Phones Go Back To The Future

LG G2 rear controls I’m no fan of LG’s rear smartphone control keys — but turns out the company had its finger on the pulse of looming hardware disruption when it ushered in those backside smartphone controls last summer, with the G2. The back of the smartphone is becoming a space to watch. Read More

Sailfish OS For Nexus 4 Released

Sailfish OS For Nexus 4 Released

Jolla’s phone isn’t exactly easy to come by, so you probably might be having a hard time getting your hands on one to try out the Sailfish OS. Fret not, the folks at Jolla have now released Sailfish OS for Nexus 4. The official OS image is now available for download, the only caveat is that its compatible with the Nexus 4. It doesn’t support the Nexus 5 or any other Android device at this point in time, so you’ll need a Nexus 4 to try Sailfish OS.

Sailfish OS 1.0 Announced, Will Begin Global Distribution Soon

Sailfish OS 1.0 Announced, Will Begin Global Distribution SoonBack in 2013, Jolla announced their first smartphone that would run the Sailfish OS. With so many smartphone platforms in the market today, going head to head with the likes of Android and iOS does seem like a daunting task, which is why Jolla’s strategy is to try and work their way into existing Android devices, and sure enough it looks like that will be happening very soon. The company has recently announced that version 1.0 of the Sailfish OS is now ready for global distribution and while Sailfish OS has its own hardware, it will also be compatible with a handful of Android devices, thus allowing Android users to give the operating system to try without having to buy a new handset.

Sailfish OS 1.0 is expected to be released in March and will be compatible with older devices, such as devices belonging to the Samsung Galaxy series, the Google Nexus lineup, and the Sony Xperia series, although they did not mention any devices specifically, but hopefully we will find those out at a later date. Apart from releasing the software itself for Android devices, Jolla will also be releasing a lookalike in the form of an Android launcher, giving Android users a small visual taste of what Sailfish would look like on their phones prior to them committing to install the operating system itself.

Sailfish Mobile OS Might Arrive On Older Samsung Devices Soon

Sailfish Mobile OS Might Arrive On Older Samsung Devices SoonHmmm, Jolla’s Sailfish OS and Samsung in the same sentence? It does not quite add up, but that might very well be the reality if what an engineer from Jolla tweeted earlier today (you can see the tweet right after the jump) holds water in due time. Apparently, it was alleged that the SailFish mobile OS will arrive on Samsung devices soon. This is a pleasant surprise but not one that catches anyone with their proverbial pants down, since Jolla did churn out successful ports of the OS in the past for the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 devices which ran on the Android platform. Older Samsung handsets do seem to be the next target for Jolla, so you might want to hold on to those family heirlooms for the moment.

Jolla Beats Out iPhone 5s At One Finnish Retailer

Jolla Beats Out iPhone 5s At One Finnish RetailerBack in May of 2013, Finnish company Jolla announced their first smartphone running the Sailfish operating system. Since we’ve never tried it out for ourselves, we can’t speak to its quality, functionality, ease of use, and features, but over in Finland, it would seem as though the handset has been well-received, at least by some. The device has recently gone up for sale back in December of 2013 and according to the figures released by major Finnish retailers, it looks like the Jolla smartphone is doing pretty well. This is based on the figures released by Finnish retailer DNA, who at the moment is the only retailer carrying the device.

Based on their figures, it seems as though Jolla’s offering is sitting at a comfortable number 5 spot in their top 10 best-selling phones for December 2013, which is actually a spot above Apple’s iPhone 5s which came in sixth place! It also looks as though Nokia’s Lumia 520 is still dominating as it came the retailer’s fourth most popular phone for that month. We’re not sure if Jolla will be able to continue maintaining its popularity or if it was popular simply because customers wanted to try something new, so we guess we will just have to wait and see what the numbers tell us in the upcoming months to get a better idea.

Jolla Smartphone Arrives In Europe Now For €399

Jolla Smartphone Arrives In Europe Now For €399 Jolla’s smartphone which was first announced in May earlier this year, began to hit the markets at the end of last month, where it is accompanied by a €399 price tag alongside shipping expenses that amount to €15 a pop. Apparently, the initial stock of Jolla smartphones sold out in a jiffy over in Finland (although it would most probably be unable to rival the Xiaomi Mi3’s selling rate over in China), and we are glad to say that the Jolla online store is now live, and has made sure that the smartphone itself is in stock for those who live in EU countries, Norway, and Switzerland included.

For those who happen to live in different regions, fret not – the Jolla smartphone is tipped to roll out in additional regions next year to boot. Jolla has so far gotten off on a pretty decent footing with its Sailfish OS, considering how the current mobile market is dominated by Apple’s iOS as well as Google’s Android. After all, Jolla knows a thing or two about smartphones, having been founded by ex-Nokia employees who were not too pleased with Nokia working on Windows Phone some time back. If you happen to live in an area that supports Jolla, would you pick it up? [Press Release (PDF Link)]

Jolla Wants To Bring Sailfish OS Onto Android Devices

Jolla Wants To Bring Sailfish OS Onto Android DevicesEarlier this year, former Nokia employees unveiled Jolla, a smartphone effort that would run the Sailfish OS platform. The handset has since been released and we heard it was going for around €399. While Sailfish might be an interesting operating system, and for all we know it could be a great one, it’s hard to deny the facts, which is that Android and iOS are currently dominating and trying to usurp them would be a long and not necessarily successful task, so what’s a better way to get Android users to try out Sailfish OS without them having to buy the actual hardware? Release it as a custom Android ROM, of course!

Speaking to Finnish website Talouselämä, Jolla’s CEO, Tomi Pienimäki, revealed that he plans on making the Sailfish OS available to Android devices. He stated that he sees Jolla as both a device business and an OS business, which we guess is similar to what Google is doing through its Nexus devices and Android operating system. As it stands, Sailfish OS is compatible with Android apps and according to Pienimäki, installing Sailfish onto your Android device is “fairly easy”. There’s no word on when Jolla plans on distributing the Sailfish OS, but the good news is that it appears that it will be free, although they do plan to add features such as services and advertising that would allow them to monetize it. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in flashing the Sailfish OS onto your Android smartphone?
