The Anvil Problem

Over a decade ago I was a happy man. In about 2002 I bought an Archos Jukebox. It was 6GB monstrosity, clad in metal and full of huge batteries, and it contained a clicking, whirring 2.5-inch hard drive. I used it to listen to music and even hacked it to run a home-brew operating system complete with games and media controls. For a while I was quite content with my crazy MP3 player and, although… Read More

iPhone Viruses Coming in February?

This article was written on October 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

iPhone Apps Apple has made iPhone and iPod Touch users extremely happy today by announcing the forthcoming Software Development Kit (SDK). In February developers will be able to get their hands on the SDK which will let them create true third-party applications without needing any hacks!

That’s right, you’ll be able to get a real instant messenger on there, and I’m sure Web 2.0 sites like Zoho will also work on iPhone apps that provide full functionality. This could end up being the nail in the coffin for devices like the Blackberry, because now business-related apps can be created.

What about viruses? Apple recognizes that is a big hurdle since their device is so powerful, and this is what they had to say about it:

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once–provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task.

We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

It will be interesting to see exactly how Apple plans to conquer the problem of viruses and malware, but it’s obvious that they are working hard to ensure that they’re criticized to the extent that Windows currently is.

I can’t wait to see what programs make their way onto the device. Will we see Firefox, Skype, VLC, and more ported over?

Clementine is a Free Cross-Platform Music Player

This article was written on July 08, 2011 by CyberNet.

Clementine music player

Many of you have likely heard of Amarok which is a popular cross-platform music player, and Clementine is a cross platform player that is benefiting from its open source nature. To me it has a clean interface the features people are looking for, such as iPhone syncing. It also includes a slew of other features most people will never even use, such as controlling the player with a Wii Remote.

Here are some of the other features they highlight:

  • Search and play your local music library.
  • Listen to internet radio from Last.fm, SomaFM, Magnatune, Jamendo and Icecast.
  • Create smart playlists and dynamic playlists.
  • Tabbed playlists, import and export M3U, XSPF, PLS and ASX.
  • CUE sheet support.
  • Visualisations from projectM.
  • Lyrics and artist biographies and photos.
  • Transcode music into MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, FLAC or AAC.
  • Edit tags on MP3 and OGG files, organise your music.
  • Fetch missing tags from MusicBrainz.
  • Download missing album cover art from Last.fm.
  • Cross-platform – works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
  • Native desktop notifications on Linux (libnotify) and Mac OS X (Growl).
  • Remote control using a Wii Remote, MPRIS or the command-line.
  • Copy music to your iPod, iPhone, MTP or mass-storage USB player.
  • Queue manager.

Apple Q1 2014 Earnings Announced

apple--logo

Apple’s fiscal 2014 first quarter ended on December 28, 2013 and soon after trading closed for the day, the Apple Q1 2014 earnings were officially announced. The company had a record quarter as far as iPhone and iPad sales are concerned, even if it didn’t exactly meet Wall Street’s expectations. An all-time quarterly record was established in Q1 2014 as Apple sold 51 million iPhones and 26 million iPads. During the same quarter last year, 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads were sold. Mac sales topped 4.8 million, as opposed to 4.1 million in the year-ago quarter.

iPod Sales Are On The Decline

ipodsalesBack in the day, Apple’s iPod was one of the company’s best selling products. In a way it was even a fashion statement thanks to the white earphones that easily identified the wearer as an iPod owner, to the extent where other companies started to issue white earphones with their products as well. However fast forward to today, the iPod is hardly garnering the same amount of attention or excitement as it once did. After all our phones and tablets are just as capable of playing songs and performing more functions, so why would we need an additional device just for that, right? To that extent even Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, acknowledged that the iPod is a declining business.

Speaking at Apple’s quarterly earnings call, Cook was quoted as saying, “The way we look at it, our business is a sell-through point of view less iPod — all of us have known for some time that iPod is a declining business.” In fact the graph above shows that sales of the iPod have been on the decline. Apple has yet to announce any changes to their iPod lineup, apart from introducing a new color option for the iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle. In fact the iPod classic, the iPod with the largest storage, has not been updated in over four years. We’re not sure what this means for the future of the iPod product line, but what do you guys think? Will Apple eventually discontinue it or will they just maintain it with slight improvements here and there over the next few years?

Man Buys iPod From Target And Gets Box Stuffed With Erasers, Twice

Man Buys iPod From Target And Gets Box Stuffed With Erasers, Twice

The days leading up to Christmas are certainly lucrative for retailers, as last minute shoppers look to purchase gifts that they intend to give out. Jim Nevarde, a resident of Mission Beach, California, was one such individual who shopped at Target for an iPod Classic that he wanted to give his wife on Christmas. He purchased the iPod from the Mira Mesa Target and when the box was opened on Christmas morning, it was found to be stuffed with erasers and index cards, there was no iPod in the box.

Nevarde waited until Thursday to return $293 worth of erasers and index cards. He went to another Target, one in the Midway area, and lucked out as the staffed agreed to replace the iPod. This time, Nevarde told a store clerk to open the box so that he could check the contents before leaving and everyone’s utter surprise, that box was full of erasers as well, the only difference being that the colors weren’t the same as those found in the first box. This collosal coincidence certainly raises a few questions. When approached for comment by 10News, Apple redirected to Target. The retailer said in a statement that it is taking this incident “very seriously,” but at this point in time they don’t have any additional information to reveal.
