iPhone Is Most Desired Smartphone In Emerging Markets [Survey]

Companies pay special attention to emerging markets as there’s significant room there for growth. Such markets are catered to by a plethora of low-end or mid-range smartphones, usually powered by Android. Samsung holds a strong position, which gives it a leg up on Apple when it comes to their global statistics. The iPhone doesn’t exactly fit the range of most customers in emerging markets, though that doesn’t mean they can’t desire for one. A recent survey finds that in majority of the emerging markets, iPhone happens to be the most desired smartphone.

“Fake Steve Jobs” Blogger Almost Figured Out

This article was written on July 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

Apple fan or not, if you haven’t visited “The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs,” go take a look around, it’ll be worth it. The blog has become quite popular over the last several months, and even the real Steve Jobs has admitted to reading the blog. It’s funny, and entertaining, and one of my favorite posts came from the day the iPhone launched. It was titled “29 June 2007: The day the world changed.” I’d say his older material is better than some of the recent stuff, but it’s all still good.

People have been wondering for a while now who this “Fake Steve” is and many have been going to the extremes to try and figure it out. Apple 2.0 recently posted (as have others) that all evidence is pointing to a man named Andy Ihnatko who writes tech reviews for the Chicago Sun Times and also does back-page humor for MacWorld. After checking out two of Ihnatko’s blogs (here and here), you can’t help but notice the similarities in the writing style.

Now, when I said people were going to extremes to find out who the author is, I meant it. TUAW.com posted about how one site put their detective hat on to solve the mystery:

Iphone haikuIf you checked out Fake Steve Jobs’s site yesterday, you might have seen a short post about a marginally funny iPhone Haiku site. I’ve still got the post in my Google Reader, as you can see in the pic. Seems harmless, right?

That’s what FSJ thought. But apparently, the link was sent to him by the guys at Sitening (who also created the Haiku site as a lark), and the link he was sent was a specially created link, made up just for FSJ by the Sitening guys. See where this is going? When he clicked the link, they tracked his IP, and here it is: 68.160.21.224. That IP traces back to a Verizon service, which the Sitening guys say is in Boston, MA.

Considering Ihnatko lives in the Boston area, I think the hunt for Fake Steve is just about over. Unfortunately, part of the appeal for me was that no one knew who this guy was.

Anyways, check out Fake Steve if you haven’t.

Slimo Lightning Charging Patch for iOS Helps You Quit Cables

There are two reasons why I’m not a fan of most wireless chargers for mobile devices: they make it awkward to use your device while it’s charging and they require bulky cases for your mobile device. Slimo easily takes care of my second complaint. The first one? Not so much.

slimo lightning wireless charging patch for iphone ipad ipad mini ipod touch 620x648magnify

Unfortunate name choice aside, Slimo is indeed slimey slim. Instead of a bulky case it takes the form of a conductive patch that’s just 0.014″ thick. The patch delivers power to newer iOS devices via a Lightning connector. This means that you can attach Slimo without removing your iOS device’s case. You can even keep it underneath a case, as long as the latter isn’t made of metal. Slimo will work with any charging base that complies with the Qi Wireless standard.

Place your browser flat on your computer and try using it without lifting it off. Then pledge at least £22 (~$37 USD) on Kickstarter to get a Slimo patch as a reward. Pledge at least £39 (~$65 USD) to get a Slimo and a wireless charging base combo.

Apple Boasts 8 Hours Talk-Time with iPhone

This article was written on June 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

In a press release posted today, Apple surprised everyone with battery life details for the iPhone which is slated to ship on June 29th. Originally Apple boasted that the iPhone would feature 5 hours of talk time back in January when it was first introduced. That was a great number to start with considering how poor the battery life typically is with Smartphones, however, they have confirmed that the iPhone will in fact be capable of an impressive 8 hours of talk time.

    Additional Battery Life Details:

    • 6 hours of Internet use
    • 7 hours video playback
    • 24 hours audio playback
    • 10 days of standby

To put this into perspective, Apple included talk time data for some of their competitors.  The iPhone beat out the closest competitor, the Samsung Blackjack, by two and a half hours.  With phones like the Nokia N95, the Blackberry Curve 8300, and the Palm Treo 750, the iPhone beat their talk time by 4 hours!

    Applecompetitors

Clearly they changed something with the battery to boost the numbers like they did, but Apple hasn’t mentioned whether they started using an entirely new battery, or if better management contributed. The graph below details the changes in battery-life since January:

Another upgrade that they mentioned in the press release deals with the surface of the phone.  Steve Jobs says: “We’ve also upgraded iPhone’s entire top surface from plastic to optical-quality glass for superior scratch resistance and clarity.” All of their other competitors that were mentioned use plastic.

Come June 29th, the iPhone will be available at Apple retail stores, online stores, and at certain AT&T stores. Oh, and probably eBay too.

iOS 8 Could Simplify Notification Center, Add Better App-To-App Data Sharing, Ditch Game Center App

A new report from 9to5Mac details a number of small tweaks we could see in the upcoming iOS 8 release from Apple. As always, the blog stipulates that these are merely things that are in development or have been worked on, and won’t necessarily see introduction in iOS 8, but they could significantly change the overall experience of the OS if included. Much of what the new report from the… Read More

SoftBank’s CEO Reveals How He Brought The iPhone To Japan

SoftBanks CEO Reveals How He Brought The iPhone To JapanThe iPhone is probably one of the more desired smartphones in the world at the moment, and despite what its critics and detractors have to say about it, they have to admit that it is true to a certain level. What this also means is that carriers are more than happy, for the most part, to offer the phone on their network.

However getting the iPhone onto a network isn’t as simple as placing an order with Apple. In fact based on what we have heard in the past from carriers, usually this means buying a certain amount of phones from Apple as well as agreeing to some of Apple’s demands, like no installing of carrier bloatware on the iPhone. Campaign Calls To Boycott Apple Products Due To Use Of Toxic Chemicals

Campaign Calls To Boycott Apple Products Due To Use Of Toxic ChemicalsIn the past, Apple has gotten a fair amount of flak regarding working conditions in the factories of their partners, such as Foxconn. Apple has since made efforts to change that perception by instating rules and regulations that would ensure that their manufacturing partners adhere to certain guidelines.

In fact these guidelines extend to the use of conflict material in Apple products to ensure that certain components are not sourced from particular regions in the world. However it seems that despite Apple’s best practices to ensure that their partners follow their guidelines, there are some who feel that Apple has not done enough. (more…)

Apple Patent Describes Phone With Detachable Camera Lens

Apple Patent Describes Phone With Detachable Camera LensOne of the ways companies market their smartphones is by boasting its camera’s capabilities. To a certain extent megapixels are still used as ammunition when it comes to marketing a camera, but as we all know, megapixels don’t determine a camera’s quality and that there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Companies like Nokia have marketed their cameras to be great in low-lighting situations, while companies like Sony boasts the use of its Exmor RS sensor and G-lens. According to a recent patent by Apple, it shows the Cupertino company possibly considering the idea of a detachable camera which would undoubtedly make for a great piece of marketing. (more…)
