Sometimes a well-selected GIF adds a little extra oomph to a story that disappears when using software that doesn’t support animated GIFs. Such has been the case for iOS users of Flipboard, the nifty personal magazine app that is available for both Android and iOS. This changes today, however, thanks to an update that has […]
The public beta iteration of iCloud for iOS device of all sorts has been given a reboot today, bringing with it a full user interface redesign to match iOS 7. This is the first time the public – most of the public, that is – will get a hands-on experience with the look and feel […]
Welcome to Engadget’s back to school guide! Today, we’re talking tablets. Head to the back to school hub to see the rest of the product guides as we add them throughout the month. Be sure to keep checking back; in early September, we’ll be giving away a ton of gear.
Like reality show contestants who reinvent themselves as America’s next top chef / model / crab fisher, tablets are entering a renaissance. In fact, while you probably couldn’t complete your high-school essays on an iPad or Nexus 7, a slew of optional keyboards are turning slates into capable productivity devices. And as they increase in processing power, tablets are ever thinner and lighter, making it a breeze to schlep ’em around campus in your book bag. So, where to start? How about below, where we’ve selected nine devices that’ll keep you busy before, during and after class.
There’s a new device mount in the wild this summer by the name of eleMount, one aimed directly at the aluminum-clad Apple iPhone and iPad in kind. This device works with stick-and-re-stick materials (Polyurethane elePads) both at the head and at the base, allowing you to place your device at the top and the other […]
DirecTV’s revamping its mobile apps with a focus on discovery, iPad is up first
Posted in: Today's ChiliDirecTV’s added features to its mobile apps piece by piece over the last few years, and now it’s reworking them entirely. The first one to get a makeover is its iPad app, which is getting an update today with a new menu section to make browsing easier, plus TV Show and Networks filters to go along with the existing Guide and Movies options. It also has a revamped Watch experience that helps you filter out whether the content will play on the TV or tablet and even the information pages have a new look. Of course, other features that have been around like Facebook, Twitter and GetGlue integration, channel guide, search and DVR scheduling are still in effect as well. The update provides a more “cohesive experience across platforms”, which viewers can check out pictures of in the gallery below or judge for themselves once it hits the App Store.

The iPad has been a phenomenally successful tablet, although it does seem to star to run out steam lately as its competitors play catch up in terms of market share, slowly but surely. Still, it continues to be a highly desirable piece of hardware, and the human mind never ceases to amaze as we read on how the more nefarious brains intend to cheat their fellow mankind. While a previous case involved actual apples being passed off as an iPhone, this time around, tricksters have inserted ice cubes in parcels, insuring them as iPads, hoping to collect the insurance money when the non-existent “iPads” are not delivered.
Nathan Meunch and Nigel Bennett are the two lads who hatched up this plan, but I guess they would now be in the hall of infamy, as Elaine Sloane, a lady at the post office in Telford, U.K., shared, “I just happened to say to the gentleman: ‘Is it raining outside?’ and he said yes. But it seemed strange to me because I could see from where I was sitting it didn’t look like it was raining.” Meunch’s jacket showed some spots that were damp, resulting in Sloane discovering that the parcels carried nothing but melted ice cubes that resulted in dampness all over.
Having been found guilty, the two men were slapped with a 12-month community order, in addition to spending 150 hours working in court.

Apple is reportedly planning to unveil a new thinner iPad in the coming months, as well as a Retina iPad Mini, according to sources who spoke with Bloomberg. Rumor of a thinner iPad had already surfaced earlier this month via The Wall Street Journal, and according to the latest sources, both slates will be introduced […]
Bloomberg is reporting that a retina iPad Mini and a thinner iPad are both set to release later this year. That would confirm previous reports about how the full-sized, big boy iPad was getting the iPad Mini design treatment with a narrower bezel and a thinner body
The latest Skype update has arrived in the iOS App Store and this one has a focus on video calling. Specifically, those sporting an iPhone 5 or fourth-generation iPad will now be able to make 720p HD quality video calls. While the 720p video is limited to the Retina-display devices, that is not where this […]
Remember that holographic illusion of 2Pac? It actually wasn’t a hologram, but it was done using projectors and an angled surface with both reflective and transparent properties. Now you can recreate this illusion in miniature, using nothing more than your tablet, and an inexpensive device called the i-Lusio.
Set your iPad or other similarly sized tablet into the top of the i-Lusio, then install the companion app, and you can view simulated 3-dimensional objects that look like they’re floating in space. It’s a pretty cool illusion, though it’s probably best used for things like store displays and museum exhibits. I’m not sure how useful this thing would be at home – though kids might get a kick out of it for a little while.
Check out the video below to see a few examples of what you can do with the i-Lusio:
The i-Lusio is currently available for pre-order via an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. A pledge of at least $44(USD) will get you one of your own – including the app and one download – which makes it sound like there will be a charge for downloadable content once the app is available.
