Tim Cook says Jony Ive influence on iOS was “magic”

Speaking this week on how the next generation of devices running iOS will be working under the influence of Jony Ive, Tim Cook made it clear that the “magic” was “at the intersection” of hardware, software, and services. This response was in response to a line of questioning from Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the D11 conference this week, this in addition to chat about competition from Samsung and the influence of wearables on our near future. Mossberg asked if this, this being the next iOS, “is what Jony Ive has been working on?”

Cook responded with a simple “yes” before continuing on with mentions of ramping up innovation in the face of this Post-PC era we’re all a part of. Though Cook was not about to speak about specifics in the move of Scott Forstall that ended with Ive taking a different role, he was ready and willing to suggest that the new arrangement was top notch.

“Yes. What we did last fall was change things up — to really ramp up our innovation. The key in the post-PC era for having a great product is incredible hardware, incredible software, and incredible services, and to combine them so you can’t tell what’s what. The magic is at the intersection.” – Tim Cook

Cook continued by noting that their current arrangement was and is ready to “amp it up.” Noting how Jony “contributed significantly to the look and feel of Apple over many years,” Cook said the team at Apple knew “he could do that for our software as well.”

This will become apparent – more than likely – at Apple’s yearly developers conference taking place next month. That’s WWDC 2013, with a keynote starting things off on June 10th – SlashGear will be there, of course, and you’ll want to tune in without a doubt.

Tim Cook suggests Google Glass “broad appeal is hard to see”

This week in an interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook had a bit to say about Google’s wearable product: Glass. Having been asked what his take was on wearables by Swisher, Cook responded: “I think wearables [are] incredibly interesting. It could be a profound area.” His reply on Google Glass specifically wasn’t quite so optimistic.

According to Cook, “there are some positives in the product.” Responding to a query on Google Glass, Cook continued,”It’s probably likely to appeal to certain vertical markets, [but] the likelihood that it has broad appeal is hard to see.” Mossberg continued the line of questioning by asking “is wearables a thing? Is part of the post-PC era wearables that go beyond fitness devices?”

“There are lots of gadgets in the space. I would say that the ones that are doing more than one thing, there’s nothing great out there that I’ve seen. Nothing that’s going to convince a kid that’s never worn glasses or a band or a watch or whatever to wear one. At least I haven’t seen it. So there’s lots of things to solve in this space.” – Tim Cook

Cook added that this area was “ripe for exploration,” and “ripe for us to get excited about,” noting that “lots of companies” will be joining in. Pushed by Swisher to say whether or not Apple bill be one of them, Cook made it clear, “I don’t want to answer that one.”

On the subject of wearables, Cook continued by noting how his glasses – non-smart though they were – were not something he’d wear if he didn’t have to. “I think from a mainstream point of view, glasses are risky.” It was clear that Cook’s interest in wearables wasn’t about to be tied directly to Apple products that hadn’t been announced yet, but that the company wouldn’t be left out of the movement.

Tim Cook talks about ‘the future of iOS / OS X’ Ive, Cue have been working on

Tim Cook talks about 'the future of iOS OS X' Ive, Cue have been working on

During an interview tonight at the D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a few references to what we can expect at his company’s WWDC 2013 event in a few weeks. As expected, he mentioned we’ll see the future of iOS and OS X revealed there, and directly referenced the recent management shakeup. Craig Federighi is running both teams, and Cook mentioned designer Jony Ive has been “really key” to this version of iOS. He left it up to interviewer Kara Swisher to decide if the changes made are as dramatic as have been reported, stating only that collaboration has been enhanced, with an “amped up” intersection of hardware, software and services.

Another name dropped is that of Eddy Cue, who is busy heading up work on services since Scott Forstall’s departure. We’ll have to wait until WWDC to find out the fruits of the various executives’ labor but Cook did leave us with this to chew on: “The whole concept was to tighten the groups even more, so we could spend more time finding magic in intersections. Seven months later, give or take, I think it has been an incredibly great change.”

Google+ iOS app update brings new Photos experience

The Google+ app was updated for Android users a short while back and as of today, it looks like that same update has arrived for iOS users. The update is already available and those looking to update will be grabbing version 4.4.0. Perhaps more important though, this is the update that brings the new Photos experience with features to include Auto Enhance.

Photo-10001

Google is touting this update as being one that will allow you to keep your photos organized and also looking best. One of those looking best related features is the previously mentioned Auto Enhance. This makes instant adjustments to include the brightness and saturation. In our testing, the Auto Enhance seems to be working nicely, however for those worried, Google does allow you to choose between the original and the edited image. One bit worth mentioning, the Auto Enhance (and the Auto Awesome) feature is turned on by default.

This update also brings support for the related hashtags, which were originally mentioned during the Google I/O keynote. This is basically nothing more than how Google now automatically includes some hashtags on your posts. While your posts will be tagged automatically, these will also help you when browsing for content. Otherwise, a few other items you will see include the ability to edit some additional profile fields and also upload a cover photo.

Photo-40000

Once you have updated Google+ you will begin seeing Google Offer posts in your stream and you will also be able to adjust how often the What’s Hot posts appear in your stream. Some additional (and smaller) changes include the ability to use strikethrough text, copy the post permalink and also edit comments.

The final change here deals with Hangouts. We suspect plenty of iOS users may have already installed the Hangouts app, however if you have yet to do that, clicking the Hangouts link in the Google+ app menu will instruct you to do so. Basically, despite the link being in the menu, these are still two different apps. Of course, once Hangouts is installed a click of that link will simply launch the app.

Google+ update for iOS adds photo enhancements, standalone Hangouts app

Google update for iOS focus on photo enhancements, organization

An update for Google+ has just begin rolling out to iOS users, bringing with it a host of image-centric improvements. The version bump grants iPhone and iPad users of Google’s social network more control over the quality of photos in their stream with an Auto Backup, Highlight, Awesome and Enhance features, as well as the ability to sort, search and share those pics. The app also ushers in a redirect for Hangouts that takes users to the standalone app, Google’s all inclusive messaging client recently introduced at I/O, plus greater editing oversight for profiles and comments — including support for strikethroughs. It’s live now, so go ahead and grab it at the source.

iPhone takes HD moon photos with custom telescope setup

With a custom-made setup connecting an app, the iPhone, and a telescope together to take photos of space, one photographer has shown some surprisingly high-quality pics this week of our own moon. Jared Earle’s custom build included the iPhone 4S, a 5-inch lens-toting Celestron spotter scope, a Magnifi accessory, and the app Cortex Camera. With these simple components, surprising results have appeared.

The photo of the moon you’re seeing here comes from Earle’s Flickr account, and was indeed taken with an iPhone 4S. Cortex Camera is used to take a series of photos that, in the end, create one massive high-quality and, as they say, “noise free” composite image.

Though no tripod is necessary when using this app outside of this setup, it’s important that the telescope is not sitting free on its own – don’t want to drop it, after all. The Magnifi accessory is one that allows the user to mount their iPhone to any of a collection of instruments. Telescopes can be attached at the eye, as can microscopes, binoculars, and other oddities.

Earle decided to work with Cortex Camera to make up for the eyepiece he had on hand. Using electrical tape around the 24mm eyepiece allowed the Magnifi accessory to fit properly, while using Cortex Camera allowed the iPhone’s sensor to be fully utilized.

While it’s suggested that the photographer get a remote shutter of some sort or another for the iPhone – and there are many, many of them out there, mind you – Earle made the process work without. Testing this setup – or one similar to it – should be done during the day to assure one’s self of being able to execute a great one-off photo. Once night comes, you’ll want to take said photos in the dark!

IDC: tablets to overtake portable PCs by end of 2013

According to the IDC (International Data Corporation)’s latest report on their Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, tablet computers are projected to overtake the mobile PC market by the end of this year. And more than that, the IDC suggests that tablet sales will grow past those of the entire PC market by the year 2015. If you’re a keyboard lover, this might be good news for you – cheap computers on the horizon!

jetstreampilewtmk-580x387

Of course if you’re in the market for the highest-end PCs there are to grab, there may be a shrinking market that results in a desperate set of manufacturers. This could go several ways, one of which is cheaply constructed machines sold at tablet-level prices.

“Tablets surpassing portables in 2013, and total PCs in 2015, marks a significant change in consumer attitudes about compute devices and the applications and ecosystems that power them. IDC continues to believe that PCs will have an important role in this new era of computing, especially among business users.

But for many consumers, a tablet is a simple and elegant solution for core use cases that were previously addressed by the PC.” – Ryan Reith, Program Manager for IDC’s Mobility Trackers

icd_small

According to the IDC, this quarter’s continued shift toward smaller screen sizes on tablets is a sign that the entire market is becoming more affordable. While back in 2011 it was the 8 – 11-inch tablet market that was dominating at 73%, tablets smaller than 8-inches are now creeping up at 55% of the total.

The IDC predicts that by 2017, tablets smaller than 8-inches will make up 57% of the market while tablets larger than 11-inches will be at 6%. That’s a tiny sum compared even to the still-large 37% of tablets at 8 – 11-inches, but there it is: the spread continues.

screensize

Results from the IDC note that tablet shipments are expected to grow 58.7% year-over-year in 2013, this number reaching 229.3 million units across the planet. This amount of unit sales is up from 144.5 million units sold through the entirety of 2012.

The Worldwide Average Selling Price (ASP) for tablets is expected by the IDC to decline this year to $381, that’s 10.8% below the ASP from 2012. The current ASP for a PC (that’s any PC, not just laptops, mind you) is $635.

Sound about right to you? How can the manufacturers sticking with PC form factors hope to compete against the tablet tides? Are you planning on sticking with your desktop or notebook computer, or does the tablet universe call to you?

Blockbuster 2.0 for iOS arrives, manages the disc rentals we no longer use

Blockbuster 20 for iOS manages all but the streaming you really want

Blockbuster started the month by launching an On Demand app for iOS and embracing the streaming video era. For the end of the month, it’s going retro: following a quiet App Store launch earlier in May, the company has formally announced a free Blockbuster 2.0 iOS app that covers everything but streaming. The release is built almost exclusively for traditionalists, letting them manage their Blockbuster By Mail rental queues, scan membership cards and check the stock at those stores that remain open. About the only concessions to modernity are the built-in movie trailers. While the app does give some needed love to disc-based viewers, it’s an acute reminder that much of Blockbuster’s original audience has moved on.
