Reuters sources predict shortage for unannounced iPad mini with Retina display
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s little more than a rumor at this point, but stories of delays and shortages have been circulating for about as long as mentions of an iPad mini with Retina display. Reuters spent the morning adding a bit more fuel to that proverbial fire with its own band of anonymous sources. The “people who work in the company’s supply chain” confirmed that there have been issues bringing a higher res tablet to market — issues that may, in fact, impede Cupertino’s ability to capitalize on the ever-important holiday push.
The refreshed mini is still apparently set for an October release according to the aforementioned unnamed informants, but it “could be available in only limited quantities this year.” As to what’s actually causing said shortage, no can say for sure, though word is that Apple’s own certification process around power consumption may have thrown a wrench in the proceedings.

It was reported the other day that Delta Airlines had decided to equip about 11,000 of their pilots with Microsoft Surface 2 tablets. It was an interesting move given that the Surface 2 tablets were only recently announced, not to mention its predecessor wasn’t exactly a hit. As it turns out, according to a pilot who spoke to Apple Insider, the pilots of Delta Airlines actually fought hard to get the company to equip them with Apple’s iPad tablets rather than Microsoft’s Surface 2 tablets. The pilot alleges that Microsoft and Delta had some kind of deal involving money and travel contracts, which was why the airline company had gone with Surface 2 tablets rather than the more popular iPad.
The tablets were purchased to replace flight bags, which are bags filled with manuals that add a lot of weight and bulk to the plane, and the tablets are meant to provide a digital solution in a smaller and lighter form factor. This is not to say that the Microsoft Surface 2 tablet is bad or horrible to use, but rather it does not have the same track record as Apple’s iPad, but who knows, perhaps the pilots will eventually learn to love Microsoft’s latest product.

Rumors have been swirling which suggest that Apple is readying a new iPad mini with Retina display
After developing an augmented reality car manual for the Audi A3 and similar software for wearables like Glass, Metaio certainly knows a thing or two about the AR space. It’s no surprise then, that Volkswagen has collaborated with Metaio to develop an augmented reality iPad app for the 2014 XL1 hybrid diesel that debuted earlier this year. Called MARTA (Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance), the app uses the iPad’s camera to view the internals of the vehicle and label the various parts and elements so that VW service workers will know what they’re working on.
MARTA also shows step-by-step instructions on how to repair and replace certain components, right down to which direction mechanics should be facing. You can even use the app to test out different design elements like a new hood or a different color. And just in case all that AR doesn’t prove to be useful, the app provides a good ol’ fashioned text service manual as well. Seeing as the MARTA is an AR app for a very limited edition vehicle, we don’t expect it to be of much use outside of certain VW specialty shops. Still, it’s yet another sign that incorporating augmented reality into digital car manuals just makes sense.

Dropping an iPad onto a dock is not only an easy way to keep its battery charged, it also props it up so it’s not laying sprawled across your desk wasting valuable real estate. And where as most docks can only accommodate an iPad going au naturel, Belkin’s new Express Dock features a dial ’round back so the Lightning connector can be adjusted, ensuring it makes a connection even if your tablet is sporting a snazzy case.
Paper making a Book? That would follow logic. But the Paper we’re referring to here is actually an iPad sketchbook app and the book? Why, that’d be a product of Moleskine. An update released today to Paper’s popular app adds a new ‘Make a Book’ service which allows users to self-publish their collection of doodles and designs into physical books. The end result is 15 matte pages of custom quirk in a 4:3 aspect ratio (to match the iPad) — users can even design their own covers. But this kitschy road to self-publishing comes at a steep cost: $40 per Book. Sure, there are other, cheaper means of getting your work out into the world, but not all of them’ll do it with a fold-out flair.
