Amazon’s New Ad Pokes Fun At The iPad Air

Lately Microsoft has been making the news by poking fun at both Samsung and Apple products, but it looks like it’s Amazon’s turn to have some fun and the company has recently released an ad which pokes fun at Apple’s iPad Air, although in this case they made use of an actor with a British accent which we can only assume is mocking Apple’s Jony Ive, the designer of the iPad Air amongst other Apple products. As expected the ad pits the iPad Air against Amazon’s own tablet offering, the latest Kindle Fire HDX which was announced a couple of months back.

The ad boasts that the Kindle Fire HDX weighs 20% less than the iPad Air, features more pixels in its display, and not to mention its lower cost which is at $379 for the 16GB model, while Apple’s own offering is set at $499. Those are some valid points, to be honest, but once again we are comparing different smartphone platforms and ecosystems, so apart from just hardware specs, there are other factors the customers have to consider when buying into a platform. In any case if you have a minute to spare, you can check out Amazon’s attempt at mocking the iPad Air and Jony Ive in the video above.

Microsoft Releases New Surface 2 Ad Targeting The iPad Air

Microsoft seems to be on a roll these days when it comes to poking fun at their competition. Earlier we saw how Microsoft’s Scroogled campaign dismissed the Google Chromebook as a proper laptop, and now we are seeing how Microsoft is taking yet another shot at Apple’s iPads, comparing the company’s own Surface 2 tablet against it. We suppose it’s become common knowledge that the iPad does not sport the same hardware features as the Surface 2, namely how it does not come with USB ports, nor is there an option to purchase a cover with a keyboard attached to it (you’d have to go for third party options), and also how there is no HDMI output on the iPad either.

These are pretty much the points that Microsoft is trying to make against the iPad Air and to be fair, these are valid arguments. However at the end of the day it really boils down to a variety of factors, such as pricing, availability of apps, ecosystem, overall feel, and etc. In any case this attempt by Microsoft follows hot on the heels of Nokia’s own ad where it compares the company’s recently release Lumia 2520 tablet against the iPad Air as well.

Engadget Giveaway: win an iPad Air courtesy of hopTo!

Engadget Giveaway: win an iPad Air courtesy of hopTo!

HopTo has been hard at work solving what it feels are the three basic productivity problems while working on an iPad: file storage, interoperability and multitasking. Of course, not everyone has a tablet to begin with, so hopTo has risen to the occasion in order to solve a fourth by hooking up one lucky Engadget reader with a brand new iPad Air. The free app just landed in the App store this month and it’s worth a look, offering convenient access to cloud storage providers, Microsoft Office file editing and even remote access to your computer, all straight from your slate. Having an iPad Air with all that on board could definitely help take some weight off your shoulders in more ways than one. So it seems the only problem left to solve is whether to enter one time or maybe four (down at the Rafflecopter widget below). Do ya feel lucky? Well do ya?

Nokia Lumia 2520 UK Ad Takes A Swing At The iPad Air

We have seen Nokia consistently take shots at the competition through a variety of mediums. It mocked Apple’s choice of colors for the iPhone 5c by tweeting a picture of its Lumia smartphones with the caption “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” Only recently it took a shot at BlackBerry through Twitter as well. The latest target is the iPad Air, a tablet that the Nokia Lumia 2520 is going up against. The tablet’s UK highlights its several features at the expense of the new Apple iPad.

A guy in the ad walks into a coffee shop to show off his iPad Air to his friends, the voice over announces that the tablet is thinner than a pencil, an obvious reference to the iPad Air ads that Apple has been running. The guy is then shown having difficulties trying to get his work done on the tablet, so he whips out his laptop. When he starts using the iPad Air again, the battery dies. That’s when he notices another person in the coffee shop with a Nokia Lumia 2520 hooked up with a Power Keyboard, which offers an additional five hours of battery life as it has an 8,000mAh battery tucked inside. So as the guy wonders if he bought the wrong tablet, you’ll probably be a little bit curious about Nokia’s new tablet as well. Do check out the ad posted above, and head to our review of the Nokia Lumia 2520 if it captures your attention.

iPad Air Fails To Survive Drop Test

Apple’s iPad Air is the Cupertino company’s latest tablet offering and not only is the device thinner and lighter, but it is smaller at the same time, but what does this mean in terms of durability? In the past we have seen Richard Ryan put products to the “test” by performing drop tests and firing guns at them on his YouTube channel, RatedRR, but in the case of the iPad Air, well sadly it didn’t exactly survive to the shooting part of the idea because when attempting to drop the iPad Air from a height of a few feet, the screen managed to shatter, and to top it all off, this was dropped on relatively soft dirt as opposed to a hard concrete floor.

We’re not sure what Apple might have compromised in terms of durability when it came to the iPad Air, but safe to say if you think you might drop the tablet, you might want to invest in some heavy duty protection, or maybe even consider another tablet if you think the iPad Air is a bit too expensive to drop or repair. We have to conduct our testing but in the meantime what do you guys think? Any iPad Air owners out there who feel that Apple might have compromised on durability, such as thicker materials, in favor of making the tablet both thinner and lighter at the same time?
