In case you haven’t noticed yet, Amazon’s been hitting its Kindle Fire HD 7-inch with sale after sale, and right now, you can pick one up for the lowest price ever in its relatively short history—a cool $160 compared to the usual $200.

It’s about that time for a Kindle Fire upgrade, and it seems Amazon is on it already, which makes sense considering the Nexus 7 received a refresh and the iPad has gone through some major transformations in the past couple of years. Specs of the next-generation Kindle Fire series have been leaked, and they’re a doozy.
According to Boy Genius Report, sources are saying that the next-generation Kindle Fire lineup will come packing with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors clocked at “around” 2GHz, which seems like overkill for the Kindle Fire, seeing as how Amazon wants to keep the price point low, but they may have some intense plans for the tablets.
The tablets are also said to pack in 2GB of RAM, which certainly seems feasible — it’s mainly the Snapdragon 800 that we’re mostly surprised about. The 800 is usually reserved for top-tier, expensive products, and while the Kindle Fire is Amazon’s flagship lineup, we’re curious as to how Amazon will keep the cost down of the tablets, as that is one of their main selling points.
However, seeing as how Qualcomm wants to push its Snapdragon 800 processor to “virtually every global OEM” within the next few months, it could make sense that Amazon would be one of those companies picking up the new chip for their tablets.
Earlier this month, we heard that the new Kindle Fires would be receiving display upgrades as well, with the Kindle Fire HD getting an impressive 1920×1200 resolution while still keeping the screen size at 7 inches. This is the same pixel density as the refreshed Nexus 7 that was released late last week.
However, the current 8.9-inch tablet already sports a 1920×1200 resolution, but it’s said that this version will be bumped up to 2560×1600, which would take on the iPad and the Nexus 10, but with a way better pixel density. We’ve contacted Qualcomm for more information and we’ll update this post accordingly whenever we hear back from them.

It is already widely believed that Amazon is working on three new tablets that it will launch in the near future. One of these tablets is said to be the replacement for Amazon’s entry level Kindle Fire tablet, whereas the other two are said to be replacements for current Kindle Fire HD models. Amazon has apparently dropped the price of its Kindle Fire HD ereader-tablet in what appears to be a response to Barnes & Noble’s NOOK HD cuts, dropping the 7-inch Android-based slate by as much as 15-percent in the US and UK. The price adjustment sees the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD come down to £139 in the UK (saving £20) for the 16GB model, and to $169 (saving $30) in the US, compared to the latest 7-inch NOOK HD at £129/$149 for the 16GB model.
In the US, Amazon lists the Kindle Fire HD change as a “limited time” offer, though it’s worth noting that B&N has used the same nomenclature for its own discounting. Our suspicion is that the cuts will last for roughly as long as the other company’s do, given the fierce competition between the two firms.
Despite Amazon’s changes, the NOOK HD is still the cheaper of the two. For a start, B&N offers an 8GB version, which is $129, and has no direct capacity equivalent in the Kindle Fire HD range. However, B&N’s motivations are very different to Amazon’s as well: the company admitted last month that it planned to clear its stock of existing NOOK HD/HD+ models and then in future license the brand to third-party tablet manufacturers, rather than make its own models.
Instead, B&N would focus solely on developing e-paper based ereaders, such as the SimpleTouch. NOOK sales overall in Q2 – including ereader hardware, software, and accessories – dropped 34-percent, with the company blaming a shortage of high-profile titles as well as waning hardware appeal.
It’s not the first time Amazon has shuffled Kindle pricing to ramp up pressure on B&N. Back in 2009 the retailer cut the second-gen Kindle after its rival launched the NOOK, on the assumption that ongoing content sales would offset any narrowing of hardware margins.
