Twelve South HiRise for iPhone gives iOS devices an adjustable perch

Twelve South HiRise for iPhone gives your iOS device a powered perch

There’s an abundance of iOS device docks, but many aren’t well-suited to deskside use when they sit too low and limit use of the audio jack. Twelve South’s new HiRise for iPhone bucks that trend. The stand raises smaller iOS devices closer to eye level, where they’re well-positioned for video chats and listening to music with headphones. Owners have to bring their own Lightning cables for power, but they won’t have to worry about case or device compatibility thanks to an adjustable rear support. That flexibility helps justify the HiRise’s relatively high $35 price — it won’t be obsolete the moment that Apple and accessory makers change form factors.

Frosted Glass Effects: Why I Switched to Android After All These Years

Frosted Glass Effects: Why I Switched to Android After All These Years

Some people have called me an Apple fanboy. I stood in line for hours for the first iPhone and then again for almost every new iOS device that came out. I own more Apple devices than t-shirts (I’m not a big t-shirt fan, but still, it’s a lot of devices…). And I have convinced quite a few people over the years to switch to Macs, iPhones and iPads.

Apple to start USB power adapter trade-in program, offer new chargers for $10

Apple to start USB power adapter trade-in program, offer new chargers for $10

Apple is investigating the death of a flight attendant who was electrocuted by answering an iPhone 5 that was charging, and now it’s taking a step to ease fears about potentially faulty USB power adapters. Though Cook and Co. don’t identify whether the plug involved in the deadly incident was from a third-party manufacturer, they explain that “recent reports have suggested that some counterfeit and third party adapters may not be designed properly and could result in safety issues.” With that in mind, the House that Jobs Built is instituting the USB Power Adapter Takeback Program, which will let folks pick up first-party iPad, iPhone and iPod plugs for $10 (instead of the usual $19) if they return their any of their current adapters. Don’t plan to stock up on the power-giving cubes though, as the deal is limited to one adapter for each device you own.

While the company does draw attention to concerns with chargers made by other manufacturers, it notes that “not all third party adapters have an issue.” If you’re interested in trading the accessory for some peace of mind, you’ll have to head to an Apple retail store or an authorized service provider between August 16th and October 18th.

Apple Announces USB Charger Replacement Program

Apple Announces USB Charger Replacement ProgramWe’ve been hearing far too many stories these days on how using unofficial Apple chargers have caused several cases of electrocution. This has prompted Apple to issue a statement asking customers to refrain from using these products as a safety precaution. Now the good news is that if you are using an unofficial charger due to it being cheaper, Apple is hoping to get you to buy an official charger by announcing a USB charger replacement program.

Basically what this replacement program does is that it allows Apple customers to walk into an Apple retail store or an authorized reseller, and trade-in a charger they don’t feel comfortable with for an official charger at a discount of $10. Granted this isn’t exactly a huge discount and we’re sure unofficial chargers can be had for $10, it’s still the peace of mind knowing that at least this charger has Apple’s backing and we guess $10 saved is better than nothing.

The program will kick off on the 16th of August and if you’d like to find out more, hit up Apple’s website for the details.

Square for iOS now records and tracks payments, prints over Bluetooth

Many shops that use Square readers still have to accept checks and gift cards, but they haven’t had an easy time reconciling those physical payments with the digital variety. Thankfully, updated versions of Square for Android and iOS should bring harmony by recording and tracking payments in virtually any format. The new release is particularly friendly to iPads serving as registers, giving them both cash management tools and support for printing receipts over Bluetooth. Storeowners whose sales still involve lots of paper or plastic will want to grab the latest Square apps through the source links.

Study Finds Trade-In Programs Can Sway Customer Loyalty, Could Be To Apple’s Benefit

Study Finds Trade In Programs Can Sway Customer Loyalty, Could Be To Apples Benefit

We’ve heard the rumors that Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, is looking to increase the number of iPhones bought at Apple retail stores. The reason behind this is because Cook believes that the iPhone is a gateway product from which customers could then be shown how their phone integrates with a Mac computer and so on. Part of Cook’s plan to make it more enticing would be to offer a trade-in program and according to a recent study by the NPD Group, they have found that offering a trade-in program could be beneficial as it has the potential to sway customer loyalty.

According to the statistics, it was found that 55% of those surveyed (1,000 smartphone users participated in this study) said that they would be willing to use a trade-in program, and 60% said that a better trade-in offer could sway their choice of retailers. We can only imagine what this means for Apple as it could possibly entice customers from other platforms to walk into an Apple store, trade-in their device, and walk out with an iPhone, although the rumors of Apple’s trade-in program seems to suggest that only iPhones are eligible, but we do see the potential if Apple were to open it up to non-iPhone devices as well.

What do you guys think? Would you be willing to consider getting an iPhone if you could walk into an Apple store and trade-in your old device for it (and pay the difference in value)?
