This year’s first day of adoption for Apple’s iOS 7 has, according to Chitika, hit just over 18% in just under 24 hours since release. In the first day of adoption for iOS 6 last year – one year ago nearly to the day, as it were – web usage for Apple’s newest mobile operating […]
Tomorrow Apple’s new iPhones will finally be released to the public in ten select countries around the world. The U.S. is one of those countries, Apple, its retail and carrier partners will begin giving out the devices tomorrow. Two new iPhones have been announced this year, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. Pre-orders were only accepted for the latter. Target has opened up pre-orders for the iPhone 5C, it is offering the 16GB variant for $79, knocking $20 off Apple’s price and matching Walmart’s in the process. Not only that, customers who have a Target REDcard will get an additional 5 percent discount.
Pre-orders can now be placed through Target Mobile centers. The price cut is only being offered for the base iPhone 5C model, Target will charge the full price for all other models. The retailer will sell the iPhone 5S as well, but it isn’t offering a $10 discount for its base model like Walmart. From Apple Retail Stores across the country, base models of both smartphones will be available for $99 and $199 respectively. This is obviously on contract pricing, customers will have to pick out a service contract with either AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint. All four carriers will also begin selling the smartphones through their own stores tomorrow.

Supposing you’ve seen the calls of opposition from Apple nay-sayers over the past week, you’ll be interested to know that the heads of Apple aren’t immune to talk of “non-innovative” releases in the iPhone. Speaking with Bloomberg Businessweek on several topics here in the launch week of both the iPhone 5s / iPhone 5c and […]
As you can see in the video above, Apple’s new fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5s isn’t restricted to human users. After commandeering a cat, I tested a colleague’s hypothesis that you could register the identifying skin segments of your favorite furry friends for Touch ID, too.
The cat’s paw worked, and while it encountered more frequent failures than did a fingerprint, it was able to unlock the phone again repeatedly when positioned correctly on the sensor. Note that no other paw pads would unlock the device, and that cats essentially have unique “fingerprints” just like people, so this doesn’t make the Touch ID sensor any less secure.
For the curious, I also tested the 5s fingerprint sensor on the heel of my palm, as well as on the inside of my forearm up around the wrist, and found that I could register and successfully unlock with both skin regions. Again, it was trickier to get the unlock to work consistently, and trying to fool the sensor by using the same part of the body on the opposing limb never worked.
To clarify, this isn’t a ‘hack’ of Apple Touch ID tech, like the kind a group of individuals is trying to crowdfund via the istouchidhackedyet.com covered earlier this morning by ZDNet. But it is a broadening of the definition of what counts as a “fingerprint” by the iPhone 5s scanner’s standards, so if you think your pet needs access to your accounts, feel free to register them as one of your five stored Touch ID profiles.
TechCrunch’s Natasha Lomas contributed to this article.
We do know that Apple will not be making available the fingerprint sensor to developers, and that could have a role to play in a bunch of hackers pooling their resources together to launch istouchidhackedyet.com. Basically, all the incentives are listed there if you think that you have what it takes to hack into the iPhone 5S’ fingerprint scanner. The list remains open to anyone with the technical capability as well as cojones, and the total booty will obviously grow with time as more and more people pledge some money.
Right now, we have heard whispers on the ground that the iPhone 5S is in “short supply” for Friday’s upcoming launch, and you can bet your bottom dollar that hackers will be part of those who are eager to wrap their hands on the latest flagship from Apple. Right now, the total booty has already passed the $2,000 mark, with other items thrown into the mix including a copious amount of alcohol and a “dirty sex book” for good measure. Well worth your time and effort to give it a go? All in all, the fame that will follow upon hacking the fingerprint scanner would far outweigh whatever prize you end up with.

Apple typically announces how many phones they’ve managed to sell via pre-order on the first day, a number which has been typically high, but their recent silence has suggested that maybe they did not sell as many iPhone 5c units as predicted. One analyst has predicted that Apple could have sold 2.2 million units of the iPhone 5c, and Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, has chimed in with his own estimations and has revealed that he expects Apple to sell anywhere between 5-6 million iPhone units during the weekend that the iPhones go up for sale.
