While Jony Ive’s group was secretly working on the iPad, Steve Jobs was telling the public and press that Apple had no intention of releasing a tablet. “Tablets appeal to rich guys with plenty of other PCs and de- vices already,” he said publicly. But Jobs was dissembling. “Steve never lost his desire to do a tablet,” said Phil Schiller. In fact, while Jony’s design team was developing the iPhone, they were also actively working on tablets. Jobs was just waiting for the right time to bring a tablet to market.

Apple To Spend $10.5 Billion Next Year To Secure Exclusive Manufacturing Deals
Posted in: Today's ChiliOne of the tactics that Apple likes to use to edge out the competition would be to invest heavily in machinery, buying themselves an exclusive deal or locking out their competitors due to them placing many orders, but how much has Apple spent so far on creating exclusive deals for unique supply chain machinery? Well according to a report from Bloomberg, they claim that Apple has committed themselves to spending a whopping $10.5 billion in 2014 on new manufacturing technology.
The report states that the money will be going towards “equipment to polish the new iPhone 5c’s colorful plastic, laser and milling machines to carve the MacBook’s aluminum body, and testing gear for the iPhone and iPad camera lens.” Apparently the design of Apple products are so unique that unique machinery is needed in order to make it, at least that’s according to analyst, Muthuraman Ramasamy, who stated that “Apple has so much cash that they can invest in cutting-edge, world-class machinery that is typically used for aerospace and defense.”
In fact it seems that Jony Ive and his team’s influence on Apple’s products are so great that the supply chain is shaped by their needs, as opposed to them working with what they’ve got. Could this explain why Apple’s products are generally more pricier than others?

Earlier this year, before the iPhone 5s was released, we talked about a binocular adapter for the iPhone which is said to offer your smartphone a whole new way of snapping photos and recording videos. Well, the advent of the iPhone 5s would mean that a slew of new peripherals need to be developed again to cater for the latest iPhone model, and the $99.95 iPhone Binoculars would be just the thing.
Basically, this is no adapter, but rather, they are actual field binoculars which will attach to an iPhone to deliver an easy viewing and recording experience. Via the view through the eyepiece, it will be able to transfer everything it surveys to the phone’s camera lens, where it will then transform the phone into a viewfinder so that you can share the sights with friends or to snap photos of whatever action that is going on at that point in time. There will be 36mm lenses on the binoculars that deliver 8X magnification, delivering a total of a 426-foot field of view at 1,000 yards. The included phone cases will fit the iPhone 5S/5 and 4S/4, and the field glasses also double up as a pair of standard binoculars when detached.

Given that with every new generation and new piece of hardware that comes out, along with it comes new technology innovations and features that makes the newer product seem more enticing, causing users of a certain platform to want to switch to a different platform, i.e. BlackBerry to Windows Phone, Android to iPhone, and vice versa. However it looks like as far as Android users switching to iPhones, the numbers have gone up this year according to a report from the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) who claims that compared to last year, the number of Android users making the jump has increased this year.
This is based on a poll of 400 new iPhone buyers in the US who were asked which platform they were using prior to their latest purchase. As you can see in the graph above, it shows that Android switchers have increased and is at 21% for 2013, versus 16% back in 2012 with the iPhone 5, indicating a 5% jump. Of course the study does not tell us what the flip side of the coin is like, as in how many iPhone users have made the switch to Android, so it’s not necessarily all doom and gloom for Android at the moment, but what do you guys think? Any Android users make the switch to the iPhone 5s/5c this year?

Apple has witnessed significant growth in the Land of the Rising Sun. It is one of the five regions where Apple’s operating profit grew in the last fiscal year, it is also the market where Apple gets its biggest profit margins. The Wall Street Journal reports that Japan is now Apple’s fastest growing market, with Cupertino holding 37 percent of the smartphone and 50 percent of the tablet market in the country. This success comes at the expense of local manufacturers, who now face an even tougher challenge on home ground.
Apple’s margins in Japan are 15 percent higher than anywhere else in the world, the report claims, adding that the company’s sales climbed almost 30 percent during the past fiscal year alone. To put things in perspective take a look at sales growth in China, which is said to be an important market for Apple. Over the same period of time, sales grew just 13 percent in China as opposed to 30 percent in Japan. The reason for this is believed to be the company’s brand positioning, Apple’s brand value is seen equaling the likes of Burberry in Louis Vuitton. A Tokyo based analyst, Eiji Mori, claims that when in Japan choose a new mobile phone, its not about specifications or rationale, “its about owning an iPhone.” Apple has evidently gained a strong footing in Japan, one that might be a cause of concern for the likes of Sony and Sharp. It won’t trouble NEC and Panasonic anymore though, given that both companies are now out of the smartphone business.
