AT&T Memo Indicates Summer Launch for 3G iPhone

This article was written on May 07, 2008 by CyberNet.

Over the last several months, there has been a lot of buzz around the Internet regarding a 3G iPhone coming soon from Apple. We haven’t mentioned a thing about it yet because we weren’t quite convinced that it was actually going to be coming as early as some have predicted. Now we’re starting to feel a little more comfortable with the speculation, especially after seeing an internal email that was sent to all AT&T employees. Take a look (important parts are emphasized):

AT&T Mobility

Vacation Schedules

To: All Employees

Last year at this time we asked that all vacations be scheduled before June 15 or after July 15, to ensure adequate store staffing and to give everyone an equal opportunity to benefit from an exciting product launch. Thanks to your hard work, we experienced excellent sales during the mid-summer period. This year, the numbers you produced in 2007 will be hard to beat; but as a business, we must rise to the challenge, and make every effort to exceed last year’s sales results. Your management team is counting on you!

We’ll meet the challenge “head-on” by providing an exciting Summer Promotional Launch to enable your sales to soar. We again anticipate heavier than normal customer traffic in our stores, providing an excellent earning opportunity for every front line retail sales consultant (RSC) in company owned retail stores.

To ensure proper staffing during this period, Sales personnel planning to take approved time off are encouraged to schedule their vacations before June 15 or after July 12 to participate in the heavy selling period

Previously approved vacation will be allowed where voluntary rescheduling is not feasible

No additional vacation will be approved for 6/15 – 7/12

If customer traffic is manageable, there may be an opportunity to approve vacation toward the end of the period. Managers will communicate updates as they become available.

If the new 3G iPhone were to launch on June 15th, it would be two days after WWDC ended. The only problem with that date is that it happens to fall on a Sunday, and we don’t believe Apple would launch a new product on a weekend. The launch would likely come early the following week or maybe even later in the month like they did last year with the late June iPhone launch.

Now that we’ve finally mentioned the 3G iPhone for the first time, it might be worth mentioning some of the new features that it is rumored to have:

  • 3G (obviously)
  • Fully functional GPS
  • Instead of being metal, it will be a glossy black from top to bottom
  • Slightly thicker in size from current iPhone

There’s no word on what battery life would be like, but hopefully it would remain about the same as the current iPhone because that is definitely one of its best features.

iPhone Bing App Updated

iPhone Bing App UpdatedMicrosoft has just introduced a spanking new update of its Bing app, targeting iPhone users who happen to enjoy this navigational tool. This is a positive development, since it has been several months since Microsoft rolled out a revamped version for all iOS devices. What makes this particular update more special than the rest is this – it is apparently meant just for iPhone owners, and has yet to be optimized for the iPad – or maybe, never. Microsoft did mention that the new features which are introduced in the updated iPhone Bing app were all thrown into the mix because of input from their user base. Among the new additions would be a widget that boasts of a quartet of touch-friendly buttons which would enable users to “return to the homepage, conduct a voice search, conduct a text search or see your Recent searches.”

This Hearing Aid Connects to an iPhone and Adapts to Your Surroundings

For centuries, humans have been using technology to make up for their shortcomings. People missing limbs got prosthetics. People with weak hearts got pacemakers. But, at a certain point, becoming a cyborg is less like fixing something broken than it is like gaining new powers.

    iPhone Viruses Coming in February?

This article was written on October 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

iPhone Apps Apple has made iPhone and iPod Touch users extremely happy today by announcing the forthcoming Software Development Kit (SDK). In February developers will be able to get their hands on the SDK which will let them create true third-party applications without needing any hacks!

That’s right, you’ll be able to get a real instant messenger on there, and I’m sure Web 2.0 sites like Zoho will also work on iPhone apps that provide full functionality. This could end up being the nail in the coffin for devices like the Blackberry, because now business-related apps can be created.

What about viruses? Apple recognizes that is a big hurdle since their device is so powerful, and this is what they had to say about it:

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once–provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task.

We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

It will be interesting to see exactly how Apple plans to conquer the problem of viruses and malware, but it’s obvious that they are working hard to ensure that they’re criticized to the extent that Windows currently is.

I can’t wait to see what programs make their way onto the device. Will we see Firefox, Skype, VLC, and more ported over?
