We knew the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit NTT DoCoMo at some point this summer, and now we’ve got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently passed through the FCC, a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh a reminder of one that never ventured outside Japan.

We enjoyed our short time with Panasonic’s new mirrorless G5 in our hands-on last month, even if it was a little on the porky side. And, if you hail from the Land of the Rising Sun and had your heart set on one of these 16-megapixel shooters, Panny’s announced you’ll get your chance from September 13th. We’re getting dangerously close to missing the stateside launch target of August, but where the US website is showing the G5 as unreleased, availability on Amazon tells a different story. We’re reaching out for confirmation on that — as well as pricing — and will update should we hear more.

If you’re worried about the safety of your valuables, or are just looking for some extra storage, check out the Clopen shelf by Torafu Architects. The skinny shelf contains a secret, hidden drawer that allows you to hide your valuables away from prying eyes.
Clopen is constructed from aluminum parts, but it’s made to look like it’s natural wood from the outside. They added sliced veneer to a thin structure, creating extra space between the two boards, which can be opened by not just a normal key, but a special magnetic one. Once opened, a secret 23mm thick drawer appears, so it won’t be able to store much, but passports, money, etc, can be stashed away from nosy visitors.
There’s no mention on how much it costs, but the shelf entered production last month, so it should be available soon, at least in Japan.

If a wireless light bulb wasn’t quite the Jetson’s style future you were hoping for, perhaps Panasonic‘s planned expansion of its smart home appliances will better scratch that itch. From next month, there’ll be an Android app to let you remotely operate appliances, view energy savings and program settings via NFC. Hardware-wise, the electronics giant is introducing connected air conditioners, refrigerators, washer-dryers as well as smaller devices such as blood pressure monitors and calorie meters. Along with remote control, there appears to be some supportive cloud-based services too, such as reporting device faults to customer service and generating reports (from the healthcare products). When can you get a taste of the future? September 25th if you live in Orbit City Japan. As for the rest of the world? We’ll just have to be patient.

Nintendo handhelds are no strangers to new coats of paint — or Pokemon, for that matter — and now the firm is readying a Japan-exclusive Pikachu Yellow 3DS XL (officially the LL for locals). The brightly colored clamshell features a white interior and the electric rodent’s visage on its lid with his tail trailing onto the underside. Priced at ¥18,900 (roughly $238), the portable will only be available at Pokemon Center stores throughout the Land of the Rising Sun on September 15th for those who pre-order between August 25 and its release. Gamers in North America may not be able to snap up the uniquely hued system, but this weekend’s launch of the 3DS XL in red and blue could provide a small measure of consolation.
