AgIC Is A DIY Kit For Turning A Home Inkjet Printer Into A Circuit-Board Maker

Another startup aiming to simplify the process of prototyping electronics by doing away with the need to wire up breadboards has taken to Kickstarter. This latest one, called AgIC, combines the approaches of two we’ve previously covered — the Ex1 3D printer for PCBs and the Circuit Scribe conductive ink pen — by offering a kit to let people turn a home inkjet printer into a… Read More

CruxEncore Case Turns iPad Air into a Notebook

There are bunches of cases out there for the iPad that add a physical keyboard to make it more efficient to use when typing a lot. A new case has turned up on Kickstarter that turns the iPad Air into a laptop.

The CruxEncore case is designed to leave the camera and all controls of the tablet open and accessible. The case also leaves the speakers uncovered so the sound for videos and movies isn’t blocked. It’s got a durable hinge mechanism which allows you to adjust the iPad Air to any angle, without worrying about the display flopping over on itself.

It’s made from sturdy aircraft grade 6063 aluminum and polycarbonate. The aluminum is then anodized in multiple colors including silver, black, and white.

Power for the Bluetooth 4.0 keyboard comes from a 360 mAh battery that is good for a month of use per charge. The keys are raised and are claimed to mimic the typing feel on a MacBook. A pledge of $89(USD) or more will get you one of the cases with shipping estimated in May 2014.

Every Outlet Cover Should Be an LED Nightlight By Default

Every Outlet Cover Should Be an LED Nightlight By Default

It’s ok to sacrifice an outlet to a nightlight in a child’s room to scare away monsters, but elsewhere in your home they’re far more valuable for other electronics and appliances. And that’s exactly why these replacement outlet covers with built-in LED nightlights are so clever—and should eventually be standard in every home.

The Miracle Machine Will Turn Water Into Wine, Sort Of

The Miracle Machine Will Turn Water Into Wine, Sort OfWouldn’t it be cool if you had the ability to turn water into wine? Well, “cool” would be an understatement but it is an interesting thought. Well now you will be able to do so, although it will probably take you a couple of days to do so, and will require a little helping hand from technology instead of faith.

Dubbed The Miracle Machine, this is an invention thought up by a couple of wine lovers, Kevin Boyer who is a nationally recognized sommelier, and Philip James, the founding CEO of the Lot18 wine club. (more…)

Ember iPhone Case Will Help Improve Your Phone’s Flash

Ember iPhone Case Will Help Improve Your Phones FlashFlash units on our smartphones aren’t usually the best solution when it comes to lighting up subjects in low-lighting conditions, but sometimes that’s all we have to work with. Why is this? For the most part flash units on smartphones results in photos that are very harshly lit, which for the most part is very unflattering.

So wouldn’t it be a good idea if we had a better form of flash for our phones? We’ve come across several solutions in the past, so here’s another to add to the list in the form of Ember. As you can see in the image above, Ember on the surface looks like your typical iPhone case, albeit a rather bulky one, but positioned on its back is an array of 56 LEDs that will help illuminate your subject. I Would Have Killed to Have This Open-Source Laser Tag Game as a Kid

Even when it’s just team deathmatch in a dark, smelly room inside the local roller rink, laser tag is awesome. So imagine how cool it would be if you could liberate it, and play an open-source version wherever you want with game-types you made up. It’d be like a video game in real life! Or paintball without the pain!

Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar Hits Kickstarter Goal in Just 14 Hours

The independent fan film Star Trek: Prelude Axanar launched on Kickstarter this past Saturday to raise funds. The goal was a modest $10,000(USD) and it was a 30-day fundraiser, so they figured the goal would be hit, but they didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.

The goal was reached in just 14 hours, so I think it is safe to say that Star Trek fans really really want this. Now the $15,000(USD) and $20,000(USD) stretch goals have also been met within the first two days, and it’s still going strong.

Axanar refers to the planet at the border of Federation and Klingon space where the Battle of Axanar (mentioned in TOS) took place. Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who was Captain Kirk’s hero, is captain of the USS Ares and is the central figure for Prelude and an upcoming feature film to be created by the same team (to be funded by its own Kickstarter project.)

Prelude to Axanar will be a short historical look at the events leading up to the battle, and it will be the central event of the film Axanar, which will film later this year. Prelude to Axanar will show how Starfleet built its fleet, how they held off a Klingon fleet that had been conquering star systems for centuries and how did Garth of Izar came to be regarded as the greatest Starfleet Captain.

This is proof that people want a new Star Trek. Badly. I can’t wait to see this one myself.

You Know, For Kids: A Quick Look At The 3Doodler 3D-Extrusion Toy

When we first broke the news about the 3Doodler I was pretty excited. It was supposed to bring 3D printing to kids in a way that was easy-to-use and fun. Created by a pair of veteran toy makers, it was bound to be a hit – and it was. The product hit $2.3 million on Kickstarter and was a sleeper hit of the holiday. Now that it’s for sale at retail – and now that I’ve gotten more time to play with… Read More

Android-Powered Instacube Begins Shipping To Customers

Android Powered Instacube Begins Shipping To CustomersBack in 2012, we came across a device known as Instacube. Essentially the device is a glorified digital photo frame which has been described as  “living canvas” and basically pulled photos from a user’s Instagram account to display.

Digital photo frames have been around for a while now and they too can display a series of photos like in a slideshow, but we guess Instacube has the “advantage” of being able to display Instagram photos instead. The good news is that if this is a device you’ve had your eye on, you’ll be pleased to learn that the gadget will finally begin shipping in April, a little more than a year since it was announced.
