Fly Or Die: iPad Air

ipad-air-case-stand

With the new iPad Air, the question isn’t whether or not the new tablet will fly or die. The question, rather, is whether or not you should upgrade from an older-gen iPad to the iPad air or to the iPad mini?

In truth, it all comes down to use cases.

There’s no doubt that the new iPad air is the most powerful, speedy, and beautiful iPad to date. It’s almost half a pound lighter than previous generations, with a 64-bit A7 processor and a brand new iPad mini-esque design. The bezels are 43 percent thinner than earlier generations making the full size iPad a one-handed device for the first time ever.

That said, the iPad air won’t always fit in your purse or pocket the way an iPad mini will, which is why (again) it comes down to use cases.

For John, an iPad is a must-have gadget at all times.

He takes an iPad mini everywhere, with an LTE connection, and uses it the same way most people use their smartphone. Not only is he reading, watching movies, and playing with apps, but he’s doing on-the-go email and web searches with his tablet. If this sounds like you, the iPad Air might still be a bit big for your tastes.

However, I use my iPad as more of an at-home or travel device. It comes on the plane, and I watch movies and read. I surf the web or read in bed, and play games from time to time. Because of this, the iPad Air is light and easy to carry around but still offers quite a bit of screen real estate.

iPad Air explodes, faulty overcharge protection circuit suspected

An iPad Air spontaneously combusted this week in a Vodafon store in Canberra, Australia, filling the store with smoke and sending a continuous stream of sparks flying from the charging port of the device. The store was evacuated, the fire brigade was called, and the spectacular flaming tablet was officially extinguished. No one was injured […]

    Review: Apple iPad Air

    Review: Apple iPad Air

The iPad Air features an impressively slender form factor and, thanks largely to its A7 processor and optimizations in iOS 7, it still manages to perform twice as fast and deliver just as much battery life as its predecessor.

Kensington hopes to increase iPad Air productivity with new KeyFolio keyboard cases

keyboard-cover-kensingtonAny purchase of a modern day smartphone or tablet would be incomplete if it does not come with the relevant kind of accessories to go along with it. The recently announced iPad Air would be a good example, and this might be the very reason that the folks over at Kensington has decided to do something about the situation. As a result, they have come up with a quartet of new iPad keyboard cases for the iPad Air, where each one of them will offer a superior keyboard experience that is touted to match a desktop keyboard when it comes to for comfort, accuracy, responsiveness, and convenience, while you are on the go, of course. The four keyboard cases would be the Kensington KeyFolio Pro, the Kensington KeyFolio Executive, the Kensington KeyCover Hard Case, and the Kensington KeyFolio Exact.

Regardless of which model you choose, they will all arrive with half a dozen rows of island keys, where each of them will feature a dedicated space to increase the level of typing accuracy. Not only that, all KeyFolios will come with its own unique set of thoughtful touches. For instace, some of the keyboards will arrive with a trio of magnetic positioning wells for viewing-angle adjustments, while others will feature a stylish zipper closure option. There will also be a full suite of iOS shortcut keys, where among them include cut/paste, Siri and a couple of usable shift keys, making it perfect to avoid unnecessary finger acrobatics, especially when it comes to left-handers.

Of course, it goes without saying that once you have one of these Kensington KeyFolio iPad keyboard cases, your iPad Air would gain additional protection against unwanted scratches and nicks without having to add any unnecessary bulk. The battery life itself is quite phenomenal – we are talking about 960 hours of working time and 180 days of standby time, nowhow about that? Not only that, each new Kensington KeyFolio purchase would arrive with up to 65GB of free Google Drive storage for one year that is worth $42. The Kensington KeyFolio Pro, Kensington KeyFolio Executive, Kensington KeyCover Hard Case, and Kensington KeyFolio Exact will retail for $99.99, $119.99, $79.99, and $129.99, respectively.

Apple Issues Shutdown Notice To Website That Helps Find Apple Products

When Apple launches a new product, we know how difficult it can be to head on over to an Apple Store or other retailer to simply pick up whatever it is Apple has released. We know you’ve been told “we’re sold out,” and “we’re expecting a new shipment later this week,” one too many times. Today, Apple is making it harder to find their products in a store near you as they have issued a DMCA takedown notice for Apple tracking website Apple-tracker.com.

iPad Air Estimated To Cost $42 Less To Make Than Third-Gen iPad

iPad Air Estimated To Cost $42 Less To Make Than Third Gen iPadThe iPad Air costs $499 for the basic 16GB model with WiFi-only, which we guess is pretty much the standard price that Apple has been charging for its iPads over the past few years, but the question is how much does it cost Apple to actually make a single iPad Air? Obviously it does not cost as much as it sells and according to a report released by IHS Suppli, they have estimated (based on a visual teardown of the tablet) that the iPad Air costs anywhere between $274 to $361, depending on which mode you go for.

More interesting is the fact that the iPad Air’s base model actually costs $42 less than the entry-level third-generation iPad from last year! This is in spite of the fact that the iPad Air uses newer components to not only make the tablet lighter, but thinner at the same time. The costs only take into account the costs of the components themselves, and does not factor in additional costs associated with the tablet, such as R&D, marketing, manufacturing, software, patent licenses, and more. What do you guys think? How is it that Apple has managed to get the newer iPad Air to cost less than its predecessor?

T-Mobile Claims They Sold More iPad Airs At Launch Compared To Tablets Sold In Q3

T Mobile Claims They Sold More iPad Airs At Launch Compared To Tablets Sold In Q3While other carriers have offered Apple’s iPad on contract in the past, T-Mobile was the exception, at least until the 1st of November which is when Apple’s iPad Air was made available not just via Apple stores, but also via T-Mobile as well. So with reports of the iPad Air being rather popular, was it a smart decision by T-Mobile to offer the tablet and hop on board the iPad bandwagon as well? Turns out that it is, according to T-Mobile who recently claimed that they have managed to sell more iPad Air tablets during the launch of the device compared to all of Q3, which is definitely saying something!

Granted T-Mobile’s focus is not necessarily purely on tablets, it is still pretty impressive nonetheless. Unfortunately T-Mobile declined to provide any numbers regarding their sales, but we guess it’s still good to know that the tablet is doing well. AT&T has also made somewhat similar claims regarding the iPad Air, claiming that they have seen a 200% increase in iPad activations compared to last year, with the iPad Air presumably to thank for that. With the continued popularity of the iPad Air, we are definitely curious to see what sort of numbers Apple will release in the near future regarding tablets sold.

iPad Air Review: Bigger Gets So Much Better

iPad Air Review: Bigger Gets So Much Better

It’s hard to imagine that it’s been only three years since the original iPad came out, since tablets were a part of our daily world. Sure there were tablet computers before, but there weren’t tablets the way we know and use them today. And while the iPad changed personal computing forever, it has remained mostly unchanged—especially on the outside. That is, until now.
