Hasbro Lazer Tag hands-on (video)

Hasbro Lazer Tag handson video

The NERF has been dropped, but Hasbro’s Lazer Tag system is still the same awesome toy we got a taste of in February. The difference is, now they’re retail ready. Individual blasters, complete with iDevice dock, will hit shelves in just over a week, while packages of two are scheduled for October 1st. The companion iOS app is already available through iTunes, but a rep from Hasbro still describes it as being in beta form (an update is on its way that will remove that tag and simplify the initial set-up). The same rep was also nice enough to swing by the Engadget compound and deliver us a pile of blasters to test ourselves, which we immediately took out for a test run in Washington Square Park. Head on past the break for some impressions and a taste of our “Lazer” battle royale.

PSA: Google’s 3D City View and Tour Guide arrives for Google Earth on iOS today

PSA Googles 3D City View and Tour Guide arrives for Google Earth on iOS today

Google’s 3D City View is now available on iOS. The Google Earth update adds three-dimensional imagery to major locations including Washington D.C, San Francisco and Boston. It’s arriving alongside Tour Guide; select a notable attraction to go straight to it, with accompanying trivia you can bore your friends with later. Sadly 3D maps requires the processing hardware of the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or the third-generation iPad, but other iOS (4.2 or higher) device users can still get access to Tour Guide. Unsurprisingly, the update’s available via the App Store — but you shouldn’t need a map to find your way there.

Sony broadcasts three-chip PMW-200 XDCAM with Android or iOS remote control app

Sony outs threechip PMW200 XDCAM with Android or iOS remote control

If you’re the reporter and camera operator for K-STIX, Sony’s got good news: they just unveiled the PMW-200 XDCAM, and you can control it with your smartphone. The camcorder features a broadcast-friendly 50Mbps data rate drawing from three half-inch CMOS sensors — bigger than any other broadcast handheld cam, according to Sony — though that size is still a far cry from its own super-35 filmmaking cams and others on the market. The Japanese company claims the chips provide “exceptional” low-light powers, and other features include 30fps at 1080P or 60fps at 720P, a 14x zoom lens, 3.5-inch 852 x 480 LCD display and a 15 second pre-record cache. The camera will be available by September, but the aforementioned WiFi adapter for Android or iOS remote control won’t fly in until the end of the year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but if you need an easier way to multitask or the approving nod from that rigid broadcaster, check the PR for all the specs.

Path 2.5 adds larger photos, movie sharing, and nudging

The private social network app, Path, has seen an update to version 2.5 for iOS and Android that adds some new functionality. Photos have seen a big improvement in the app, now spanning the full width of the phone’s screen as users scroll through their timeline. Instagram-esque filters can now be applied to photos as they’re taken, and a quick single tap will begin recording video so that you don’t miss out on any action. Users can also take a photo using the volume button on the iPhone, just like in the regular Camera app.

Path has also added the ability to search for movies and books within the app. Previously the service pulled down information about what music you were listening to, and now users can manually search for whatever movie they’re watching or the next book they’ve been eyeing, further adding to the Path mantra of seeing what your friends are experiencing. The biggest feature, however, is the ability to “nudge” your friends. When a friend on Path hasn’t posted to the service for some time, their name will turn grey, and a question mark will appear that will allow you to nudge them into activity.

Inviting users to the service has also been improved. Now, invitations can be customized with a note, photo, and even a voice recording that will prompt friends and family to sign up. Finally, the initial sign up process has been streamlined, with an added tour that guides the user around the various features of the app. Path 2.5 is available for iOS and Android right now, so head on over to the respective app stores to update or give it a whirl for the first time.

Former Apple software engineers reportedly working on a faster Facebook app for iOS

Let’s face it, Facebook’s mobile apps aren’t exactly the most stable we’ve seen and based on the various user comments left on the iTunes App Store and the Google Play store, there have been a lot of calls to “fix” it.  That being said, according to sources who revealed to Bloomberg, four former Apple software engineers have been hired and are working on speed and performance enhancements for the iOS version of the Facebook app. The update is expected to roll out in the next couple of months, and that a complete overhaul of the app is in the works and will most likely see a 2013 release. Since there has been no official word from Facebook yet, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt. Either way we will be keeping our eyes peeled for this supposedly improved, faster app, so be sure to check back with us at a later date for more info!
