Kisai Rorschach ePaper Watch: Blot O’clock

The Kisai Rorschach is the newest watch from Tokyoflash, maker of timepieces that are intentionally bad at presenting the time. The display looks similar to the ink blots used in the eponymous test, but it’s actually easy to decipher. The top right shows the hour and the bottom left shows the minutes. The other two symbols are just mirror images.

The watch has three difficulty modes. Why? Because Tokyoflash. From what I can tell changing the difficulty doesn’t change how you read the display, it just switches to hard-to-read symbols for the numbers. The date and alarm settings are also displayed in the same manner.

Because the watch uses an ePaper display, Tokyoflash added a power-saving sleep mode to the watch.  As you may know an ePaper or e-ink display does not consume power if it’s just showing a static image. So in sleep mode the watch will only display one symbol, which will be different depending on what day it is.

Tokyoflash even made a fan video to promote the watch, starring none other than The Watchmen‘s Rorschach. Is it still a fan video if you’re promoting a product? Hmmm.

I wish they didn’t use such a tacky font to print “Rorschach” on the display. Other than that I think it’s a neat design. You can order the watch from Tokyoflash for $179 (USD).

Super Mario 3D World Invades Japans McDonalds Happy Meal Toys Set

McDonald’s may be considering 3D-printed Happy Meal toys, but the only way we’ll accept this move to 3D printing is if the toys are based on Japanese Happy Meal toys, such as the toys that will be available for the next few weeks. (more…)

After Two Years of Nuclear Crises, Japan Opens Its Biggest Solar Park

This month, Japanese electronics company Kyocera launched the country’s largest solar plant. The facility can power 22,000 homes—and, maybe more importantly, it poses no risk of melting down, injuring workers, or spewing radioactive water into the Pacific ocean.

Toshiba’s new Kira Ultrabook promises 22 hours of use on a single charge

Toshiba's new Kira Ultrabook promises 22 hours on a single charge

We praised Toshiba’s last flagship Ultrabook for its brilliant screen and speedy boot-up time, but the company’s newest Kirabook has a notable new feature — an estimated 22 hours of battery life. Intel’s new Haswell chips may have shifted our expectations of what we expect laptops can deliver battery-wise, but almost running a whole day remains an impressive feat. That’s Toshiba’s claim for its new Dynabook KIRA V654, which sidesteps touch compatibility on its 13-inch 1,366 x 768 resolution screen to add to the battery savings and weighs in at just 1.12kg. Alongside an additional high-resolution model (2,560 x 1,440), if you simply must have swipeable screens on your Windows 8 machine, there’s also the similarly-sized Dynabook Kira V834, although that model will only manage a paltry 14 hours of work and / or play. (We kid.)

The two machines will launch in Japan on 20th November, with the touch-capable V834 starting at 153,000 yen ($1,530), while the endurance-specialized V634 will start at 144,000 yen (roughly $1,446). As is often the way with these made-in-Japan PCs, there’s no word on whether the rest of the world will get to see either model yet, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything from Toshiba.

These animals unbelievably made from tissue paper are so fun

In what might be the most creative use of tissue ever, Fuyu Arai created this wonderful stop motion animation video for Nepia, a Japanese tissue paper company. It shows different animals like birds, dogs, kangaroos, frogs, etc. being formed through just tissue paper. The animation is so fluid that you almost believe that these tissue animals are alive.

Tepco Removes First Fukushima Fuel Rods, Finally Gets Something Right

TEPCO workers successfully removed the first fuel rods from the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant and transferred them into portable casks on Monday. Those who have been following the follies of the power company should be pleased that a meltdown did not occur.

‘Liberation’ Wrapper Lets Japanese Women Eat Burgers While Looking Demure

A lot of people I know tend to avoid eating two things in public: chicken and burgers. Chicken, because it’s harder to eat without using your hands (and the smell lingers on your fingers when you do) and burgers, because you can look quite unsightly when you open wide to take a bite.

For the former, there’s finger tongs (or trongs). For the latter, there’s the Liberation wrapper to hide you behind a demure facade while you stuff your face.

The burger wrapper was debuted by Japanese burger chain Freshness Burger. Printed on the outside side of the wrapper is a half-face of a smiling woman, which is meant to cover the diner’s actual half-face while she eats.

The wrapper essentially masks the person’s face from the front view, although I don’t think anything can be done for the side view at this point. After switching their wrappers to this, Freshness Burger reported a 213% increase among women who ordered their burgers.

I wonder if they’ll make a male version of the Liberation Wrapper for the men who do care about how they look when they eat.

Why This Magical Lake Changes Color With the Weather

Japanese photographer Kent Shiraishi is the author of a photograph that’s now known to millions as the background wallpaper to OSX Mountain Lion—the counterpart to Windows XP’s rolling green grass fields. But while most of us know Shiraishi’s photo, not as many know the fascinating story behind it.

One Man's Quest To Prove How Far Laser Pointers Reach

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who did this, but the first thing I did when I got my first laser pointer was go outside and point it at the moon. I’d stare and wonder if someone was up there, would they be able to see the little red light shining from the Earth?
