iPhone 4 drop test yields results (video)

There’s been a lot of fuss about the iPhone 4’s Gorilla Glass “custom glass” comparable in strength to sapphire crystal but 30 times harder than plastic. Sounds incredible, right? But make no mistake, that front glass panel will still break if dropped. Ok, it took four deliberate attempts to accomplish what you see above but it still happened. Bottom line: like any cellphone, you’ll have to worry about more than just scratches. See the destruction after the break.

iMovie hits iTunes App Store, only for iPhone 4 (update)

You may not have an iPhone 4 yet — unless you lucked out on delivery, you’re probably still waiting in line — but if you did receive Cupertino’s latest opinion polarizing handset, you might have noticed it doesn’t come with a tool to edit all the 720p footage of jealous friends that you just shot. Thankfully that can be remedied with a portrait of President Lincoln, as iMovie for iPhone just went live — head on over to the App Store and drop your $4.99.

Update: Oddly enough, we’re not actually seeing iMovie in the App Store on our iPhone 4 — only in the desktop client.

[Thanks, Joel]

iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G screens go head-to-head under the microscope

We got up pretty close to the iPhone 4‘s retina display in our review, but we can’t say we got quite as close as PhD candidates Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt of Penn State University, who have kindly provided us with some images of the screen under a microscope (along with an iPhone 3G for comparison). According to their measurements, the iPhone 3G’s pixels measure 13 x 40 microns, while the iPhone 4’s measure 6.5 x 20 microns, which adds up to exactly four times as many pixels. As impressive as sounds that sounds, however, it’s the pictures that really tell the story — hit up the gallery below to check them out.

Poll: is your iPhone 4 retina display seeing yellow spots? (update: losing bars in the hand?)

Out, damned spot! out, I say! One; two: why, then, ’tis time to do ‘t. Hell is murky! Fie, my lord, fie! Reports are coming in from some of those lucky early iPhone 4 users that there may exist a not-so-lucky yellow coloration in the bottom right corner of the IPS LCD. We haven’t seen this ourselves on any new iPhones, but maybe you’ve had different experiences. Tell us, is your iPhone 4 seeing yellow?

Update: As a number of readers have pointed out, there seems to be an issue with how many bars are displayed on screen — perhaps even a correlation to how it’s being held in the hand. According to Walt Mossberg’s review, Apple has acknowledged the issue as something that has to do with “the way the bars are presented, not the actual ability to make a call,” and that a fix is forthcoming. Indeed, as noted in our review, we’ve had “far, far fewer dropped calls than we experienced on our 3GS.” We’re not seeing very many videos showing more dropped call, but the bar change is interesting. Still, to be sure, we’re adding another poll.

Update 2: Our iPhone 4 purchased in Japan has a pale yellow bar along then entire bottom edge. Picture after the break.

iPhone 4 launch day line watch (updated)

From the London store

Welcome to the latest installment of our annual tradition: the iPhone launch day queue experience in pictorial form. London’s getting the party started early (not as early as some, admittedly) with a sizable crowd turning the corner from the Apple Store at Regent Street, but we’ll keep this post updated with imagery from all over the place. Wouldn’t mind if you helped us out with a few of your own pics, either. You know where to send them in by now, and once you’ve done that, feel free to slide past the break to see how everyone else is doing it.

Update: Now with reports from San Francisco!

Update 2:
NY joins the fray!

Update 3: We added some of the more interesting reader-submitted stories.

Update 4: Reports from Palo Alto and San Jose, California!

Droid X vs. iPhone 4… hang out!

So, these aren’t exactly the most similar phones ever. The Droid X has Android, a high res 4.3-inch screen, Verizon, and a hump in back. The iPhone 4 has iOS, a higher res 3.5-inch screen, and some of the slimmest smartphone dimensions ever. Sure, they’re both flagship handsets for their respective teams, but we’d really rather live in a world where Droid X and iPhone 4 hang out after work for drinks than one where they stab each other in their silicon hearts. Sure, there’d be a bit of banter, but isn’t there always between friends?

Apple: white iPhone 4 not available until second half of July, ‘more challenging to manufacture than expected’

Well, it looks like you can put those conspiracy theories to rest… or can you? Apple has just put out an official statement on the nowhere to be found white iPhone 4, which it now says will not be available until the “second half of July.” What’s the holdup? Apparently, the white models have “proven more challenging to manufacture than expected” — but don’t worry, Apple assures us that “availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.” Complete statement (which you’ve mostly just read) is as follows:

Statement by Apple on White iPhone 4

White models of Apple’s new iPhone(R) 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

Yes, you can certainly scratch the iPhone 4 (updated with more photos)

Well, this is not encouraging. The photo you’re seeing above is our leader Joshua’s iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on the back of the phone. While we don’t have any better photos of it at the moment, Josh told us that they’re hard to see unless in bright light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made of Gorilla Glass. We’ll get some better photos for you as soon as humanly possible.

Update: We should note that while iFixit has said that the new iPhone’s front panel is made of Gorilla Glass (and they tend to be right about these things), the material on the back of the phone has not been positively identified, though it is also a hardened glass.

Update 2: We’ve added three higher quality photos after the break, and seen the scratch with our own eyes. It’s what we would call “incredibly minor,” not visible at all dead on, but in bright light at an angle… well see for yourself if the photos.

Tesco Mobile announces cheapest UK iPhone 4 tariffs yet

You’re not going to believe this, but someone actually bothered to turn up to the iPhone 4 launch with a bit of competitive spirit. Tesco Mobile, an MVNA riding atop O2’s network, has busted out its idea of what represents good value for iPhone lovers’ money, and it has put everyone else to shame. 1GB of data and unlimited texts come as standard (seems like O2’s network can handle the load after all). Two 12-month options are available, at £20 ($29) per month for 250 minutes and £35 ($52) per month for 750 minutes, accompanied by the big spender platter of unlimited minutes and an almost free 16GB iPhone 4 for those willing to spend £45 ($66) over two years. It’s all great news for Brits, and you can see exactly how it compares to the big networks in our comprehensive, chart-intensive breakdown right here.

What happened to the white iPhone 4?

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but Best Buy has just gotten around to confirming that it won’t have any stock of the white iPhone 4 come launch day on Thursday — the same situation that both AT&T and Apple itself are in. For many buyers, it’s not a big deal — either they don’t mind the black version, or they’d planned on buying black anyway — but for others, this is putting a significant crimp on the launch day festivities. We reached out to Apple and got this:

“There is tremendous excitement for the new iPhone 4 and we are working to get as many of them into the hands of customers as possible. At launch, we have the black models available for purchase and we will be adding the white models as quickly as we can.”

In other words, they’re not revealing much of anything — okay, scratch that, they’re not revealing anything at all about its mystery-shrouded delay, the circumstances behind it, or how long we can expect to wait. So here’s our question: what, exactly, happened to the white iPhone 4?
