’s official developer portal, downtime occurring this past Thursday was due to an attempted intruder attack. While Apple suggests that “sensitive personal information” had no chance of being accessed, downtime occurred due to Apple itself taking the portal down to make certain of the extent of the attack, front to back.

slafadevelopers

The possibility of “developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses” being accessed spurned Apple to take the entire portal out of commission until a full report could be made. Apple notes that they’re currently in the process of rebuilding their entire database and updating their server software.

In short: hold tight.

“We’ll be back soon.

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

develoeprsbaig

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

If your program membership was set to expire during this period, it has been extended and your app will remain on the App Store. If you have any other concerns about your account, please contact us.

Thank you for your patience.” – Apple for Apple Developer Portal

Meanwhile Apple continues pushing new iterations of both mobile and desktop software in OS X Mavericks and iOS 7, both of which hit the road in earnest later this year. The public saw iWork iCloud integration in the most recent beta release, while iOS 7 and Mavericks remain developers-only.

Rovio Account now globally available for iOS and Android devices

What does the global rollout of Rovio Account mean for completists like us? It means that whenever we download Angry Birds to a new Android or iOS device, we can just pull down our current progress — sparing us the chore of having to re-complete Poached Eggs, Mighty Hoax and Danger Above from scratch. So far, the option is only available on the original Angry Birds and The Croods, but the game maker has promised that the rest of its titles will be included in the near future.

VLC returns to iOS after two-year hiatus, brings AirPlay and Dropbox integration

VLC returns to iOS after two-year hiatus

VideoLAN’s original VLC for iOS had a brief and rocky history: open source licensing quirks led to the media player being pulled from the App Store just months after launch. More than two years later, it’s back with a compatible license — and it’s bringing a slew of new features in return for the wait. VLC 2.0 supports all the file formats of its desktop counterpart while throwing in AirPlay, background audio, network streaming and numerous smaller tweaks. It’s also better suited to sharing with support for Dropbox, the iOS sharing prompt, web downloads and WiFi uploads. The revived VLC app is gradually rolling out now, and its source code should be available for tinkering by July 19th.

Evernote iOS app updated with Skitch support

Evernote has pushed out an update for its iOS app, tossing some more features into the mix, as well as support for Skitch. Those who update to version 5.4 will find Favorites on the iPhone transformed into Shortcuts, the ability to annotate notes with Skitch, and for Premium users, a new related notes feature that pulls up relevant past content.

Evernote

The shortcuts addition is something that can be pulled up with a tap on the star tab, revealing shortcuts to a variety of content, as well as saved searches if desired. The shortcuts are synced across multiple Evernote apps for those who shift between devices. Shortcuts can be created for notebooks, notes, and such by tapping the same star tab from within the content.

As mentioned, the Skitch integration with the update allows users to mark up their content, whether it is a note, an image, or a PDF. Users will need to grab the Skitch app in order to use the new functionality, after which point a Skitch icon will be available to tap, pulling up the feature. Using Skitch with PDF files is reserved for Premium users.

The related notes is as simple as it sounds – related notes being pulled up beneath newer notes, making it easier to find content you might need from your notebooks while working on something else. As long as there is related content, it will automatically be pulled up underneath the current note. This feature is also reserved for Premium users.

And rounding it all out is Announcements, which is a section that Evernote will use to push it own content for users. Among the announcements will be things like tips, updates, and popular tutorials. This feature is accessible via the Bugle icon. Aside from these big four, the rest of the changes are minor, pertaining to things like performance and stability.
