The Controversial Words Your iPhone Won't Autocorrect

Autocorrect can be a beautiful thing. It can also be a pain in the ass. Either way there’s apparently a "kill list" that Apple’s built-in iOS autocorrect function simply ignores, according to a Daily Beast report.

Clipper for iOS: Splice Together Mini-Movies in a Matter of Seconds

One of the great things about Vine and now Instagram, too, is the ability to stop filming and pick up right where you left off. It has the effect of producing more dynamic, interesting clips than you would otherwise. But that’s the problem—your’re stuck to clips. With Clipper, though, you can get that very same result without the time constraints.

IMDb updates Android and iOS apps, lets US users buy movie tickets directly

Uber intros fare splitting for cost-conscious ridesharers

Uber brings fare splitting to its mobile apps

Few party-goers look forward to the math involved with paying for a shared cab ride home. Now that Uber supports fare splitting, they won’t have to: the company’s updated Android and iOS apps let passengers divide the cost equally. While friends must be Uber members to chip in, they only have to give their permission if someone has already hailed a car. The new apps won’t necessarily get cheapskate friends to pay up, but they could avoid a few headaches at the end of a long night.

Another look at the green iPhone

If you’re aiming to see one of the supposed “budget” or “plastic” iPhones up close well before you see it in real life – and you like the color green – today is your lucky day. Straight from notorious leakster C Technology comes a set of photos that are neither blurry nor taken with a camera phone from ancient days. Here we’ve got what very much appear to be genuine articles, the iPhone Light (or whatever it’ll end up being called) in several pre-production images, all in electric green.

weiaaaaa

These images show the iPhone to be working with the rather eye-searing green we’ve seen several times before, this time showing up without any IMEI information on its back. This time the device only appears with the brand “iPhone” posted on its back in a font that could just as easily have been placed there by a knock-off artist.

What these images likely show is the rumored amalgamation of parts created by small-scale manufacturers in China to prepare case-makers for the eventual release of the genuine article. This iPhone likely sports the real color tone as well, preparing the case-makers for color matching as much as they do for case-fitting. Wouldn’t want to make a case that’s 2 Pantone numbers off, would we?

You’ll also see a set of plastic buttons and a switch, each of these set to live under the shell of this smartphone while the device operates out in the wild. We saw similar keys just a few days ago in each of the several-times-leaked colors: green, yellow, blue, and a red that’s almost pink. You’ll find these colors to be lining up quite well with current iPad and iPhone cases offered by Apple as well.

Have a peek at these newest images of the green iteration of the low-cost iPhone and let us know if you’re onboard with the idea that Apple isn’t aiming to cut costs, but to keep the screen size standard. And by all means, choose your color as well.

Apple WWDC 2013 developer session videos released in full [Updated]

Apple’s WWDC 2013 developer session videos have turned up on YouTube, giving an insider insight into what’s due in iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks later this year. The footage – nearly 100 videos including covering the changes in AirPrint, how best to make use of iAd, and how OS X push notifications will work – offers non-developers a glimpse of the goodies that registered iOS/OS X developers have had access to for some time.

wwdc_2013-580x396

As has been the case for some years now, tickets for WWDC 2013 sold out ridiculously quickly. In fact, it took less than two minutes for all of the spaces to go, despite them costing $1,599 apiece.

The lure is the opportunity to get early access to Apple’s upcoming platforms for mobile and desktop, as well as the chance to discuss them with the company’s own engineers. Apple holds multiple developer sessions over the course of the five day event.

What’s unclear is how the videos play into Apple’s WWDC NDA (non-disclosure agreement), which developers are expected to agree to. That’s intended to prevent features Apple hasn’t necessarily publicly talked about from leaking; it’s unclear who has uploaded these videos, and whether it was Apple itself.

If not, then the channel itself is likely to be shut down in short order. For a top-level view on OS X Mavericks, check out our preview.

Update: Apple has confirmed that the video uploads are not authorized by them, and that they will be removed shortly.

DekkoScan iOS App Brings Real World Objects to Minecraft: Why Build When You Can Scan?

We’ve seen a number of ways to transform objects made in Minecraft into physical items. But what if you want to the opposite? That’s the idea behind DekkoScan, an upcoming iOS app that uses your mobile device’s camera to scan physical objects and “cubify” them. Take this creepy inflatable owl for example:

dekkoscan minecraft ios app by portemantho

Now here it is terrorizing Minecraft:

dekkoscan minecraft ios app by portemantho 2

According to Dekko developer and Redditor portemantho, when the app is done scanning you just press its “Generate” button and it will “send a zip to your saves folder or to MCEdit.” But don’t embark on an epic quest to scan the Earth just yet. Portemantho admitted that because DekkoScan is resource-intensive, it’s scans are limited to a resolution of 128 x 128 and is more suited to scanning objects up close. Portemantho also said that the app currently uses wool blocks, but that can easily be changed with a future update. Here’s a very brief demo of the app:

As of this writing DekkoScan is still awaiting approval at the App Store. But again, the app is quite the resource hog and will only work on newer devices: iPad 2 & up, and iPhone 4S & 5. Portemantho said they will eventually release an Android port. Soon you’ll be able to build an object in Minecraft, 3D print that object, then use DekkoScan to take that 3D print back to Minecraft. Ad infinitum. Time well spent, life well lived.
