Jaguar Project 7 crafts one-off single-seater racer from F-Type

Jaguar’s F-Type is arguably enough sports car for most, but that hasn’t stopped the British big cat company from crafting a one-off, single seater racer variant, Jaguar Project 7, to take to the track at Goodwood this year. Described as a “project study” led by Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum, Project 7 re-clads the F-Type in a new aluminum body with a bespoke carbon-fiber aero-kit, borrowing stylistic hints from the classic D-type, but throwing a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine tuned for 550 PS and 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

Jag_Project7_100712_06

Set to show itself in public for the first time on July 12, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013, Project 7 is obviously related to the F-Type drop-top. Closer examination shows the extent of the changes, however: the new front splitter, side-skirts, and rear diffuser, for instance, along with a new front bumper and a lowered windshield.

The rear fairing, perhaps the most obvious change, is the biggest D-type homage, including a rollover hoop and leading back to a fixed rear spoiler. The C-X16 concept – which basically previewed the design direction for the F-Type – loans its carbon-fiber and aluminum wing mirrors.

Jag_Project7_100712_09

Inside, the single occupant gets a racing harness, composite bucket seat – 30mm lower than in the F-Type – and lashings of quilted leather, along with machined aluminum gearchange paddles and more carbon-fiber slotted into the dashboard, wheel, and elsewhere. A matching helmet docks into the place where the passenger used to sit, with its own harness.

Jaguar’s engineers have teased a further 55PS and 55NM out of the V8 from the donor car, pushing 502 lb-ft of torque through the eight-speed gearbox. That’s good for 186 MPH (electronically limited), the company claims.

“It’s pure Jaguar” Callum concludes, though since it’s only ever going to be a one-off, that purity will never find its way to forecourts. Instead, crank up the volume and check out Project 7 in action in the video below.

AMD’s Opteron X-series targets Intel Atom for the microserver CPU market

AMD unveils a pair of Opteron CPU's targeting microservers, Intel's Atom S chips

AMD might not be able to keep up (down?) with Intel in the CPU power consumption race, so it’s taking another tack with the new Opteron X-series: horsepower. It just announced the Opteron X1150 and X2150 64-bit processors for microservers, part of the Jaguar-codenamed family of CPUs arriving in the next-gen Xbox One and Sony PS4 consoles. Thanks to its ultra-low power 6-watt Atom S1200 chips, Intel excels in the low-power server market, and at 9W and 11W respectively (minimum), AMD’s CPUs consume considerably more juice. But AMD is pitching them as a better solution overall, thanks to those four cores (compared to two in the Atom), integrated AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics on the X2150 model, support for 32GB of RAM and integrated SATA ports. AMD’s chips are pricier, though, at $64 (X1150) or $99 (X2150) compared to $54 for Intel’s Atom S1200 (all in quantities of 1,000). To top it off, Intel has new 64-bit Atom SoCs coming soon promising even lower power consumption — possibly leaving AMD to play catch-up again.

Jaguar F-Type coupe unofficially previewed (but you’ll have to wait until 2014)

Jaguar’s striking F-Type may already be wowing drivers as a convertible months out from launch, but it’s taken some premature patent digging to see exactly what the eventual coupe version might look like. The car company has previously conceded that a hard-top F-Type will eventually reach forecourts, but has played it coy on how close to the original C-X16 concept it might be. Fortunately for us, while Jaguar’s designers may be tight-lipped, its lawyers are a little more open.

jaguar_f-type_coupe_patent_1

A cluster of renders expected to closely resemble the final coupe have been dug up as part of a design patent Jaguar filed ahead of the car’s expected 2014 release, Germany car site Auto Motor & Sport reports. Things don’t deviate too far from the C-X16, thankfully, with a tapering rear window that notches in crisply with the distinctive light clusters.

jaguar_f-type_coupe_patent_2

It’ll be a handsome beast in profile, too, if the patent CGI is anything to go by. One of the concerns had been how the relatively flat trunk lid of the convertible F-Type might work with the extra metal of a coupe, but Jaguar’s design team has handled that well.

By starting out with a drop-top and only bringing a coupe on later, Jaguar claimed it was making sure both would have the sort of on-the-road dynamics that drivers expect from a two-seater. Curb weight for the coupe isn’t known, but given the car company opted for a fabric hood rather than a folding metal roof – arguing that it helped keep the center of gravity low – there may not be the common difference between the two versions.

Jag_F-TYPE_V8_V6_studio_image_1_260912_LowRes

As well as the photos, the car site also claims to have heard that Jaguar will be offering a different engine option alongside the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and supercharged 5.0-liter V8 already announced. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, the new engine is borrowed from the Range Rover Evoque – albeit with some fettling involved in the process – and should help bring the cost of entry to F-Type ownership down to less than the $69,000 starting point that preorders opened at.

Jaguar stokes F-Type Desire with Ridley Scott mini-movie

It’s been a while since we talked about Jaguar’s short film called Desire. The first time Jaguar talked about its short film, which is basically an extended commercial for its new F-Type, was back in November of 2012. At the time, all we knew was that the movie will prominently feature the new F-Type and actor Damian Lewis.

JAGUAR DAMIAN LEWIS

If you don’t recognize the name Damian Lewis, he is the actor in the popular cable TV show Homeland. He also had a show on network television in the US previously called Life. Jaguar has been talking up its short film Desire starring Lewis, Spanish actor Jordi Molla, and an American actress named Shannyn Sossamon.

If you like movies, you might recognize Molla from his performance as a bad guy in Knight and Day, Columbiana, and Bad Boys II among others. Jaguar debuted Desire for the first time in London at The 02 after the opening press conference for the film festival. The movie is about 13 1/2 min. long, and is suitable for work.

It follows Lewis as he’s on his way to deliver a red convertible F-Type to its owner. When he stops to fuel up, the action begins as a woman tries to steal his car and we eventually learn she is the wife of the man he is supposed to deliver the vehicle to. I won’t give away the entire plot of the film, but it’s definitely entertaining and worth the 13 min. it takes to watch.

Jaguar offers pricing details on new XKR-S GT and more

Over the years, I’ve seen a number of Jaguar sports cars and luxury vehicles, and none of them really jumped out as something I would like to own. I thought the new F-type was a good-looking vehicle, it just didn’t have anything about it that made me want one. Not too long ago, a new Jaguar sports car turned up called the XKR-S GT, and I want one incredibly bad.

xkrs-gt

This is the first time I can honestly say that about any Jaguar, and naturally it’s incredibly expensive meaning I’ll never own one and will likely never even see one on the streets. Jaguar has been offering some of the details on the XKR-S GT, but one key fact that we didn’t know was exactly how much it would cost. That little factoid is now known.

Jaguar has officially announced that the 2014 XKR-S GT will cost $174,000 including destination and delivery. That much money gets you a very impressive car with good looks and a supercharged 550 hp V-8 engine. At first glance, it may seem a bit odd with canards on the front in a massive wing on the back.

This car is rather like any other purpose built racing car in that aerodynamic needs are more important than how those canards and massive wing might look to some people. The special aerodynamic bits for the car allow it to generate 320 pounds of downforce. Only 30 cars will be built from North America with 25 coming to the US and five going to Canada. Jaguar has also announced that the XJR Standard wheelbase will sell for $116,000 with the long wheelbase version starting at $119,000.

Jaguar teases new XJR sedan

Jaguar has been working hard to bring a more sporting image to the brand over the last several months. The automaker has unveiled some incredibly attractive cars over the last year including the 550 hp XFR-S and the new F-Type convertible. Jag is set to unveil another high-performance car model at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER XJR

At the New York International Auto Show Jaguar will add a new vehicle to its R performance line. The show will mark the global debut of the 2014 Jaguar XJR Sedan. Jaguar is holding off on the full details about this impressive vehicle until the auto show kicks off.

For now, all we get is the single teaser image you can see above and a few basic specifications for the vehicle. Jaguar is saying that the XJR will be the highest performance XJ sedan it offers. The vehicle will feature a 550 hp engine and a host of other modifications.

In addition to performance modifications, Jaguar says that the vehicle will also be an “extraordinary opulent machine.” Jag promises more than expected levels of interior luxury for buyers lucky enough to own one of these vehicles. The XJR will also get other modifications to the steering, suspension, and brakes to go along with the extra power. Pricing and other details should be offered when the auto show kicks off.

Sony details PlayStation 4 specs: 8-core AMD ‘Jaguar’ CPU, 6X Blu-ray

Sony details PlayStation 4 specs 8core AMD 'Jaguar' CPU, 8X Bluray,

So we didn’t see the actual PlayStation 4 console on stage at Sony’s press event tonight, but that doesn’t mean we can’t know what’s inside it. A press release reveals that the PS4’s PC-like configuration will include an 8-core 64-bit x86 “Jaguar” CPU built by AMD, with a Radeon GPU comprised of 18 “compute units” capable of cranking out 1.84 TFLOPS to process graphics and more. Its Blu-ray drive — yes, it will still have one of those — spins at a brisk 6X (8X for DVDs) and as mentioned on stage, it packs 8GB of unified GDDR5 RAM capable of 176GB/sec of bandwidth. 802.11n WiFi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI, optical out and even a legacy analog AV out make up the inputs and outputs, although the potential amounts of storage are still unspecified.

Also mentioned are the new software features, which include long-awaited additions like cross-game chat, and PSN Sony Entertainment Network accounts can now connect to Facebook. Other details we’ve already heard plenty about, like its instant-on “suspend mode”, preloading of content, cloud gaming and shared game experiences. There are still many unknowns about Sony’s next game console, get filled in on the facts as they are after the break.

Jaguar XFR-S revealed: This big cat has 550HP claws

Jaguar has pulled the wraps off of its XFR-S sports sedan, the big cat company’s 186mph take on tightening up the luxobarge until your passengers squeak like field-mice. Teased last week as the fastest and most powerful four-door from Jaguar ever, the XFR-S made its debut at the LA Auto Show 2012, using a 5-liter supercharged V8 engine with 550PS good for a 0-60mph dash in 4.4s. However, Jaguar also says the XFR-S shouldn’t make too great an impact in your eco-credentials, with the new car putting out the same emissions and fuel consumption figures as its XRF sibling.

Of course, when you’re basing your numbers on what’s already an impressive sports sedan, we’re not talking tree-hugging territory. The XFR-S puts out 270g/km in CO2 emissions and manages 18mpg (US), the price you pay for pushing 502lb/ft of torque through an 8-speed Quickshift auto transmission and down through wider 20-inch forged alloy wheels with bespoke Pirelli tires.

That means not only will the XFR-S go in a straight line very, very fast, but it can deliver some drifting-style entertainment in the corners, as Jaguar’s official video shows. New suspension makes for a 30-percent increase in steering precision, and there’s an electronic differential and reprogrammed Dynamic Stability Control to deliver more of the road sensation to the driver. Corner Recognition can track when you’re cornering and make sure you’re in the right gear for the best exit, and 380mm front/376mm rear disc brakes bring things to a halt.

Jaguar XFR-S video:

Lashings of carbon fiber both outside and in, extended side sills, aeroblade moldings behind the front wheels, and a bootlid spoiler help distinguish the XFR-S’ appearance, along with gloss black trim replacing what would be chrome on the regular car. Lift is reduced by 68-percent, helped by new air channeling underneath. Jaguar will offer five color options: blue, white, grey, red, and black.

Inside, there’s charcoal leather with carbon-effect leather highlights exclusive to the R-S range, along with actual carbon fiber detailing and dark aluminum trim. A 380W Meridian 12-speaker audio system is standard, but can be upgraded to an 18-speaker, 825W system.

Unsurprisingly, this sort of performance doesn’t come cheap, though our initial guesstimates were happily too far on the rich side. Jaguar will offer just 100 of the 2014 XFR-S in the US come the summer of 2013, priced from $99,000, while the car will be from £79,995 in the UK.

Damien Lewis stars in Desire short film for Jaguar

Jaguar has given up some details on a short film starring Damien Lewis of Homeland fame. The short film is called Desire and is being created by Jaguar in association with Ridley Scott Associates. The short film is set to be released in early 2013.

Jordi Molla will play the villain of the short film. Desire will also feature Shannyn Sossamon as the female lead. The short film will begin shooting on location in the Chilean desert at the beginning of December. Interestingly, Jaguar will allow viewers to follow the filming of the movie offering an insider’s view of the set and the filming process all the way through production.

The movie will have a soundtrack written by senior songwriter Lana Delray with an exclusive track called Burning Desire inspired by the new Jaguar F-Type. The movie follows a man named Clark who delivers cars for a living. Clark runs into trouble after he meets a young woman in the middle of the desert.

The film was directed by Adam Smith and is described as a story of betrayal, retribution, passion, and greed. It sounds like the film is basically a long commercial for the new Jaguar F-Type two-seat convertible, which is powered by a V8 engine and starts at $69,000.
