Back on Tuesday during the Apple iPhone unveiling event, the technology giant talked about many different features of the new iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. Among those features was a rather vague tip that the battery sizes for both of the smartphones have been increased compared to the iPhone 5. That was good news since […]
Beyond the basics, Apple has said little of how the iPhone 5s Touch ID fingerprint reader works — we mostly know that it’s inaccessible to the outside world. Thankfully, the company has shed further light on Touch ID through statements to the Wall Street Journal. To start, iPhone owners will have to unlock with a passcode if they either reboot or haven’t unlocked within 48 hours. The safeguard prevents hackers from simply biding their time while they look for a workaround, Apple says. Legitimate users will also want to keep their hands dry, as the reader doesn’t work well with fingers covered in sweat and other liquids. You won’t want to try unlocking immediately after running, then, but it’s evident that Apple already knows many of Touch ID’s real-world limitations.

For those of you who have been hanging loose with Verizon Wireless for quite a fair number of years already, I am quite sure that the days when the iPhone was not on offer by Verizon proved to be quite a sore point among subscribers. However, all of that changed in January a couple of years back, and here we are living as though the non-iPhone days at Verizon Wireless are but a distant memory. Well, having said that, Verizon Wireless has just updated their iPhone page to include the recently introduced iPhone 5S as well as iPhone 5C.
All that you can find on the Apple page can also more or less be found on Verizon’s iPhone page, and we do know that Verizon will start to accept pre-orders on both devices from this Friday onwards (September 13th, could it be an inauspicious date for those who are superstitious?), and you should expect your doorstep to hold a parcel with the iPhone 5C or iPhone 5S inside on September 20th. Needless to say, pricing details remain the same during its announcement, with the 16GB Apple iPhone 5S going for $199.99 with a signed two-year contract, while a 16GB iPhone 5C will be $100 more affordable with a similar length contract.

Come 20th of September, Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C to a number of different countries around the world, and presumably they will be shipping millions of iPhones. So how is it that with such a high profile device, especially when numbered in the millions, manages to make its way across countries without being noticed? Well according to the folks at Bloomberg, they have managed to get an insider look on how the entire process is handled.
“The process starts in China, where pallets of iPhones are moved from factories in unmarked containers accompanied by a security detail. The containers are then loaded onto trucks and shipped via pre-bought airfreight space, including on old Russian military transports. The journey ends in stores where the world’s biggest technology company makes constant adjustments based on demand, said people who have worked on Apple’s logistics and asked not to be identified because the process is secret.”
Indeed it sounds like quite a secretive, and almost military-like operation! The process was reportedly designed by Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook. If anything it is pretty impressive how Apple manages all of that but what do you guys think? Do you reckon other tech giants such as Samsung operates in a similar manner?

We discuss this, TechCrunch writer Greg Kumparak’s birthday, and more on this week’s episode of the TC Gadgets Podcast, featuring John Biggs, Matt Burns, Jordan Crook, Chris Velazco, Romain Dillet and myself, Darrell Etherington.
We invite you to enjoy our weekly podcasts every Friday at 3pm Eastern and noon Pacific. And feel free to check out the TechCrunch Gadgets Flipboard magazine right here, as well as the TechCrunch Droidcast.
