With a custom-made setup connecting an app, the iPhone, and a telescope together to take photos of space, one photographer has shown some surprisingly high-quality pics this week of our own moon. Jared Earle’s custom build included the iPhone 4S, a 5-inch lens-toting Celestron spotter scope, a Magnifi accessory, and the app Cortex Camera. With these simple components, surprising results have appeared.
The photo of the moon you’re seeing here comes from Earle’s Flickr account, and was indeed taken with an iPhone 4S. Cortex Camera is used to take a series of photos that, in the end, create one massive high-quality and, as they say, “noise free” composite image.
Though no tripod is necessary when using this app outside of this setup, it’s important that the telescope is not sitting free on its own – don’t want to drop it, after all. The Magnifi accessory is one that allows the user to mount their iPhone to any of a collection of instruments. Telescopes can be attached at the eye, as can microscopes, binoculars, and other oddities.
Earle decided to work with Cortex Camera to make up for the eyepiece he had on hand. Using electrical tape around the 24mm eyepiece allowed the Magnifi accessory to fit properly, while using Cortex Camera allowed the iPhone’s sensor to be fully utilized.
While it’s suggested that the photographer get a remote shutter of some sort or another for the iPhone – and there are many, many of them out there, mind you – Earle made the process work without. Testing this setup – or one similar to it – should be done during the day to assure one’s self of being able to execute a great one-off photo. Once night comes, you’ll want to take said photos in the dark!

Apple is thinking bigger for its next-gen iPhone and iPad models, according to rumors filtering out of Asia, with chatter of an “iPad maxi” alongside a far-higher-resolution iPhone 5S in the coming months. The rumors, which as with any iOS mutterings should be taken with the requisite pinch of salt, suggest Apple is looking to take on more directly not only the digital textbook market, but challenge big-screen Android phones with a jolt in pixel-dense resolution.
On the smartphone side, the Cupertino firm is tipped to be intending to roughly double the pixel resolution of the next-gen handset (which could launch as the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6, depending on which flavor of speculation you’re tasting at the time). According to WeiPhone, the iPhone 5S display will remain at 4-inches, but clock in at roughly three times the resolution of the original iPhone.
In fact, it’s said to use a 4-inch panel with 1.5m pixels, up from the roughly 727,000 of the current iPhone 5. A 1704 x 960 display – keeping the aspect ratio the same, for ease of app transition – would fit the bill, though it’s unclear where Apple would source the screen, since panels of that size and (489ppi) resolution aren’t exactly common.
Adding to the intrigue is the suggestion that Apple will also trim the bezels of the iPhone, thus reducing the 5S’ size compared to the current handset.
At the other end of the scale in mobile, Apple is separately tipped to be considering a so-called “iPad maxi” with a screen larger than the 9.7-inches of the current full-sized iPad. The “maxi” variant would measure in at 12.9-inches, so ETNews claims, with a tentative release in the first half of 2014.
The larger tablet is being seen as a strong contender to replace textbooks in classrooms, but also as a rival to smaller ultraportable notebooks for those whose needs don’t extend to a full desktop OS. While the scale of that audience isn’t unclear, there’s undoubtedly been a surge in third-party keyboard dock accessories for use with both the regular iPad and iPad mini, turning them into notebook alternatives.
Apple has long insisted that it has no plans to introduce a touchscreen MacBook, claiming the ergonomics of such a device are not sound. However, a larger – normally keyboard-free – tablet might better fit the bill, presumably slotting into the company’s range between the existing 9.7-inch iPad and the MacBook Air.
As we said, Apple rumors can easily edge out of “possible” and into “wishful thinking”, though products such as those suggested would at least address some of the company’s bigger challenges at the moment: Android phones with rapidly climbing pixel-density, already out-Retina’ing Apple’s own Retina displays, and the growth of touchscreen ultrabooks running Windows 8.

This week at CTIA 2013, Verizon announced a partnership with Latino-centric mobile carrier brand Viva Movil – and they did it with the company’s top shareholder Jennifer Lopez. Speaking about how the Latino population is up at 50 million strong – and growing – Verizon’s own chief operating officer Marni Walden made it clear: this company wants to expand through an exclusive partnership with Viva Movil.
This partnership will be working with one of Verizon’s largest premium retailers Moorehead Communications as well as Brightstar. Walden introduced Jennifer Lopez who represents Viva Movil as a celebrity and a leader in the Latino community – she says – and speaks about statistics and bits and pieces that make it appear that Verizon with Viva Movil will be in the best position possible to address the Spanish-speaking market segment in the near future.
Lopez spoke about an exclusive line of accessories that she’s created herself. At the moment it would appear that this includes iPhone 5 cases – but it’s likely that other devices will be included as well.
“There’s no specific place for Latinos to really, really be catered to, which is why we did this. But anyone can come in and enjoy this.” – Jennifer Lopez, Chief Creative Officer for Viva Movil
The company “Viva Movil, by Jennifer Lopez”, as she called it, will be opening up today online. The first store will be open on June 15 and it’ll be open in New York City. More physical stores will be opening across the USA – 15 in all, for starters, – in places like L.A. and Miami.
