App Store gives away popular iOS games and apps, likely to mark its 5th anniversary

Popular iOS apps and games discounted on the App Store, likely to mark 5th anniversary

Here’s a little treat on a Monday morning. A number of premium iOS apps and games have been discounted to nothing over at the App Store, including the charming and mildly addictive Tiny Wings (and Tiny Wings HD for iPad), Traktor DJ (normally $20), Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP, as well as Infinity Blade II (usually $7). There’s no official promotion to explain or list all the discounts, so we’re left to guess that this could be a prelude to July 10th, when Apple will mark the fifth anniversary of the App Store. Cupertino has already started sending out promotional material to mark the occasion, listing the usual big statistics to show how far the App Store has come since 2008, so these freebies could well be a part of that. We’ve linked up a few of them after the break, but the list isn’t exhaustive so please add more in the Comments section if you spot any others that merit the storage space. Happy hunting!

Some Of The Best iPhone Games Ever Made Are Now Free

Instagram for iOS app updated with landscape mode and more

Instagram is wildly popular, but has notably lacked a few features that users have been asking for. Today, the company updated its app for iOS, adding a couple of those much-requested features, perhaps the best being the addition of landscape mode, allowing users to flip their smartphone in a horizontal orientation when desired.

The new support for landscape mode works for both recording videos and taking images, being more relevant to the former, the launch of which had produced a fair bit of criticism and issues related to the lack of horizontal orientation support. As The Next Web notes, this feature had originally been intended to launch with it, but there was a problem with the recorded videos not being flipped along with the changed orientation.

Beyond that, the second biggest change with this update is the Cinema stabilization feature being added for the front-facing camera, which we noted above. This feature aims to reduce the shakiness and wobbles that are so common with videos taken with a smartphone. As such, those who record videos of themselves the camera on the front of their phone will benefit from the feature.

The video feature for Instagram was announced on June 20 at a Facebook product event, among some other features. The feature allows for 15-seconds of video recording, and offers 15 filters that can be applied in the same way effects are added to photographs. The change log doesn’t specify what the other changes are, aside from “many other improvements and bug fixes.” As such, iOS users might notice some other niggling issues they’ve had being corrected after updating.

The app is available now for iOS users over at the App Store, weighing in at 14.5MB in size and being pegged at version 4.0.2. Users will need to be running iOS 5.0 or later. There’s no word on when Android users will also see the feature roll out, but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated!

Harmony Ultimate and Smart Hub review: Logitech outdoes itself with new remotes

Harmony Ultimate and Smart Hub review: Logitech outdoes itself with new remotes

Until now, Logitech’s Harmony line has been the name in programmable remotes. Now the company’s back with three follow-up products, and they differ enough from earlier models to warrant an explanation. Instead of using a programmable IR remote, the Harmony Ultimate, Harmony Smart Control and Harmony Ultimate Hub each offload the IR-emitting duties to a networked device, allowing smartphones and tablets to act as remotes too. Additionally, the Hub uses Bluetooth to control your game console. Ranging in price from $99 to $349, the lineup covers almost every budget, with the Hub sold as a standalone accessory for smartphones and tablets. Meanwhile, the Smart Control includes a simple remote, and the high-end Ultimate Hub swaps a basic remote for the Harmony Touch. How exactly might these enhance your home theater enjoyment? Read on to find out.

Kim Dotcom’s Mega launches Android app, vows iOS and Windows apps soon

Mega launches Android app

Kim Dotcom launched his Mega cloud storage platform with much fanfare, but few ways to use it. That’s finally improving now that the Mega Android app is here. The release won’t shock anyone who has used established rivals like Dropbox and Google Drive, but it is reasonably complete with two-way transfers, image previews and automatic camera syncing. It won’t be alone for long, either. Mega says that both iOS and Windows apps are in the last stages of testing, which could give us more of an incentive to try what’s still a very young service.

Limbo now available for iOS, terrifies gamers with its elegant simplicity

DMP Limbo leaps into iOS, terrifies users with its elegant simplicity

Starting today, Limbo, the 2D side-scrolling game that both charmed and terrified us on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, is available for iOS devices. Dino Patti, the CEO of indie developer Playdead, tweeted the announcement about the game’s launch with a link to the iTunes store, and from early reviews, the iOS port doesn’t disappoint. Limbo tells the story of a young boy searching for his sister in an eerie monochromatic landscape; the game’s restrained visuals and minimalistic sound effects are guaranteed to haunt you long after you stop playing. Both new gamers and fans who’ve come to love Limbo on their consoles can get their scares on the go — for the price of $4.99 — by heading over to the source link below.

Yahoo acquires Xobni, aims for smarter contacts in its services (updated)

Yahoo acquires Xobni, aims for smarter contacts in its services

Yahoo must be starting the summer with an acquisition spree: it bought Qwiki yesterday, and it’s buying Xobni today in a deal that AllThingsD estimates is worth $30 million to $40 million. The acquisition gives Yahoo a developer with experience in creating automatic, connected address books — a perfect fit for a web giant that has been revamping its email and social services. Neither of the new partners is talking about what they’ll create together, although Xobni is no longer accepting new customers for its paid services and has pulled downloads for both Smartr Contacts on Android and Xobni for BlackBerry. It’s a gentler transition than we’ve seen with other takeovers, although we wouldn’t get too comfy when most of Xobni’s services go dark after July 2nd of next year.

Update: Our colleagues at TechCrunch hear that the acquisition price may be over $60 million.
