iOS 7.1.1 Update Brings Touch ID Improvements

iOS 7.1.1 Update Brings Touch ID Improvements

We reported last week that Apple was working on a new incremental software update for iOS. It would be the first such update after the company released iOS 7.1, the first major release since iOS 7.0 was pushed out to the public last last year. Just now Apple has released iOS 7.1.1 for compatible devices. It primarily brings bug fixes, as well as improvements for Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5s.

Prior to this update a lot of iPhone 5s users had complained about Touch ID performance. They experienced gradual worsening of the sensor’s ability to recognize registered fingerprints. Today’s update brings improvements which means that users should no longer face those issues when trying to gain access to their device through Touch ID. It is not surprising at all that Apple has included improvements for this problem in iOS 7.1.1 since it was expected to do so.

The update also includes a bug fix which makes keyboard in iOS 7 more responsive. Apple overhauled the keyboard in iOS 7, giving it a much flatter user interface that is in line with major UI changes made to iOS. An issue that affected use of Bluetooth keyboard when VoiceOver was enabled has also been fixed.

iOS 7.1.1 release will be staged, meaning that it won’t go live across all regions at once. Once it does go live a notification will pop up on all supported devices. The update can be downloaded and installed on the device itself.

Apple Releases iOS 7.1.1 With Touch ID Improvements

iPhone-5s-fingerprint-sensor Apple has released a new update to iOS 7 today, a minor point update with bug fixes and improvements. One such improvement beefs up Touch ID performance, which should mean better recognition of fingerprints registered with your iPhone 5s device. Some users had cited a gradual worsening of the Touch ID sensor’s ability to recognize existing fingerprints, so hopefully this clears that up for… Read More

Trade In Site Sees One Third Of Galaxy S5 Buyers Switching From iPhone

Samsung’s 2014 flagship was one of the most hotly anticipated devices of this year. At MWC in February the company finally unveiled the Galaxy S5. It went on sale on April 11th in more than 150 countries around the world. A lot of customers will be upgrading from their existing phones to get their hands on this new flagship. Mobile trade-in website CompareMyMobile saw over one third, 38 percent to be precise, of all Galaxy S5 customers shifting from an iPhone.

According to the website, it witnessed a 210 percent rise in customers who traded in their iPhone 4S units in order to get a Galaxy S5. The second most traded device after the outdated iPhone was Samsung’s very own Galaxy S3 which saw a 196 percent rise in trade-ins. iPhone 5s came in third place with a 184 percent rise.

Majority of the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S3 owners may already have been itching to switch given that their two year service contracts were most likely up. Though its interesting to note that a great deal of iPhone 5s owners also opted to switch for Samsung’s latest flagship.

Samsung itself now expects the Galaxy S5 to do much better in this quarter than it had initially expected. The company hopes to ship as many as 35 million Galaxy S5 units within this quarter.

Galaxy S5 Versus HTC One M8, iPhone 5s, Nexus 5 In Torture Test

Let’s face it, we’ve all dropped our phones before, especially brand new ones where your heart actually feels like it skipped a beat at the idea of your brand new, and possibly very expensive smartphone goes crashing to the floor. For the most part our phones are relatively durable and can withstand a drop or two, perhaps with some chipping in the paint and some slight scratches as the result of it.

However which phone amongst the flagship phones is the most durable? Now we’ve seen the Samsung Galaxy S5 go up against the Galaxy S4 in a drop test in which it did surprisingly well, but how does it fare against thee HTC One M8, the iPhone 5s, and the Nexus 5? Well the folks at gadget warranty outlet, SquareTrade, decided to find that out in a test of their own.

The results? Once again the Samsung Galaxy S5 has proven that it is more than capable of holding its own. The device managed to fare better than the rest at both the drop test and the dunk test, although to be fair the Galaxy S5 is water-resistant, so that might explain how it was able to hold up under water. Interestingly enough the iPhone 5s was surprisingly durable as well.

iPhones are notorious for not working when it has been immersed in water but surprisingly not only did it survive the dunk test, but its speakers continued to function after, unlike the HTC One M8 and the Nexus 5, where both their speakers failed after being dunked underwater. In any case these are hardly the most scientific ways of testing a device’s durability but it’s still worth taking note of anyway, especially if you’re the sort with butter fingers.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes iDroid iPhone 5/5S Case: !

Last week, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima shared images of the iDroid case via Twitter. It makes the iPhone 5 and 5S look like the eponymous cutting edge walkie-talkie used by Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Snake must have been wearing cargo pants in the game, because this thing is huge. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 620x430magnify

Kojima also pointed out the features of the case on Twitter. It has a blue light in place of the in-game item’s holographic display and a fake antenna that’s actually a small stylus. The case also has buttons for the iPhone’s sleep and volume controls. The part of the case that covers the phone’s camera lens and flash can also be removed. As a final touch, Kojima encourages fans who will get the iDroid case to download the free MGS V: GZ app. metal gear solid v ground zeroes idroid iphone 5 5s case 2 620x914magnify

Galaxy S5 Versus iPhone 5s In Biometrics Test

Biometric security appears to be one of the new trends in the mobile industry. Granted it isn’t exactly new per se, but with Apple’s introduction of Touch ID in the iPhone 5s, safe to say that it managed to generate a fair amount of interest from the competition, like Samsung and the Galaxy S5 handset.

During our hands-on review of the Samsung Galaxy S5, we didn’t really get a lot of time to test the fingerprint scanner too thoroughly, but the demonstrations were pretty convincing. However for those who are wondering how the sensor fares compared to the iPhone 5s’ Touch ID, YouTuber Tanner Marsh has recently released a video comparing both phones’ fingerprint scanners. (more…)
