Apple’s iPad mini with Retina display is here, the second half of the Cupertino company’s two-hit tablet refresh for 2013. Keeping the slender design and tactile metal chassis of before, but updating it with all-new internal hardware and a beautiful Retina display, the second-gen iPad mini arguably smooths away all of the few wrinkles reviewers […]
iPad Mini With Retina’s Benchmarks Prove Its Almost As Fast As The iPhone 5s
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhile we knew that Apple’s new iPad mini with Retina display would see a release in November, a specific release date was never mentioned, but the wait is over as you might recall that yesterday, the highly-anticipated tablet finally went up for sale. In any case we’re sure many are wondering just how well the iPad mini with Retina display performs. With the iPad Air, Apple introduced the A7X chipset, but with the iPad mini, they decided to reuse the A7 chip which can also be found inside the new iPhone 5s. Now thanks to new benchmarks, we can find out just how well the iPad mini performs.
According to a test performed on GeekBench, it was found that the iPad mini with Retina display was clocked at 1.29GHz, marginally shy of the 1.3GHz on the iPhone 5s, but noticeably less than the iPad Air’s 1.39GHz. However unless you’re running apps that require every last drop of processing power, chances are you might not even be able to tell the difference. Hardware specs also don’t necessarily translate into a better product, as you will note in our Tegra Note 7 review where despite the tablet not featuring the best of the best hardware, proved to be a tablet more than capable of holding its own.

Supposing you’re aiming to purchase a Retina iPad mini and you don’t want to wait for it to be shipped to your home this week after digital sales started this morning. Did you know that you’ve got the option to head to an Apple store to pick the device up? The only kink in this […]
Back in October, Apple announced the iPad mini with Retina display and last we checked, it seemed that the Apple Store had gone offline, leaving many to assume that the Cupertino company was preparing their online store for the launch of the iPad mini with Retina display. Turns out they were right and just like Apple promised, the tablet has been made available in November and is now available for purchase via the Apple Store.
The tablet will be available in Space Gray or Silver, with the WiFi only model costing $399 for the base model that comes with 16GB of onboard storage, and for those looking for more storage, the 128GB model will set you back $699. However if you want more than just WiFi and would love LTE connectivity, the 16GB WiFi + LTE model will set you back $529, while the 128GB (the largest option) will retail for a whopping $829.
As it stands the 16GB and 32GB WiFi only models have a shipping estimate of 1-3 days, while all other models are still at 5-10 business days. We’re not sure if this has anything to do with the LCD burn-in problems that Apple has been rumored to be experiencing, but either way the larger models and the LTE variants will require you to wait a tad longer.

The delay in Retina iPad mini’s release has long been attributed to poor yield rates of the Retina display panels, but a new report coming out of Korea suggests that there’s actually a problem affecting an unknown number of panels Sharp has manufactured that are behind this delay. While Sharp isn’t the primary manufacturer of display panels for the Retina iPad mini, it is believed to manufacture as many as 40 percent of all panels. ETNews claims that the LCD burn-in issue in these display panels is related to the IGZO technology Sharp is using, and while the glitch might not be visible to the naked eye, it reportedly does not meet Apple’s standards so the company can’t proceed with production using the flawed panels.
The report cites an “industry guru” who claims that if Apple doesn’t go ahead with these panels, and it changes suppliers, it would have to delay the launch of the Retina iPad mini. That would presumably mean that the new iPad mini won’t be coming in November. Apple has only said that it intends to release the tablet later this month, it is yet to provide a concrete release date. On the other hand, it has also been rumored to be in talks with Samsung for production of Retina display panels. This particular report reiterates that, adding that the Korean manufacturer might start making panels for Apple early next year.
