On a quiet street just off of Nashville’s historic Music Row, a dedicated team of more than 100 researchers are developing software systems that may very well revolutionize the modern world. From cutting edge cyber-security tech designed to defend America’s most critical networks to computer-learning algorithms that could all but eliminate airline crashes, Vanderbilt’s Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) is making our Internet of Things safer, better, stronger, and more resilient.
HTC’s 5.9-inch One max is comparatively modest when it comes to the oversized smartphone horserace; it’s actually dwarfed by Sony’s monstrous Xperia Z Ultra. Still, if your hands are big enough to accommodate the One max’s bulk and you’re a Verizon subscriber, today’s the day you can call it your own. The Big Red operator’s offering the device for $300 with any new two-year agreement, or for $25 monthly installments on its Edge upgrade plan. Verizon’s even bundled in a special SIM that’s “ISIS-ready” so you can take advantage of the carrier’s contactless payment (read: Google Wallet) alternative. The One Max offers mostly everything we love about the OG One it shares a heritage with, just in a heftier metallic chassis and with an oddly-placed fingerprint scanner. Sure there’s plenty you can do with a big ‘ol screen, but in this case, we’d argue the size of your hand matters more.

Coming off a rather long testing phase, Isis Mobile Wallet has launched nationwide today. The digital wallet service is arriving with support from three of the big four US carriers and basically means users will be able to make mobile payments with their NFC-equipped smartphone. The catch of course, having a supported device and finding […]
Mobile payments solution Isis is backed by three of the largest mobile carriers in the U.S., Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Isis said back in July that it would commence nationwide rollout later this year, and it finally has. The service had already been under field testing at more than 4,000 locations in Salt Lake City and Austin. Isis Mobile Wallet is yet another way subscribers of these three carriers can now use to pay for services and goods.
To mark its nationwide roll out, Isis is offering a few freebies to new users, who can get three free drinks from select vending machines by using Isis and My Coke Rewards. Jamba Juice had pledged 1 million free smoothies for Isis uses, who are also eligible to receive 20 percent discount (up to $200) on purchases made from an American Express Serve account through Isis Mobile Wallet. Those who want to use this service would require an Android smartphone that’s compatible with Isis, each carrier has specific models available, and they’ll also need an “enhanced” SIM card. Once the smartphone and the SIM are ready, users just need to download the Isis Mobile Wallet app from Google Play Store to start using the service. Existing Chase or American Express cards can be used for purchases straightaway, those who don’t have any would need to put money in a prepaid American Express Serve account through their debit or credit card. Isis has several nationwide partners which includes Radio Shack, Walgreens, Macy’s, CVS and more.

Isis, the NFC-powered mobile payment app
Three of the biggest mobile carriers in the U.S., Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, are backing a mobile payments solution called Isis. Based on NFC technology, the solution allows people to pay when required at participating locations by simply tapping their smartphones. Last year, a trial was launched in Salt Lake City and Austin, and Isis plans to roll out across the country by the end of this year. Unfortunately, it has lost one of its primary banking partners, Capital One.
The bank says that their pilot tests with Isis will soon be ended, however it does say that it will “continue to engage with Isis on the future of mobile payments.” It wouldn’t make sense for Capital One to pull out of the trial phase and rejoin the other banking partners after the nationwide launch. The other partners include Barclayscard, Chase and American Express. Isis is capable of working with Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Android smartphones. iPhones are left out of the fray because Apple’s smartphones don’t come with NFC technology. Isis did say last month that iPhone support will be coming soon, many thought it was a subtle hint that the new iPhones will have NFC, but the new iPhones have been announced last week and they most certainly do not have the required technology.

Three of the biggest U.S. carriers, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, are backing a mobile payments solution called Isis. The solution is currently being tested at more than 4,000 locations in Austin and Salt Lake City. The company said last month that national rollout of the service will begin this year. T-Mobile stores are now receiving Isis ready SIM cards ahead of the nationwide rollout.
Some of these SIM cards are said to be pre-packaged with the Samsung Galaxy S4. Isis is currently on track for nationwide launch later this year, out of the top 100 retailers 25 have already jumped on-board. Isis will work with American Express, Chase Freedom and Capital One credit cards. The app will store credit cards, loyalty cards and offers. NFC technology plays a pivotal role, users will be able to make payments at terminals and registers by simply swiping their phones. The Isis app is only available for Android right now, seeing as how there’s no iPhone out yet that comes with NFC built-in. Isis said recently that iPhone support is coming soon. The next generation iPhone that Apple is expected to release next month is said to have NFC technology, but there’s no confirmation about that just yet. [Image via TmoNews]

We’d hardly call Isis a juggernaut, but the would-be Google Wallet-slayer is certainly building steam. After convincing American Express to back it in a nationwide rollout, Chase has decided to hop on the expansion train as well. The mobile payment launch partner is clearly quite happy with how pilot programs in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah went. Soon enough holders of Chase Freedom, Sapphire and Slate cards, along with those special people in possession of a JPMorgan Palladium card will be able to load their accounts into the Isis Mobile Wallet app and tap to pay at retail locations across the nation. Of course, if you’re part of the one percent, walking around with your Palladium card, chances are you probably don’t wander into to Walgreens to pick up your own Gold Bond Medicated Foot Powder very often anyway.
Isis is gearing up to expand its Mobile Wallet service nationwide in the coming months, but its plans don’t end there. The company has just announced that it’s teaming up with American Express to bring the latter’s Serve platform to Isis Mobile Wallet. Serve account holders will be able to make use of most of the features they already expect from Amex, like loading cash to their accounts, paying bills electronically and adding funds via direct deposit. By joining up with Isis, Serve is now unlocking the Mobile Wallet’s capabilities, like NFC-powered payments at participating retail locations. Though Isis is currently limited to Austin and Salt Lake City, the company — now with Amex on its side — hopes to reach customers coast to coast before the year is out, though we don’t have a specific date for availability just yet.
