Apple Reportedly Reduces iPhone 5c Orders, Increases iPhone 5s Output For Q4

Apple is cutting its orders for the iPhone 5c ahead of the fourth quarter, a new report from the Wall Street Journal claims. Citing people familiar with the situation, the WSJ says that Apple asked its two iPhone assembly partners Pegatron and Hon Hai to reduce the volume of orders for it lower-cost smartphone going into the end of the year, by under 20 percent and around one-third respectively.

The iPhone 5c reduction also comes alongside an iPhone 5s production increase, however, according to two Hon Hai executives speaking to the WSJ. Apple saw much higher than anticipated demand for the new gold-colored version especially, the report says, leading to an uptick in volume output for those devices. Still, the cuts for iPhone 5c orders seem to also include a 50 percent decrease in parts from at least one supplier, indicating Apple is possibly preparing to reduce volumes even further.

The new information from the Wall Street Journal backs up claims made earlier this week from analyst firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which said that the iPHone 5s was outselling the iPhone 5c by a ratio of two to one. That also lines up with the live data being tracked by mobile analytics firm Mixpanel, which sees iPhone 5s adoption at just over double that of the iPhone 5c, a little over a month after launch.

The above lines up with anecdotal reports we’ve heard from various Apple Store and carrier retail employees that the iPhone 5s is hard to keep in stock, while the iPhone 5c remains readily available. At first, it was unclear whether or not this might be attributable simply to an abundance of supply of the lower cost device, but increasingly, it seems demand plays a role, too.

Apple still managed to sell 9 million iPhones in total during its launch weekend, however, and the iPhone 5c isn’t designed as a marquee or flagship seller. What’s more likely is that interest in the iPhone 5c burns more slowly, but perhaps more consistently – its target shoppers aren’t the type to rush out to a launch day celebration, and are much more likely to be swayed by in-store specials and carrier/retailer discounts as time goes on and their contracts run out.

We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on the matter, and will update if we hear more.

iPhone 5s and 5c accelerate death of the 3.5-inch screen

Apple’s iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s launch may have set a new record for opening weekend sales, but they’ve also significantly hastened the death of the 3.5-inch iOS screen size, new research suggests. Looking at North American web traffic and the screen sizes iPhone users were browsing on, Chitika Insights says in just a week […]

China Mobile iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Release Possible On November 11th

China Mobile iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Release Possible On November 11th

There has been a lot of speculation about the launch of the new iPhones on China Mobile. The world’s largest mobile carrier, China Mobile, is expected to finally begin carrying the iPhones. It has more than 700 million subscribers, which is what makes it the largest mobile carrier. Its rivals, China Unicom and China Telecom, have already been selling the iPhones for quite some time now. A new purported promotional poster has leaked which indicates that China Mobile might release iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on November 11th.

A few weeks back it was reported that Apple has received the regulatory approval required to put its iPhones on China Mobile’s unique network. The only thing that’s supposedly getting in the way of the release is approval from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which is yet to issue a license to the carrier so that it can light up its TD-LTE network. When it has the license in hand, China Mobile can launch its LTE network and the iPhones are likely going to be the poster boys. The promotional poster hints at a November 11th release of both iPhones, which will have access to 100 Mbps download speeds. This would certainly be a breath of fresh air for existing iPhone users on China Mobile. It is believed that there are 42 million iPhones being used on China Mobile as it is, and they’re not even compatible with the carrier’s 3G network, users are stuck with slow EDGE speeds. Moreover, the availability of both new iPhones on the world’s largest mobile network is likely to push iPhone’s sales figures up in China. [Image via CTechCN]

Apps On iPhone 5s Crashing Twice As Frequently As On Other Models

Apps On iPhone 5s Crashing Twice As Frequently As On Other Models

It is definitely not surprising to notice app crashes, particularly after a major OS update. Such app crashes usually occur at a higher rate than usual, but then as subsequent incremental updates come, the bugs are ironed out and the frequency falls down. App management platform Crittercism makes an interesting observation about the iPhone 5s, that apps on iPhone 5s are crashing twice as often as they would on iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5. Crashes on the iPhone 5s are noted at two percent as compared to one percent on the plastic and last year’s iPhone.

Andrew Levy, CEO of Crittercism, believes that the reason why apps are crashing twice as more on the iPhone 5s is because developers didn’t have access to the hardware prior to the apps being released, they were only able to check if their apps were compatible with iOS 7 during the beta testing phase. Apple has employed a new 64-bit A7 chip aided by an M7 coprocessor in the iPhone 5s, obviously developers couldn’t have been given access prior to the official announcement. Though Levy says that Apple has done a good job of making this major transition, of shifting to 64-bit processors, “nearly invisible.” Since iOS 7 was released on September 18th and the iPhone 5s on September 20th, Apple has rolled out a couple of incremental iOS 7 updates to address any and all issues that are coming up. Have you noticed higher crash rates on iPhone 5s as compared to your iPhone 5?

Crittercism suggests iPhone 5s crashes twice as often as 5c or 5

Apps on the iPhone 5s are currently crashing at twice the rate they do on the 5c or 5, according to a report by Crittercism of millions of app crashes. The crash rate for the 5c and 5 are both under one percent, but the crash rate for the 5s is about two percent. The […]

iPhone 5s shipping cut to 2-3 weeks, Gold to November

It would appear that Apple’s supply of the iPhone 5s has been safely restored to near-normal as the “October” shipping time has been reduced to 2-3 weeks. Now that we’re inside October, it certainly wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to stick with the October shipping time note, but up on Apple.com you’ll now […]

Unity iOS 7 game controller support reinforces “optional” state

Seeing the Apple-made universal game controller support in iOS 7 was a healthy boost of confidence for game developers around the mobile universe earlier this year. For the folks at Unity, this meant they’d be able to release games that were working with a compatible support module that would be able to take full advantage […]

iPhone 5S Users Experiencing ‘Blue Screen Of Death’ Bug [Video]

Apple launched its iPhone 5S just a few weeks ago, although shortly after its release, users of the new iPhone have been reporting a number of issues with the device. We recently heard the motion sensors on the iPhone 5S are slightly out of whack, as well as rumors of the device possibly bending just like the iPhone 5 did when it was first released. A new issue with the iPhone 5S has come up, this time bringing the infamous “Blue Screen of Death” with it. (more…)

Does Your iPhone 5S Crash With a Blue Screen of Death?

If internet chatter is to be believed, Apple has taken a rather unfortunate leaf out of Microsoft’s book: its iPhone 5S seems to be crashing in glorious style with a Blue Screen of Death.

Apple Looking For Someone With Knowledge Of China Mobile’s Unique Network

Apple Looking For Someone With Knowledge Of China Mobiles Unique Network

If there haven’t already been many hints of the impending launch of the iPhones on China Mobile, here is another one. Apple has a new position open at its Beijing office who has knowledge and experience of working with China Mobile’s homegrown unique network standard. The person hired in this position will be required to “support and drive the carrier approval of mobile phones.” Now the company won’t be doing that if it didn’t have any plans of bringing its smartphones over to the world’s largest mobile carrier, which touts more than 700 million subscribers. Only recently Apple received the network access license required to put its new iPhones on China Mobile’s network, so its probably just a matter of time before an official announcement of the partnership is made.

China Mobile has never offered the iPhone, ever. It has had a number of discussions with Apple and it is believed that a favorable arrangement has now been hashed out. Purported promotional material depicting iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c available on China Mobile has leaked, while only recently we saw a leaked screenshot of an iPhone 5s working on China Mobile’s unique TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE standards which aren’t used by any other carriers. China Mobile said a few months back that it is keen on selling the iPhone, though several technical and commercial issued remains. Hopefully they’ll be cleared up soon so that current and prospective China Mobile customers can finally get their hands on the new iPhones, officially.
