iPhone 3GS Battery Balloons To Verge Of Exploding

iPhone 3GS Battery Balloons To Verge Of Exploding

It certainly won’t surprise anyone to hear that a smartphone’s battery burst or caught fire. There have been a lot of those incidents, and the device doesn’t necessarily have to be old to suffer such a fate. Last year several Galaxy S4 units either “exploded” or caught fire due to various issues. The latest incident is a bit unusual, though it has happened in the past as well. The iPhone 3GS seen above belongs to a writer at the Letem Svetem Applem website, and as you can clearly see, the iPhone 3GS battery balloons right up to the verge of bursting, but fortunately doesn’t, the possibility of physical harm in such cases always exists.

Conan Screwed Up His iOS 7 Upgrade By Trying to Do It on an iPhone 3GS

Conan Screwed Up His iOS 7 Upgrade By Trying to Do It on an iPhone 3GS

When iOS 7 launched, Conan showed us all how to go about installing it. But as one eagle-eyed viewer has since pointed out, he screwed up big time—by trying to install the OS on an iPhone 3GS, which doesn’t even support it.

iPhone trade-in program launching at Apple retail today [UPDATE: official statement]

It’s been confirmed this morning that Apple retail stores will be launching their first iPhone trade-in program today. Refurbished iPhone 3GS Units Could Be Offered To AT&T GoPhone Customers

Refurbished iPhone 3GS Units Could Be Offered To AT&T GoPhone CustomersThe iPhone 3GS is old by technology standards, especially since it was released back in 2009 making the handset a good four years old. If that is the case why are we still talking about it? Well it seems that if you’ve always wanted an iPhone but the iPhone 4 is still a little out of your price range ($325 unlocked), AT&T’s prepaid arm, GoPhone, could soon start to offer up the iPhone 3GS as an extremely affordable handset. This is according to reports where it is believed that some of AT&T’s stores will be offering refurbished models of the iPhone 3GS to their prepaid GoPhone customers.

The handset is not expected to be advertised or publicized, but supposedly sales staff will offer it as an option to some customers who might not be able to afford their more expensive offerings. Not all AT&T stores will carry the handset, but it is expected that larger urban centers should have it in stock. Given that the phone has been discontinued and the models customers will be getting are refurbished, we guess they can’t really charge too much for it to begin with. Of course there will be limitations in the sense that the phone’s hardware is pretty old and will not be supported by iOS 7, but if an iPhone is what you want, we guess it should do in a pinch.

iPhone 5 in multi-colored plastic predicted in Apple 2013 roadmap

This week KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a projected roadmap of Apple products spanning the next 12 months, this map including no less than an iPhone 5S and a new iteration of the iPhone 5, complete with plastic casing. While an actual “official” leaked roadmap as such leaked from Apple would be a first sign of the apocalypse, we’re ready and willing to have a peek at this possible vision for the future, especially given the relatively good future foretelling we’ve seen come from Kuo specifically in the past.

    P1060331-iPods-touch-nano-2012-SlashGear-580x325

What this map shows is an iPhone 5S coming in Q3, followed within weeks by a new design and release for the iPhone 5, complete with a set of case modifications we’ve been hearing rumors and suggestions about over the past week – how odd! These predictions include a device which has largely the same specifications as the iPhone 5 as it exists on the market today, but with a 1600 mAh battery instead of 1420, 8.2mm of thickness instead of 7.6, and a weight of 130g instead of 112.

    kuo_2013_apple_roadmap

Perhaps most interesting of all is the suggestion that the refreshed iPhone 5 will be coming with multiple different colors, not unlike the most recent push with the iPod touch. This release will also have plastic casing rather than aluminum, this keeping the cost of the device down considerably – and remind yourself here that these are all predictions from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, not assurances.

    P1060336-iPods-touch-nano-2012-SlashGear-580x325

The price for this newly refreshed iPhone 5 will be between $350 and $450 unlocked (compared to the current $600-700 on the market today) and it’ll be completely free when purchased with a 2-year contract. This contradicts the pattern Apple worked with when the iPhone 4S was revealed, the “free” model being at that time the iPhone 3GS, aka the least powerful of the three models on the market. With this release there’d only be two.

This roadmap also predicts that there’ll be an iPad 5 released between the iPhone 5S and the modified iPhone 5, with a newly designed Retina MacBook Pro released at the same time. Also released with the iPhone 5S will be a modified iPod touch 5th gen and an iPod nano refresh. Predicted for Q1 is an Apple TV refresh of some kind, near the end of Q2 a new MacBook Air, and last in Q3 an iPad mini 2nd gen.

Lastly Kuo suggests that at the start of the fourth quarter of 2013 we’ll be seeing a new iMac and a new Mac mini – exciting times! Have a peek at our Apple hub for more Apple action through the year, and get ready for the multi-colored plastic of the iPhone 5 refresh – if that’s what you believe will be coming, of course.

iOS 6 tethered jailbreak updated with official Cydia, quicker installation for your A4-packing device

DNP Cydia now ready to break iOS 6 out of jail on your tethered iPhone 4 or earlier device

The iPhone Dev-Team has just outed a new version of Redsnow that opens up iOS 6 to an official version of the sinful, definitely-not-Apple Cydia store, but you’ll still have to be tethered to use it. The process is now simpler, as the latest version recognizes your already-installed iOS 6 OS and installs only the necessary jailbreak files, and Cydia is now installed automatically as well — rather than needing a complex workaround like the last version. If you’re willing to put up with the tethering and have an A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS or gen-4 iPod touch device, the laundry list of how to do it is at the source below — but there’s always the risk of bricking, so caveat emptor, of course.

Apple wins iPhone and iPad delay of ban in South Korea

Though it seemed as though Apple had lost a battle against Samsung earlier this year with a ban of both the iPad and the iPhone in South Korea, an update has been made today by the court that the defending party will be able to keep items for sale pending appeal. This event is rather similar to the situation currently happening in the USA with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, also placed back up for sale pending appeal in a completely Apple vs Samsung case. This case in South Korea had the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPad 2 banned from sale due to Samsung connectivity patents.

Oddly enough, several Samsung Galaxy devices remain banned from sale in South Korea because they’ve not sought appeals as Apple has. It is because an appeal has been sought by Apple in this case that they’re able to keep their devices up for sale in the country. The August 24th ruling in this case remains in place unless Samsung decides to take action as they have – so to speak – in the USA-based case.

Here in the USA, the case regards quite a few patens owned by Apple that Apple says Samsung crossed over with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This is just one of several devices that Apple successfully had banned over the past year inside the USA, another of them being the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, another device that has been placed back on sale after a brief period of time this Summer.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see what’s been happening in this epic battle that’ll be going on for a long, long time. It’s this battle that Google’s own people feel will be the death of us all, you might like to know, and it’s certainly not something that we’re glad to see continue – nor is anyone not profiting from the experience, of course. Stay tuned for more device wars in the courtroom.

iOS 6 jailbroken already, but only on older A4-powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 gets it jailbreak already, but only on older A4powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 probably won’t go down in history as a revolutionary update, but fortunately it’s anti-tamper measures don’t seem to have changed much either. The iPhone Dev-Team has already managed to get its redsn0w tethered jailbreak working, at least for the A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS and 4th-gen iPod touch, and you’ll find full instructions as well as a healthy list of caveats at the source link below. As to how long it’ll take to get some Cydia action on the iPhone 5 and other fresher devices and without the hassle of tethering, place your bets here.

    iOS 6 review

    iOS 6 review

Starting tomorrow, iOS users will be prompted to update their devices to the newest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system. As difficult as it is to believe, we’re already onto the sixth version of the OS, which continues to be updated with new features on a yearly basis. After pushing out so many upgrades critical to plugging a few major feature holes, the vast majority of its 200 advertised enhancements are strictly granular, as Apple continues to polish its popular OS.

That doesn’t mean, though, that this build is coming to the masses without any jarring UI changes: Apple has declared independence from Google by adopting its own Maps, added a few nice features to Mail and iCloud, thrown Facebook integration into the mix and introduced the Passbook for paperless tickets. The question is, how does it stack up against previous refreshes? Read on to find out.
