Hands On With Jolla’s First Phone – The “Spearhead Device” For Its MeeGo-Successor Sailfish OS

JollaThe first handset from Finnish smartphone startup Jolla is simply called Jolla. It launched last week, after around two years in the making. TechCrunch got hands-on with the device for a few hours at a London press event, where two co-founders, Marc Dillon and Sami Pienimäki, were also on hand to answer some questions.

Jolla’s self-titled and first smartphone launched in partnership with Finnish carrier DNA this week, with a few hundred handsets finding their way to early pre-orderers. Today, a couple of familiar faces from the company stopped off in London to let us play with the final hardware and get to grips with Jolla’s Sailfish OS, which is based somewhat on Nokia’s old MeeGo platform. If you caught our tour of the Jolla prototype earlier this year then you’ve got a good idea of what the handset looks like. In fact, the only differences we can see aesthetically are slightly smaller bezels above and below the screen, and that the rear camera has moved from right flank to center stage. Internally, the core specs are: A 1.4GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8930), 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage space (expandable), a 4.5-inch, 960×540 (qHD) IPS LCD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel shooter on the front. We only had a few hours to probe Jolla’s first device, but head past the break for our initial impressions.%Gallery-slideshow124244%

Jolla Sells For €399

In May this year, we brought you word that the good people over at Jolla have announced their Sailfish OS powered smartphone, and the first shipments of this particular smartphone is said to kick off sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. It is nice to know then, that Jolla has already started to sell this smartphone of theirs at the earlier agreed price of €399 At that price point, you will find that the Jolla smartphone will arrive equipped with a 4.5″ qHD IPS display, running on a Snapdragon 400 chipset with a dual-core 1.4GHz Krait processor, an Adreno 305 graphics chipset and 1GB RAM.

Apart from that, there is an 8-megapixel shooter located right at the back, alongside 16GB of internal memory with a slew of connectivity options. Sailfish OS is said to continue from where the MeeGo OS left off, having being developed by ex Nokia employees. It will place plenty of emphasis on gestures, and is also able to handle Android apps without missing a beat – and thanks to the pre-installed Yandex store, you can already gain access to at least 85,000 Android applications right out of the box. Of course, knowing that Nokia HERE Maps also arrives pre-installed makes it easier to make a purchase decision, no?

First Jolla Phone Releases On November 27th

Back in May, Jolla announced its first ever smartphone which runs on its homegrown Sailfish operating system. The device itself is also called Jolla. Pre-orders were opened up after the announcement and first shipments were said to take place in Q4, 2013. The company announced today that the first Jolla smartphone releases on November 27th, the first batch consists of just 450 smartphones which will be sold through a pop-up shop at Finnish carrier DNA’s store on Narinkkatori, central Helsinki. The pop-up shop will only exist for one single evening, given that it only has 450 units to hand out.

Units from this batch will primarily be sold to those who had already booked a unit through the pre-sales campaign, the company already took partial payment from them at that time. These customers would be invited to visit the pop-up shop, settle the outstanding payment and walk away with their Jolla phone. The company says that it received over 50,000 pre-orders for the device, though it hasn’t revealed an exact number. These customers won’t have to wait for long though if they’re not part of the first batch, the devices will become available at other DNA stores in Finland come early December. CEO Marc Dillon has said that the device will be released in other parts of Europe as well, though it hasn’t been revealed if any other European carrier has been taken onboard as yet.

Jolla Smartphone Gets Its Specifications Announced

Jolla Smartphone Gets Its Specifications AnnouncedWell, well, what do we have here? The new Jolla smartphone has had its hardware specifications revealed to all and sundry over the company’s Facebook page, and not a moment too soon as I am quite sure that many folks have been waiting for some time already. After all, it has been a few months already that the Jolla smartphone was announced officially.

It has been revealed that the Jolla smartphone will come with a 4.5-inch qHD Jolla Estrade display alongside a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. This bit of news would definitely be a cause for disappointment among those who were hoping for something that is slightly higher up the food chain, such as a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution for example. Despite being a 5” device, it feels as though it is smaller than other similar screen sized models in the market. Running on a dual-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, you get 16GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and a user-replaceable 2100 mAh battery.

As for the operating system of choice, it will be powered by Jolla Mobile’s Sailfish OS, sporting a base price of 399 Euros. Jolla has every hope that their smartphone will be able to ship out before the year is over.
