Foxconn Tasks 300,000 Workers With Production Of Half A Million iPhone 5s Daily

Foxconn Tasks 300,000 Workers With Production Of Half A Million iPhone 5s Daily

The iPhone 5s was launched to intense demand back in September. Apple quickly sold out of its initial launch inventory and then shipping times slipped down to a couple of weeks. Almost a couple of months after launch, shipping times have now started to improve, estimates range between 3-5 business days on Apple’s online store. Recent checks of 60 Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. revealed that 90 percent of the stores now have iPhone 5s in stock, plus Apple has now also started selling the SIM-free unlocked variant through its stores. Much of this is due to the fact that Apple has ordered Foxconn to boost production, the Wall Street Journal reports that 300,000 workers at Foxconn are now producing half a million (500,000) iPhone 5s units every single day.

The report cites a Foxconn executive who reveals that the manufacturer is now running 100 individual production lines around the clock. Foxconn is now at its maximum output capacity of 500,000 units per day. Nearly 600 workers man the individual production lines as opposed to 500 per line for iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 as assembly procedure for those smartphones is less complicated. Even though there’s consistent demand, Foxconn is reportedly reluctant to expand its output capacity as there have been rumors that Apple might tap other manufacturers like Pegatron and Wistron to build iPhones next year. As of now, Foxconn generates 40 percent of its revenue from Apple.

iPhones Account For 76% Of All Smartphone Sales In Japan This October

It was recently reported that Japan is now Apple’s fastest growing market. The Land of the Rising Sun is where Apple’s operating profit grew in the last fiscal year, it is also the market from where Apple is getting its biggest profit margins from. Recent statistics from WSJ reveal that Apple commands 37 percent and 50 percent of the smartphone and tablet market in Japan, respectively. Figures released by Kantar World Panel reiterate Apple’s dominance in Japan as 76 percent of all smartphones sold in Japan this October were accounted for by the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5c.

Apple’s increase in market share with the new iPhones can also be attributed to the fact that NTT DoCoMo, the country’s largest mobile operator, is now carrying both new iPhones. 61 percent of the sales that Apple amassed in October were generated by NTT DoCoMo. During the past fiscal year, Apple’s sales in Japan have climbed almost 30 percent and its margins are 15 percent higher in the country than anywhere else in the world. It goes without saying that Japan is a very lucrative market for Apple right now, and figures like these keep coming in, customers in Japan will surely continue to put a lot of green on Apple’s balance sheets.

iPhone 5s Supply Nearly Equals Demand Now In The U.S.

iPhone 5s Supply Nearly Equals Demand Now In The U.S.

The iPhone 5s was launched back in September to high demand. Throughout this entire year we had been keeping up with an endless string of rumors about Apple’s latest iPhone, and when it finally came out, customers certainly wanted one for themselves. Apple has certainly been trying its best to meet demand, however back in October a survey of 60 Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. revealed that only 10 percent had the latest iPhone in stock. Things are looking much better now, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. His recent checks of the 60 U.S. Apple Retail Stores he surveys reveal that now almost 90 percent of the stores have iPhone 5s in stock.

Munster claims that iPhone 5s supply will finally be able to catch up with demand early next month. A crucial time since the holiday shopping craze is definitely worth capitalizing upon. Shipping times have certainly improved, the online Apple Store now lists only three to five business days as opposed to two to three weeks which were listed earlier this month. Munster also notes that iPhone 5s availability on major carriers such as AT&T and Verizon is far better this year than it was around the same time last year, when the iPhone 5 was released.

    Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: fall 2013

    Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide: fall 2013

As the leaves turn to gold and flutter from the trees, the Engadget team digs out their scarves and mittens to get ready for the mad rush of phone launches that take place ahead of the holiday season. We’ve seen big devices (both large and high-profile ones) enter the world over the last few months, including new heavyweights from Apple and Google. Then there’s Samsung, Nokia and HTC, which are all following the philosophy that bigger is better.

But it’s not just on the hardware side that things are getting exciting. T-Mobile’s eliminated roaming charges and Verizon is doubling its LTE speeds to a whopping 80 Mbps. AT&T is offering customers a $5 daily pass for internet and is making mobile share plans the standard rather than the exception. Of course, if you’d prefer unlimited data, Sprint is promising that its Spark LTE will beat the field — but it’s currently only available in NYC, LA, Chicago, Tampa and Miami. Whether you’re looking for a smartphone right now, or if you’re contract is about to expire, this is your guide to the best ones on the market.

Apple iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor technology revealed in patent documents

The magic behind Apple’s Touch ID technology has received an unveiling in the form of the company’s latest pair of patent applications. One of the patents describes the various parts of the button itself and how it senses and reads a finger touching it. The other patent discusses how the fingerprint data and verification are […]

Patent Application For Touch ID Shows How Apple Secures Fingerprint Information On iPhone 5s

A new patent application published by the USPTO (via MacRumors) shows some more detail around Apple’s use of Touch ID and the fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5s. Apple has been mostly quiet about the specifics of how the tech works, while generally asserting that the fingerprint information never goes to a server, and only remains on the phone itself in a “secure enclave” which isn’t accessible by the rest of the system or third-party devs.

The patent describes a system that not only siloes data on the Touch ID “enclave” section of the A7 processor, but that also encrypts the fingerprint maps registered on the device to make it that much more difficult for any thieves to even attempt to pull the data off in any kind of usable form. The enclave is a one-way street, too: the system can check new fingerprints against the stored ones, but there’s no way to check or call up the stored fingerprints at all for external examination once they’re registered.

Otherwise, the system works likely as you’d expect it to, checking against stored profiles for possible matches (and using stored lower resolution templates based on variables like different angles to make it more likely to correctly ID your finger). But another patent also published this week shows a breakdown of all the components within the Touch ID hardware, and explains how the actual sensor hardware can be hidden behind an opaque lens that’s been printed with an “ink assembly.” It’s likely this needs to be uniform to read correctly, however, as Apple notably left off its small rounded square icon on the 5s home button, after that has graced each since the iPhone’s initial introduction.

These patents provide a little more clarity on what exactly is going on when you rest your finger or thumb on that 5s home screen and have it magically unlock, and it’s reassuring to see just how much thought Apple has put into making sure the info truly is secure.
