Apple’s iPhone 5c has not exactly been a model device from Cupertino when it comes to sales figures. We have brought you word that Apple is apparently sitting on 3 million unsold iPhone 5c units, with disappointing sales figures in China, not to mention lagging behind the iPhone 5s overall. There are whispers going around that Apple is going to introduce a new 8GB version of the iPhone 5c.

Before it was officially announced, rumors claimed that the iPhone 5c would be a major win for Apple. That’s because this phone was expected to be competitively priced so much so that it would be as a strong contender in emerging markets. China and India were cited as the two markets where iPhone 5c could perform very well. However when it was unveiled, all rumors about its price went out the window, particularly about price in emerging markets. In China, the iPhone 5c is barely any cheaper than the iPhone 5s, and that could be one of the reasons behind its disappointing performance.

If the latest statistics from an analytics firm called Mixpanel are true, then the iPhone could very well be on the verge of accounting for over 20 percent off the entire iPhone market share. If the current flagship’s growth continues at this rate soon enough its going to overtake the iPhone 4S to clinch the second slot of the most popular Apple smartphone. Its plastic touting sibling, the iPhone 5c, isn’t doing nearly as well, which can come to be expected of it now.

As we have been finding out these days, Apple’s iPhone 5c isn’t doing so well for itself. By no means does that put Apple into any financial trouble, but it certainly ruined a pretty good streak for Apple who has in the past managed to churn out iPhones that do extremely well.
There are many reasons why the phone isn’t doing as great. Some attribute it to the fact that it isn’t really much cheaper, meaning that customers would rather fork out extra to get the latest hardware with the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5c is probably one of Apple’s iPhones that isn’t doing as hot as it should. But why not? After all it is cheaper than the iPhone 5s, shouldn’t that be a reason why customers pick it over its more expensive sibling?
Well according to our previous report, former Apple ad exec thinks otherwise. He thinks that due to the price difference being only $100, customers would rather pay that difference for a newer and more powerful phone. The market can be swayed by new competitors offering more bang for the buck as opposed to their rivals, whereas for some its a matter of brand loyalty while some just want to stick with the product that has always worked for them. When Apple launched the iPhone 5c, many expected it to be a success due to its slightly lower price point. Unfortunately that was not the case and sales of the iPhone 5c definitely did not live up to expectations. In fact some might even call it a flop. While the iPhone 5c was priced a tad cheaper than the iPhone 5s, and with it being priced at $100 on-contract, we guess Apple thought that maybe the phones would be flying off the shelves as it was indeed a cheaper alternative. Unfortunately that was not the case, as Apple’s CEO Tim Cook admitted. So why didn’t the iPhone 5c do as well as Apple had imagined? Well according to former Apple advertising executive, Ken Segall, he has weighed in on why he thinks the iPhone 5c was not the money maker that Apple had initially expected.
According to Segall, he believed that Apple’s plan to turn the use of plastic into a positive one actually backfired on them. Posting on his blog, Segall wrote, “Unfortunately for Apple, creativity can be a double-edged sword. The ‘unapologetically plastic’ line in the product video was so interesting and memorable, it got played back over and over in articles about the lackluster demand for iPhone 5c. Not exactly what Apple intended.” He also notes that while the iPhone 5c was priced cheaper than the iPhone 5s, it wasn’t priced that much cheaper and customers ended up deciding to drop that extra $100 to get the iPhone 5s instead. The iPhone 5c can hardly be called a success. In fact Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, had admitted that sales of the iPhone 5c were lower than expected. We’re not sure why the iPhone 5c didn’t do well, perhaps it wasn’t cheap enough or perhaps it didn’t have as many features to justify its price, but if there’s one thing it did do was help drive iPhone 5s sales, at least that’s what the analysts seem to think. That being said, will there be an iPhone 6c later this year? We’re sure Apple had kicked off the iPhone 5c with hopes to continue it with every generation of iPhones they launch, right?
Well it turns out that the iPhone 5c will be dropped completely once the iPhone 6 is launched. This is according to a report from the South China Morning Post who claims that Apple will be discontinuing the iPhone 5c once the iPhone 6 is launched. The iPhone 5s on the other hand is expected to be kept around although it will be made from cheaper materials. We’re not sure what that means since using cheaper materials would essentially turn it into another device, but since nothing is confirmed for now, take it with a grain of salt.
