Microsoft launches Office for iPad
Posted in: Today's ChiliMicrosoft announced on Thursday the much anticipated release of Office for the iPad. Satya Nadella, who took over as Microsoft CEO just last month, announced that the app would be available on iPads by 11 AM PST on Thursday the 27th.
Microsoft released Office for the iPhone back in June of last year, but surprisingly had not yet released a version specifically formatted for the iPad until now. Office for the iPad is free to install and view Office documents, but to do anything more than that you will need to buy an Office 365 subscription for $99.99 annually.
The Office app includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint with a familiar ribbon interface, similar to the desktop version of the application. Buttons are slightly larger to support swiping instead of clicking to also try to integrate into the familiar usability of the iPad touch interface.

Just yesterday Office for iPad was officially launched. However it seems that barely less than 24 hours of its launch, a bug for the app has since been spotted. Basically for users who rely on the SharePoint 2010, you guys can expect to run into a little obstacle. This is apparently because the collaborative editing platform relies on ActiveX controls to access documents.
However because Apple’s iOS devices have moved away from the need to use plug-ins like ActiveX, Flash, Silverlight, and etc., it has created a problem for users looking to share and collaborate on documents together. In fact this was a point of contention during iOS’ early days where competitors would proudly boast Flash capabilities, although we all know how that turned out. (more…)

Now that there’s a version of the Microsoft Office suite available for the iPad, it’s a decent time to make sure your tablet’s case looks like it means business. From the makers of the much-loved Cord Tacos, This Is Ground’s Cargito iPad cases combine simple design with hidden treats. They’re loaded with mobile charging options and compartments for sidecar necessities.
The Cargito Air Charging iPad Case comes with a 7000 mAh battery in a zip-up compartment and an integrated Lightning cable that lets you give your iPad a full recharge in transit while it’s tucked inside the full-leather sleeve. There’s also a smaller and cheaper version — the Cargito Mini Charging iPad Case — made for the iPad Mini.
Both sizes include a strap that’s fitted to hold a Pencil stylus, a compartment for your business and/or credit cards, and a zip-up pocket. In the charger-equipped versions of each case, the rechargeable battery goes in that zip pocket; there are also non-charging versions of each sized case that free up that zip compartment for spare change, hard candy, or a pocketable amount of what-have-you.
These high-end cases come with some high-end price tags. The Cargito Air Charging case costs $165, and the Cargito Mini Charging case goes for $155. If you want to supply your own battery pack, you can save a little bit: $109 for the larger non-charging version, and $99 for the non-charging Mini version.
Color options abound. Each case size comes in eight colors, including various shades of brown, black, white, and gold.
One of the great features of the Microsoft Touch and Type covers for their Surface tablets is that they’re pretty thin and don’t really add much weight or bulk to the entire tablet. In fact the Touch covers are just a little bit thicker compared to Apple’s own Smart Covers, so imagine if Apple were to introduce such a product to their lineup, wouldn’t that be a good idea?
Well perhaps Apple will or maybe they won’t, but at the very least thanks to an Apple patent, it seems that the Cupertino company has at one point or the other explored the possibility. As you can see in the diagram above, it shows off a keyboard-like attachment designed for the iPad in mind, or rather a tablet to be exact. (more…)

As it had been announced a few hours ago, Office for iPad is now official. Apple’s CEO Tim Cook appears to be pretty pleased by the launch and went as far as congratulating Microsoft and its CEO, Satya Nadella, on the app’s launch on his Twitter account.
So why is Tim Cook happy about the launch? Well as it turns out it seems that this is because Apple will be taking a 30% cut from Office 365 subscriptions that have been purchased on the iPad, as per usual with regards to in-app purchases. (more…)

We guess it’s safe to say that the wait is finally over regarding Office for iPad. After all it was as far back as 2011 that we started hearing rumors that a version of Office for the iPad was in the works, meaning that it took Microsoft about 3 years before it was trotted out to the public.
So why did it take Microsoft so long? According to Microsoft’s newly-minted CEO, Satya Nadella, “The thing we wanted to get most right was the combination of what I would call the combination of the app, the enterprise architecture, the developer APIs, and then marry it with the device and what you expect from the device. … It’s not just a trivial thing, let’s port Word for Windows to a particular device.” (more…)
